i'm surprised a thread is not already on here, considering he's not been offered a new contract with the vultures ready to swoop in january. Or could it be that the club have something in the pipeline to offer him in the next few weeks which has yet to be leaked to the press?

Not a lot to say on the matter really. If the club have said he'll be offered a contract on his 18th birthday then we have a lot of indecision until then. Wouldn't be surprised if a few of the bigger boys bid for him in January, but if this is the clubs way of doing things then we've just got to hope that he is going to sign. They must be hugely confident that he's going to sign, or surely they would have got him tied down.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed that his heads not turned by the lure of big money in January

Hopefully he's loving being first choice left back and getting premier league games.

Having said that, we should still be in the market for a LB who can compete with Shaw who is more experienced.

Shaw is a young player, with an adolescent and not fully developed skeletal body.

Some advice for him would be to think very carefully whether he wants to be playing every week in the pressure, high tempo Premier league, or whether he would be better taking a year or two off football to prolong his career at the top level.

If he took a sabatical and then came back to Saints in 2014 I reckon it could give him another 3 or 4 years at the top level later in his career in his late 20's, early 30's (where he would be a better play and at his peak). if Michael Owen had done this he would still be a regular starter for a Champions League team now- although may not have scored that goal vs Argentina. I wonder which he would prefer.

Not getting at anyone. He is young and playing a lot of games in the most demanding physical league there is. He got cramp every match until the last couple.

For his sake might any deal include a sabatical where he trains but doesnt play for say 2 years, which might then prolong his career beyond that?

It doesn't always work out like that, Ryan Giggs and Beckham played from an early age and pretty regularly by man utd but Joe Cole was developed slowly by West Ham to protect him. I would say cole is pretty near the scrap heap at a much younger age than the other 2. I think a lot of factors come into play.

True - it probably doesnt matter for us because in 3 years he won't be here and it will be someone else's problem - but in an ideal world if you were his advisors would you actually want him playing every week this young?

Yes, what is better than regular first team football for his career!?

Playing some first team football as a second choice LB at a top club being paid lots more before becoming a first choice aged 21 or 22?

Look at Owen, Wilshere, Walcott etc - all played loads of games as a very young teenager and all plagued with injury problems.

Every week, yes - 3 times a week no. I would want him developed but cared for, like a little beautiful flower on a hill side.

Sprinters always peek early and get injury problems later on, usually with their knees and hamstrings.

Wiltshire's injury was as much to do with his lifestyle as anything else, he has been a bit of a troubled boy. I think he will develop a lot better than the sprinter types with age.

He would be better doing full time training as normal, but without the pressure of matches which would allow his skeletal body to develop to deal with the rigours of a long career.

Unpopular message but true.

I think your presumption is pretty much wrong - sure you have to ease kids in but you're suggesting not actually playing competitive football for 2 years?

the most ridiculous thing about this entire saga....... is the amount being quoted in the tabloids.

Considering that Walcott and Bale went for £10-12 million each, and the Alex OC deal was worth a potential £15 million (?)....why on Earth would we sell Shaw for a paltry £4 million?.

Pretty tawdry journalism - even if it were true.

My wife's grandfather did four years at the front in WW1, worked in the docks until 70, chainsmoked into his sixties and lived to 90. Not exactly an ideal lifestyle but he was active until the day he died. Must have done something right.

most of that generation didn't have to worry about whether they'd have a job next week or whether the mortgage rate would go up or down.Few did a 150 mile round trip every day either. Life was less stressful, wouldn't think stress kills as many as smoking but it certainly doesn't help.

Thanks Sherlock. Young adults who havent finished growing / developing run the risk of long term injuries if they overtrain. Arsenal basically accused Saints of this after the signed Walcott and he had a bad run of injuries. I'd imagine things are different now we have more money, better sports science and arent battling relegation
