Stoke build up

Really think this is a Guly game. While not our most gifted he has a great engine, has seemed one level more fired up than many other players in his cameo roles last couple of weeks and has the advantage of being helpful in the air.

Guly really isn't good in the air. He scored a couple of decent headers, but when it comes to challenging for a high ball, he's a bottler. He sort of jumps, but never puts his head in where he might get hurt. He won't be in the XI IMO.

And what if we keep the ball on the ground and not play into their schema of things ? We have players with exceptional ability on the deck; just why we want to go punting the ball diagonally into their box I don't really know. We will keep on doing it until we drop Lambert and replace him with someone with a bit of a brain and some legs.

Lambert is arguably one of our most intelligent footballers on the field. It's the mobility he doesn't have.

Perhaps starting him wide right with Puncheon left may balance the side again and let Ramirez play in the hole. Davies on the bench.

Not sure about KD for this one either.

Downside at the moment is that I'm struggling to find anyone else to come down the pub to watch. REALLY not the game you want to be sitting alone for as I think we will get bullied, but with Shawcross being out that is a huge boost.

Most of our Dubai massive are away for Xmas & NYE (we were down to 4 yesterday boo).

Only 4 we cant have that we will be back soon

Strange post. I was pointing out to Phil that Guly is rubbish in the air in my opinion. I agree that I'd like to see it on the deck more, but saying that Rickie isn't an intelligent footballer is absolute b*llocks.

Just say "think its time to drop

Lambert" not bang on for about a month about his weaknesses and even get those wrong. Rickie has been brilliant for us, but to keep having a go at him is pretty ungrateful IMO. I remember people slagging off le tiss at the end too.

This. Besides, there isn't a striker available to us on the bench I'd swap him for. If he was to get injured now, it'd likely throw our gameplan into chaos. We'd have to integrate someone else into the side, they'd have to get familiar with the players around him and that takes time etc...

He should be our first choice striker, regardless, until the end of the season. Then we can review the situation.

If we hit Lambert with high long balls we'll be playing right into their hands and will get murdered.

We need to get it on the deck, get Gaston on the ball with Lambert, Puncheon and left midfielder (Reeves, Davis) making runs, creating space, and giving him options. Like we did against Newcastle really.

Start moving the ball quickly on the deck, Stoke will find that a lot harder to deal with.

A draw would be a decent result.

It is truly unbelievable that Saints fans are criticizing and looking to drop a goal scorer who many other clubs in the Premier League would love to have in their side. He has 7 goals half way through the season and if he can repeat that form then 14 goals in the Premier League in his first season would be a very decent return. The whole world is obsessed with pace and there have been many great players who lack pace but make up for it with spatial awareness, football intelligence and speed of thought. Lambert has all of these and as such is first name on the team sheet for me every time.

Would be tempted to start big Jos in this one. Think Yoshida will struggle in the air.

no,no,no and no. Yoshida doesn't struggle in the air and Jos isn't premier league standard on what we've seen so far. Yoshida was amongst our best players yesterday.

To be fair, most of those are probably young school children influenced by the fact that he is not the leagues leading scrore but fail to appreciate the workrate over 90 minutes. You won't find many adults subscribing to the view that he should be dropped.

Cameron isnt suspended - yesterday was his 4th yellow.

Although looking on the FA website he might be, bit of confusion some sources say he had 3 and some 4.

Edit: Apparantly a booking he had in the US League has been carried over which is bizarre but good for us if true.

Their defence would then be Shotton, Upson, Huth, Wilkinson

Apparently Cameron is suspended due to an earlier yellow card when playing for Houston in USA.

Stoke fans don't sound so confident without him and Shawcross: "A defence on paper of Shotton Huth Upson Wilko, doesn't look great. Luckily football isn't played on paper"

I don't know how it came across on a computer stream but watching the match live I thought that Rickie worked his socks off and found a number of good positions only to be denied by a poor final ball, the greasy surface didn't help either on a couple of occasions !

Sure it wasn't his best game in a Saints shirt but to slag him off or drop him is nonsense in my humble opinion !

I was sat between a Celtic and a Man U supporter and both thought that (with a bit more support) he could have been the matchwinner !

I looked at the FA disciplinary lists.Shawcross and Cameron were on the 4 card list but obviously the FA hadn't had yesterday's match report by then,so in theory they're both on 5 and out on Saturday

I honestly feel that this is one we can win. Play it on the deck, let them do the running and tire them out. They played some good football last night but look like they can be beaten by a team that really wants to win.Liverpool are not that team.Saints are.

COYS

Yep. We need to do a "Spain" and play without a striker. Although reading some comment on here some think we have been anyway.

