tony13579 Posted 24 December, 2012 Share Posted 24 December, 2012 (edited) Southern water do the first 10m for free if its leaking I had mine replaced and as it came up in the middle of the house I brought a pipe from the middle of cold water system to the point nearest the street. It helps if you choose a room with floor boards rather than a solid concrete floor. http://www.southernwater.co.uk/pdf/for-home/your-water/about-your-water/LeadWRCnote.pdf Edited 24 December, 2012 by tony13579

um pahars Posted 24 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 24 December, 2012 Saw that leaking thing and thought "how do you make it leak, when it's under the ground?? Who replaced yours and what was the damage £££££ Their stopcock is right outside my front gate, and mine comes in through footings under floorboards right by front door with 5m of Tarmac in between. So access both ends looks ok and not bothered wrecking old Tarmac drive

The existing might be lead but you can only replace it with Plastic if a reputable plumber does it they cannot leave the lead in has to be changed as it is toxic. Dont let the plumber keep the old lead pipe, either take it to the scrap man yourself or make him deduct scrap value from the bill.
tony13579 Posted 24 December, 2012 Share Posted 24 December, 2012 (edited) I extended the copper in the house (you could use plastic) to an accessable point. Then southern water used a mole to take the pipe under the block paving 20m. My bill was under £200. How do you make lead leak? Make sure you can turn the stopcock off in the street. Expose it below the floor level move it a few times... it will waeken and leak. be 100% sure it is your water feed! not a phone gas or power feed. (when trying to locate my water leak I decided to isolate parts of the house. I cut a pipe to fit a stop valve only to find it was the gas supply ) Edited 24 December, 2012 by tony13579

So are you saying Southern Water did the whole job for you for £200????? If so, I'm up for that. Did it take long for them to sort out????
tony13579 Posted 25 December, 2012 Share Posted 25 December, 2012 It was £200 including the free £10m. I also bought about 10m of copper pipe and fed that down from the upstairs to a point where I wanted them to connect to and fitted a stopcock. I would give them a ring and get a quote as they may need to replace the meter/external stopcock (at their cost)
