Watching BBC 4 last night, there were a couple of programmes celebrating Slade.

I really had forgotten just how good these guys were. It was hit after hit after hit. Maybe it's a longing back to my child hood but I really dont think these guys got the credit they deserve.

Anyone else agree, or I'm a just a tipsy old fart tonight?

The Wiki entry for Merry Xmas Everybody is a cracking tale.

Full of ORLY facts

Like - it was used in 4 different Dr Who Episodes

It's been heard by 42% of the population of the planet

The chorus was recorded in a corridor

The Harmonium was borrowed from John Lennon who was recording Mind Games in the studio next door

The original chorus was Buy Me a Rocking Chair and contained the immortal lyrics So won’t you buy me a rocking chair to watch the world go by and a looking glass to look you in the eye

I saw them in 72/3 at the Guildhall. Supporting acts were Suzi Quattro and Thin Lizzy.

Originally called The 'N'Betweens they later became Ambrose Slade and the lads adopted a skinhead style.

I probably took your ticket as I had a casual "cash-in-hand" evening job there in the 70's.

Very under-rated band. Excellent live act.
