St Chalet Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 @officialsaints: Southampton Football Club today announces the appointment of Saints legend Terry Paine MBE as Honorary President #welcomehometerry #saintsfc I think this is a nice move by the club. The player with most appearances, World Cup winner (albeit a squad member) and very big TV personality now in South Africa.

Saint-Armstrong Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Interesting to see Paine, Channon and Moran have all been back at the club and been welcomed and maintained what appear to be good relationships with Cortese. Yet Le Tissier and Benali don't. It's certainly not a case of Cortese totally wanting to ignore the past...
Saint Charlie Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Great news, perfect appointment and good to see the club recognise its rich heritage. I wonder if Duncan had a role to play in this at all? If so, congrats.
VectisSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Delighted for Terry, richly deserved. I am just a touch confused though, I thought John Mortimore was already Hon President. Do we have 2 now, or did John step down at some stage?

derry Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 A good move, I think that both Le Tissier and Benali are not liked because of their history re the takeover and the property issue which is really not related to the history.

rooney Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Top award for TP and a worthy appointment for him for all those who had the privilege of seeing him play. John Sydenham and Terry on each wing, wide wingers with pace, getting to the by-line and crossing . Magic. Matt le Tis and Benali came long after TP so I expect their time will come. VectisSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 All finished when the club was taken over, one of my mates is a close friend, said he was sad about it as he had been with the club a long time. Thanks, wasn't aware of that. Terry is probably more widely known, so is probably better for the Club, but John was always a great ambassador. Dellman Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Great acknowledgement of a true Saint both in over 800 appearances record goals for a winger, the one who led us from 3rd division to top division, was in World Cup winning squad with England for whom he once scored a hattrick, and a local boy as well, now our President Well done Terry, well done Cortese! I could only get two tickets rows apart and my grandson won't go if we don't sit together. Oh well, I will just have to see it on MOTD.

WokingSaint Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 This is indeed a great and deserved honour for TP and a good move by the Club. However, (despite an earlier comment) I am still somewhat confused and perturbed. SFC Ltd was never in administration and if John Mortimore was appointed Life President you can not just appoint someone else! (even if the company was taken over). If he wasn't appointed Life President the Club have never made any announcement re his standing down. Also, I do not see how the Club can continually fail to recognise Lawrie Macs huge part in Saints history. (And please do not start on about him taking money from the Club when it was skint - there has never been any real evidence of this!) LMc is still an enthusiastic supporter of the TEAM (at his own expense) and is tremendously active in the Charity World, not least the Disabled Olympic Games. It will be very embarrassing for the Club when he receives a Knighthood, which is highly probable, and Cortese still cold shoulders him.

manji Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Great move by Cortese. TP is a true Saint. Modest and unasssuming. Its good to see this go to him and not one of the bitter twisted pompous old wind bags or suppossed "legends" who have spent thier time in retirement undermining the club. I would imagine some of the self appointed fans spokesmen will be pretty ****ed as well after not being asked thier advice.

corsacar saint Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Well done to NC and the club for this, the man was he best crosser of a ball I have ever seen and for that reason and for his loyalty to the club [ Yes, I know from his book, that Ted Bates refused to sell him, when he wanted to leave ] this is very well deserved. Gemmel Posted 26 December, 2012 Share Posted 26 December, 2012 Chuffed with that , but a thought for John Mortimore. A fantastic guy who I bumped into in Spain when we played Wolves in the FA cup semi final, the year we made the final. He (Like me) had found they only place in the region showing the match and was still Saints mad (As well as bing a lovely bloke).

Precisely why he's got the job. If he lived in Chilworth and had reputation for speaking out he wouldn't have got near it. This is a nice little number by the Loan Arranger. Well played Nicola. Ewell Posted 27 December, 2012 Share Posted 27 December, 2012 Seems quite a strange decision to me, seeing TP is based in South Africa and only gets back for one game a season (if that). My thoughts exactly although I think other than his location Terry is the perfect man for the job. A modest and true Saints Legend. I would be interested to know what is expected of him with regards his attendance at matches and official club functions, will a 73 year old be expected to fly into Southampton often? I will also be interested to see what happens with his column in the Pink. Good luck to Terry in his new role and a very nice touch asking Ted's family to present the role to him.
