Wade Garrett Posted 22 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Lambert, Shilton, Nicholl, Golac, Armstrong, Keegan (best player in Europe at the time, imagine us signing Messi now), Alan Ball. Really hard to pick one, but I'll go for Shilton. Probably the best keeper in the world at the time, we got decent service from him, and we qualified for Europe every season. I was a keeper myself, so I'm a bit biased.
Turkish Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Depends of your definition of best ever. It's arguable that Kevin Davies is our best ever signing as we got him for £750k and sold him for 10 times that a year later if profit on outlay is your yardstick. derry Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Not the best player but for me probably the most influential. Ricky Lambert, JPT, promotion in successive seasons, and could score the goals to keep us up.

lifeintheslowlane Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Ron Davies. Top scorer in the top division two seasons in a row...he kept us there when we didn't have a defence. Fantastic deal at £55,000 even in those days. Best header of a football I've ever seen...no modern footballer comes near in the air.

Norm Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 (edited) Signing, without doubt, Terry Paine (closely followed by Matt) Signing from another club, without doubt, The Mighty Ron Davies (Closely followed by KK and Shilts) Sadly showing my age. derry Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Signing, without doubt, Terry Paine Signing from another club, without doubt, The Mighty Ron Davies (Closely followed by KK and Shilts) Paine and Davies were a unique pairing. Paine was the best crosser of a ball around, whilst Davies was the best header of a ball I've ever seen.

Crab Lungs Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 For sheer impact in recent times, it's Lambert. The re-signing for Lallana, Schneiderlin etc as well. Defensively, the Jose Fonte signing in League One was another in recent seasons which has helped catapult us forward.
Crab Lungs Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 In not so recent times but certainly in the past 10-15 years, James Beattie was a snip at £1m. Pahars, also.
Saint137 Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Super Rickie Lambert, so much more to come from him, and a talisman for the entire team Shilts close second with KK third if only because he didn't stay long
sadoldgit Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Ron Davies without doubt. Unbelieveable value for money. Probably the best ever "old fashioned" centre forward. Most surprising for me would be Chris Marsden. What a great buy he was.

Turkish Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Jimmy Case was a great signing. A real midfield general in the days when clubs had them, a leader on the pitch and a great influence on and off th pitch to all th young players that came through in the time. In may ways exactly what we need now.
ericofarabia Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Jimmy Case at something like 25,000 was an inspired purchase, Lawries last I think. Despite being in the twilight of his career, he still managed another 5 or 6 seasons, and was key to many of the youngsters coming thhrough in the Chris Nicholl era. Major cock up by Branfart in getting rid of him as his first decision on arriving at The Dell. Never won back the supporters, and lost just about everybody else with his style of play. Obviously knew that Jimbo would not have put up with it quietly. As said above, another wily old head in midfield, Alan Ball was another snip and so instumental in taking the club forward and back into The Top League in his 1st full season. Great minds think alike - we must have been typing at the same time, but didn't post at the same time whilst I mulled over adding Alan Ball in the same msg or start another!! Dalek2003 Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Peter Shilton and kevin keegan. But remember james Beattie had a stormer of a season under WGS that propelled us to one of our most successful Premier seasons.
Thedelldays Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 obviously KK is it for many but a little left field for money spent to value....Niemi was amazing really..absolutely incredible keeper, easily one of the best in the country in his day... Lambert is pretty handy too
Cabrone Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 In terms of impact at the club Ricky has to be right up there for me. He's been one of the biggest driving forces of our ascent from league 1 and his goals may yet be what keeps us in the prem in this first critical season. Other candidates are: -> Ron Davies who scored the goals that kept us in div 1 the first time round. -> Shilts who was a major part of our best ever team in terms of league placing. -> Alan Ball who played 41 out of 42 games in our 77/78 promotion season and was a real driving force behind our success. -> Jimmy Case who was bought for £30k in 1985 and gave us 6 years of top class service. He was Lawrie Mac's last signing and in terms of value arguably his best. There are many other transfers that have been fantastic like Beattie, Niemi, Golac, Armstrong, Dennis etc but the 4 above are arguably the ones that have made the biggest impacts. ...of course the list doesn't include those that came through the ranks like Paine, Channon, Williams and of course MLT. 70's Mike Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 going to discount Terry Paine because imo not really a signing so that leaves Ron Davies, David Armstrong, Alan Ball or Jimmy Case Needs a bit more thought
Lord Duckhunter Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 Heard Lawrie once say it was Peter Osgood, not particulary for his performances, but the signal it sent out. If you're judging it in terms of value for money, I'd go with Mark Wright.

wessex saint Posted 22 December, 2012 Share Posted 22 December, 2012 i was 7 yrs old and living just outside Andover, spending every minute I wasnt at school pretending to be Kevin Keegan, playing for England. My dad then came home from work one day and told me he'd just signed for MY team... Saints!! unbeliveable!! Watched Saints spank Boro 4 -0 at the end of that season before then getting season tickets in the new Family Centre and watching the most exciting Saints team ever for the next few years!
