Pointless Early 2013/14 Kit Speculation Thread

As I said last year, it's not just about the shirt, the red shorts and socks are the bit that leave the kit looking foreign. Throw in Black shorts and white socks and it will look a lot better.

So you'd just like us to look like Man Utd instead of Liverpool?

No, as pointed out they wear white shorts/black socks.

Check the kit history, the black shorts have been a mainstay since we went away from blue shorts in 1950 with white socks taking over since the mid 70's.

The point is, there is more to identity then just the shirt.

No doubt, but they aren't going to do that are they?

If it must be more plain, I'm far happier with the all white kit with a bit of red. Stops it being like leeds or spurs so it's still a little unique.

No, they're not are they.

The all white would be nice..... if a little MK Dons....

Have we ever had blue shorts?

Yes, for 59 years in a row from 1891 to 1950.

So if people talk about a "traditional Southampton kit", what about these new black shorts that we started using after the club had already existed for 65 years. Black shorts for Southampton Football Club in 1950 were completely new, a Saints Web Forum in 1950 would have imploded over the change from blue shorts to black!

If Saints wear an all red it for the next 65 years that will over time become the "traditional Southampton kit" and any change in 2078 to the kit will be met with "it isn't our traditional kit".

Same, some people just seem to have accepted we just play in red. I can't stand it either. Southampton play in stripes, I want our stripes back.

That's not what the "stripes" poll said. From memory, 65+% for stripes, and more "I don't minds" than "I want us to play in one colour" around the 13% mark.

You've excelled yourself here, by managing to be outstandingly boring even on this thread, which is approaching Kit Nutjob status and is, at best, a subset of modern football supporting...

...and it's also something you've said about 5 times before. Five times before. Five times. Five. One more than four. ;)

Have we ever had blue shorts?

More navy than "blue", and more due to the limited colour printing processes of the age than any major design choice.

Black tended to be made up from numerous other colours and was a sod for running into other garments. I just made that last bit up, but it was convincing, wasn't it ?

Man Utd have white shorts and black socks.

Except when they have white shorts and white socks which are their preferred European colours.

They regularly change to black alternate shorts with the home kit too.

Occasionally they even twin that with white socks too... logically (and I know you love logic), when they play a team who they don't need to change shirts against, who wear white shorts, and black (or dark) socks. So that would be... ... ummm... well, I know they have done anyway. Maybe at Everton when they were more navy than royal...

100% agree but until we hurt the club in the pocket by not buying it, nothing will change !

I'm already doing that. You get people on here smugly saying "you're only hurting yourself", for some reason.

That mock up is nice IMO, but as Rebel said earlier the sleeves are white (certainly are on the short sleeve) not sure how that will work on the long sleeve?

Rebel said the shirt was "red with white ends to the sleeve" which just suggests white cuffs to me - though as none of the current templates seem to have a "cuff" on the short sleeve shirts, not sure which template we're talking about (again).

As usual, when it comes out it will fit all of the various descriptions except those of the bullsh11tters and we'll all be "oh, riiiight, THAT, yeah everyone said that...".

Would like a reverse of the new Ajax home shirt.

If some geek can mock that up with our badge and a range of sponsors that would be lovely.

As far as I'm aware there hasn't even been a leak of the Ajax home yet - the Portland Timbers away is pretty nice though (see much earlier in the thread).

Just looked again at the adidas confirmation announced on OS. Says '@southamptonfc are all in' and then has the 3 adidas stripes underneath! Just got me hoping that perhaps it may not be all red as suggested many times........fingers crossed.

yeah i wondered bout that, it sounded like it should be a pun but didn't seem to make no sense. Mayber we're being sponsered by party poker or something

And what about the other 90% of the image, the bit that's not the 3 stripes (which we know will be on the shirt) ? If we were having stripes, I'd have expected it to be striped, probably with some predictable guff about "Saints in (3) stripes". The fact they haven't even hinted at stripes is the killer for me.

