St Chalet Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 @officialsaints: Southampton Football Club today announces the appointment of Saints legend Terry Paine MBE as Honorary President #welcomehometerry #saintsfc I think this is a nice move by the club. The player with most appearances, World Cup winner (albeit a squad member) and very big TV personality now in South Africa.
Saint_Donovan Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Great news!! Shows that the club isn't completely ignoring its history and former players.
bpsaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Fair play to the club, a thoroughly deserved honour.
Saint-Armstrong Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Interesting to see Paine, Channon and Moran have all been back at the club and been welcomed and maintained what appear to be good relationships with Cortese. Yet Le Tissier and Benali don't. It's certainly not a case of Cortese totally wanting to ignore the past...
Saint Charlie Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Great news, perfect appointment and good to see the club recognise its rich heritage. I wonder if Duncan had a role to play in this at all? If so, congrats.
VectisSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Delighted for Terry, richly deserved. I am just a touch confused though, I thought John Mortimore was already Hon President. Do we have 2 now, or did John step down at some stage?
derry Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Delighted for Terry, richly deserved. I am just a touch confused though, I thought John Mortimore was already Hon President. Do we have 2 now, or did John step down at some stage? All finished when the club was taken over, one of my mates is a close friend, said he was sad about it as he had been with the club a long time.
derry Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 A good move, I think that both Le Tissier and Benali are not liked because of their history re the takeover and the property issue which is really not related to the history.
farawaysaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Love the man, it's great seeing him on TV and a true club legend. Well done Terry!
dronskisaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 A really appropriate choice, credit to the club. In years to come this mantle may well get passed down to the younger deservees..maybe even Matt....
rooney Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Top award for TP and a worthy appointment for him for all those who had the privilege of seeing him play. John Sydenham and Terry on each wing, wide wingers with pace, getting to the by-line and crossing . Magic. Matt le Tis and Benali came long after TP so I expect their time will come.
ottery st mary Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Well done Uncle Nic:) Well done Saints:D Well done to a Saints Legend.....Terry Paine..Super star:) 3 Points today at Fulham to celebrate:):)
Norm Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Well done, Saints! A well deserved honour for Terry! I'm delighted with this news.
Greenridge Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Good to hear, a nice touch. Goes against the grain for Cortese and his anti-history agenda.......apparently.
itchen Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Hate to be picky but please can we spell the thread title correctly? Makes us look like Pompey Online.
VectisSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 All finished when the club was taken over, one of my mates is a close friend, said he was sad about it as he had been with the club a long time. Thanks, wasn't aware of that. Terry is probably more widely known, so is probably better for the Club, but John was always a great ambassador.
Dellman Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Great acknowledgement of a true Saint both in over 800 appearances record goals for a winger, the one who led us from 3rd division to top division, was in World Cup winning squad with England for whom he once scored a hattrick, and a local boy as well, now our President Well done Terry, well done Cortese!
Miltonroader07 Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Used to watch him from the old Milton Road with the likes of Ron Davies Jimmy Gabriel John McGrath John Sydenham and other legends... Well done SFC
Norm Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Terry is being presented to a bumper crowd before the game V Arsenal on 1st Jan (bu&&er, Bu&&er, Bu&&er and I won't be there). I could only get two tickets rows apart and my grandson won't go if we don't sit together. Oh well, I will just have to see it on MOTD.

It's There Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Brilliant player- saw him in his later years- legend
Under Weststand Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Didn't get to see much of Terry as a player, but he is a true club legend & a very welcome return to the club.
dubai_phil Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Excellent News. Congratulations to Terry. Is a really excellent pundit on TV these days. Excellent Decision by the Club.
WokingSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 This is indeed a great and deserved honour for TP and a good move by the Club. However, (despite an earlier comment) I am still somewhat confused and perturbed. SFC Ltd was never in administration and if John Mortimore was appointed Life President you can not just appoint someone else! (even if the company was taken over). If he wasn't appointed Life President the Club have never made any announcement re his standing down. Also, I do not see how the Club can continually fail to recognise Lawrie Macs huge part in Saints history. (And please do not start on about him taking money from the Club when it was skint - there has never been any real evidence of this!) LMc is still an enthusiastic supporter of the TEAM (at his own expense) and is tremendously active in the Charity World, not least the Disabled Olympic Games. It will be very embarrassing for the Club when he receives a Knighthood, which is highly probable, and Cortese still cold shoulders him.
Thedelldays Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 not bad from te club that disregards its history....or something
Minsk Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 But Cortese as no respect for the club's history and its past players.................

WokingSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 i read a bit of this...still have no idea what so ever you are on about..?It's quite simple really. JM was appointed President. There has never been anything about him being 'stood down'. Anything else you need clarification on?

Dig Dig Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Great news, perfect appointment and good to see the club recognise its rich heritage. I wonder if Duncan had a role to play in this at all? If so, congrats. I'm sure Duncan was working hard behind the scenes to help the club maintain our rich heritage via this appointment of Terry Paine. Well done Duncan.
Ohio Saint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Impressed and nicely surprised. Congrats to Terry!
S-Clarke Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Very nice touch, look forward to see him introduced next week!
manji Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Great move by Cortese. TP is a true Saint. Modest and unasssuming. Its good to see this go to him and not one of the bitter twisted pompous old wind bags or suppossed "legends" who have spent thier time in retirement undermining the club. I would imagine some of the self appointed fans spokesmen will be pretty ****ed as well after not being asked thier advice.
david in sweden Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Anyone in the generation that saw him play, and knows his contribution to the club's history cannot feel anything except real pride. Well done Terry, Good Decision Nicola Cortese:proud:.
corsacar saint Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Well done to NC and the club for this, the man was he best crosser of a ball I have ever seen and for that reason and for his loyalty to the club [ Yes, I know from his book, that Ted Bates refused to sell him, when he wanted to leave ] this is very well deserved.
krissyboy31 Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Seems quite a strange decision to me, seeing TP is based in South Africa and only gets back for one game a season (if that).
Gemmel Posted 26 December, 2012 Posted 26 December, 2012 Chuffed with that , but a thought for John Mortimore. A fantastic guy who I bumped into in Spain when we played Wolves in the FA cup semi final, the year we made the final. He (Like me) had found they only place in the region showing the match and was still Saints mad (As well as bing a lovely bloke).
CB Fry Posted 27 December, 2012 Posted 27 December, 2012 (edited) Seems quite a strange decision to me, seeing TP is based in South Africa and only gets back for one game a season (if that). Precisely why he's got the job. If he lived in Chilworth and had reputation for speaking out he wouldn't have got near it. This is a nice little number by the Loan Arranger. Well played Nicola. Ewell Posted 27 December, 2012 Posted 27 December, 2012 Seems quite a strange decision to me, seeing TP is based in South Africa and only gets back for one game a season (if that). My thoughts exactly although I think other than his location Terry is the perfect man for the job. A modest and true Saints Legend. I would be interested to know what is expected of him with regards his attendance at matches and official club functions, will a 73 year old be expected to fly into Southampton often? I will also be interested to see what happens with his column in the Pink. Good luck to Terry in his new role and a very nice touch asking Ted's family to present the role to him.
St Marco Posted 27 December, 2012 Posted 27 December, 2012 Legend. He could live on mars and he would still be worthy of the title imo.
buctootim Posted 27 December, 2012 Posted 27 December, 2012 Precisely why he's got the job. If he lived in Chilworth and had reputation for speaking out he wouldn't have got near it. This is a nice little number by the Loan Arranger. Well played Nicola. I suspect there some truth in that. Nonetheless a very good appointment.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 27 December, 2012 Posted 27 December, 2012 Great news, perfect appointment and good to see the club recognise its rich heritage. I wonder if Duncan had a role to play in this at all? If so, congrats. Excellent decision, well done NC for recognising a truly great servant who still avidly watches and follows his team.
Sour Mash Posted 27 December, 2012 Posted 27 December, 2012 Anyone know what being Honorary Club President actually involves?