Gazza

Clyne Fonte Yoshida Shaw

Puncheon Mayuka Davis Cork JWP SDR

So long as we don't concede a corner, or a throw inside our own half, we'll be fine.

Good news that Shawcross AND Cameron will be missing, 2 key players for them at the back. Didn't expect both to be missing.

If this is a bit like ''after the lord mares show'' for them, we have a chance. Let's hope we catch them off guard, got a funny feeling that we may do.

Why should you not expect them to be suspended. Any player on 4 cards and a sort of "local derby" is a prime candidate for a card and thus a suspension. In my view we don't get enough cards, not that we should actively seek them out but we seem to do too much to avoid them. Don't like that.

Stoke are a decent side this year, defensively they are exceptional and have let in the least goals in the league and are very good at squeezing out 1 goal victories.

Boruc

Clyne

Fonte

Yoshida

Shaw

Cork

Morgan

Mayuka

Ramirez

Puncheon

Lambert

Surely Boruc has had enough time now to drop the extra weight he was carrying when he signed and gained match fitness. He can't possibly do worse than Gazzaniga & Davis.

Also I'd shove Ramirez back where he belongs, in behind the striker with Puncheon switched to the left to take advantage of his stronger left foot and have Mayuka on the right to add some pace.

Boruc would be my shout for this game as well if I'm honest. Someone strong and confident enough to dominate the area, that can't be said about our current 2 of we're honest.

I remember he was brought in against West Ham because of their physical power in and around the box, didn't work out that well though as we were well beaten (but that was the entire team playing a stinker) - but I can see Adkins making that call again.

The way we deal with their thuggish play is by keeping the ball and scoring some goals. We can't allow ourselves to be pushed back: we need to put pressure on the ball high up the field and we need to keep a reasonably high defensive line (our defence is reasonably quick now we have Yoshida so this is not too risky). If we drop back and give their defenders time we just won't cope with the amount of time the ball spends in or around our box. We need to get the ball to Puncheon and Ramirez as much as we can and if they lose it we need to get straight in stoke's face.

Lambert is a dilemma for this one. On the one hand his aerial presence might be handy defensively but on the other I think Rodriguez or even Guly would suit the required gameplan better. On balance I would give him a rest but have him on the bench.

I would also be tempted to give Chaplow a chance on the bench. His ability is generally not PL standard but, as mentioned above, we need to be able to keep pressure on the ball for 90 mins and he could make a great impact in that regard.

I would pick this team:

-----------------------------Boruc----------------------

Clyne--------Fonte------------Yoshida---------Shaw

-------------------Cork---------Schneiderlin----------

Puncheon--------------Ramirez-----------------Guly

------------------------Rodriguez----------------

Sub: Gazza, Hooiveld, S Davis, Lambert, Mayuka, Chaplow, de Ridder

In the post match interview Adkins pointed to rotation, but do we have enough quality on the sidelines to bring in?

Our midfield ran themselves into the ground in the second half, so that'd where you'd want to make changes, but take Puncheon, Morgan and Cork out and we'll look thin. Lambert MUST play too. Ramirez is another who put a shift in.

Forget these cobbled together sides/formations. Stoke should be seen as a top side and to get something out of the game we are going to need to play out of our skins and be set up right. 4-4-2 is a must otherwise Kightly and Etherington will destroy us. I don't want to see Ramirez, Rodriguez or Mayuka being asked to protection Shaw and Clyne.

-----------------------------Davis----------------------

Clyne--------Fonte------------Yoshida---------Shaw

Puncheon---Cork---------Schneiderlin-----Guly

--------------Ramirez-----------------

------------------------Lambert----------------

Sub: Borac, Richardson, Hooiveld, S Davis, Rodriguez, Mayuka, de Ridder

Pretty sure it changed to 7 when the amnesty cut off point was moved to the new year. used to be in Feb.

Might be wrong, but rings a bell.

Anyway 1 match suspensions for 5 cards are an occupational hazard for CMs and CBs. Most of them have already had or are about to serve a suspension of some kind. NA always talks about having players disposed to replace injuries and suspensions.

5 before end December or 7 before February doesn't make much difference, most players with a bit of the much desired "bite" will get one anyway. Should avoid dragging it out because it affects performance.

Stoke play 4-5-1 so we should be going that way as well, same side as Wednesday I expect.

Yep! He is the second highest English goalscorer in the Premier League, equal with Rooney .............. not that bad I would think!

Stoke like to bully you' date=' so game will be like alot of those last season away from SMS.Need to win second ball because they will win lots of first ball. Team above looks ok but[b'] Clyne could be suspect against crosses[/b]

Kelvin Davis is the one who's suspect with crosses, both in the air and on the ground

Was definitely at fault for the Fulham goal

Clyne has made his fair share of mistakes, some of which have led to goals too. It happens.