If adidas hadn't been using the "all in" thing for numerous other non-striped clubs it would be worth considering.

The kits have been chosen. They are just waiting to sign up a new sponsor.

The home kit will be a red shirt with white ends to the sleeves, with red shorts Based on the same design as the Bristol City and Hearts home shirts.

The away kit will be black with a deep v-neck white collar. Based on the same design as the Aberdeen home shirt.

The socks will be hooped.

The badge will be gold or silver.

Why is everyone taking this as gospel?? Source ??

This is what worried me about having adidas.

They just churn out like for like kits from a template

At least with Umbro the kits were unique for the the club, with small details that at least went someway into making you think the price was justified

Like I ve said before, j ve been crying out for adidas/Nike to make our kits, but now it seems to be happening I wish it wasn't !!

Just google image Ajax home shirt. The first one that comes up. That's what I'd like with all the red and white bits reversed. Think it'd result in the perfect Adidas style xerox kit.

So simple to achieve isn't it ? But no doubt we'll end up with some other crap creation.

I have it in my mind that teams wearing back win less games than they should. Stick to white, it makes you look bigger or bright yellow as its easier to spot a team mate.

Didn't seem to bother Man Utd for most of the 90s and 00s... and I'm not sure the effect is significant when 90% of the stadium is the same colour as the home team (except in Cardiff) either - plus anything gained could probably be offset by a study into the effect of teams both wearing different combinations of the same colour anyway (eg Everton in blue white blue against Leicester in white blue white, etc).

Obviously I know what an Ajax shirt looks like generally, and funnily enough theirs is one they must have real problems marketing, because, really what can you do with it ? You can't vary the thickness of the stripes or even add a third colour... they just get the same thing every year with a different collar and occasional different shade of red print or jacquard weave.

Luckily for Saints, it's only one of a few legitimate configurations for us... wish it was one we were using.

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of (possibly pseudo) sports science and research to suggest that red is statistically a better colour to be wearing.

Hang on I'm gonna look it up...

...yep, here you go. The it with a pinch of salt, but it makes an interesting read. Is it any wonder, in a culture of looking for any competitive advantage, some (particularly a chairman of a sports team that does seem to like this sort of thing) would give it go?

Liverpool play in all red. Season in, season out. Not sure they "have trouble marketing" their kits. They sell shedloads. More than we will be doing chequerboard one season, Ajax another, plain red the next, sash, reverse sash, hummel retro, plain red again.

Fans, or if you like, the general public don't really want perpetual change in something as inane as a football shirt. As a kit anorak you might but the rest of humanity doesn't.

I have this bookmarked from last year's thread, and it clearly says in various places that the "wearing red = success" thing is statistically unverifiable.

As it happens I'm in favour of Saints wearing stripes, and preferably the same home kit for 4 or 5 years at a time, whilst changing away kits annually. I was just pointing out that it's easier to shift kits if they change, not that it is what I want from a kit.

As it happens, Liverpool have done quite well at selling "all red, season in season out". Except of course they've had pinstripes, and a big white V neck a couple of times, and massive big white adidas stripes all over their shirts, and ugly bird poo flecks, and the odd round neck, weird shaped stitching panels over the shoulder area, and changed manufacturers five times in the past 30 years which usually spikes sales anyway.

Plus of course Liverpool had a global fanbase even 30 years ago and that's only grown, so it's difficult to know how many shirts they're actually shifting due to design changes, and how many are just from getting their stuff to new fans.

Aye, inconclusive studies all. The essence of my point was that such things are often acted upon by those looking for any advantage, however slight, psychological or suspect the hypothesis may be.

It is true to say however, that the anthropological meanings of red, and the human response to it compared with other colours, has been debated for millennia; with empirical findings suggesting that we do indeed react quicker to red.

So Ajax can't make changes to their collars or stitching panels then?

Love your list of earth shattering changes that Liverpool have made to their kits over the years. Kinda proves my point that they've been in the same kit season in, season out.
