Pointless Early 2013/14 Kit Speculation Thread

Quick update on the club shop situation. Due to circumstance (and knowing I could get in and out in 15 minutes), I went to both the West Quay store and Megastore yesterday. Neither has currently got ANY item of home or away kit on display - in line with the adidas deal beginning on June 1. The West Quay store looks almost empty, there's no Umbro branding or kit pics left either, but no adidas stuff on display yet either. The Megastore is the same, though when I asked about the Umbro kit the guy working there said they "could sell me the home and away shirts" (from out the back) but they were still full price and they were definitely not going to be reduced. The implication was that they weren't able to sell shorts or socks for some reason - maybe they've already got a taker for that stock or they've already stocktaken it, who knows ?

Anyway, nothing worth buying in either store, no reductions, and the only way to get the Umbro shirts if you want them (at the moment) is to pitch up at the ground and ask.

I wish they'd stop using that bloody adidas template with the ball logo in the bottom left, they haven't used that for about 3 years. All the current shirts just have "Climacool" printed on them bottom right as you look at them. Like this (presumably) AC Milan shirt.

What the hell is that in the background behind the stand!!

I knew someone was going to ask that. It's a big ugly "design feature" pedestrian bridge across the River Usk that goes from the Bus Station to the... erm, other side of the river. Pleased to say they built it after I left, cos it's uuuuuuuuuuuuuglaaaaay.

That's the side stand on the river side. Wouldn't want to live in that one single row of terraced houses along the river bank !

Bizarrely as they only started playing at the 100+ year old (rugby) ground last season, despite the fact I lived in Newport for 30 years and have actually played against Newport County, I've never actually been to their current ground for a football match.

The place almost looks nice here. That tall building in the background is the Passport Office, fwiw.

I see they've used the gold badge in the released list story on the OS. There's definitely going to be some gold somewhere on the new kits......

They've so far used it on the Statement by Cortese, the adidas "Saints are all in" announcement and the Released List. Plus the rumour was out there before ANY of those came out.

If I was ATTEMPTING to be TDD I couldn't do as good a job of it as you do trying not to be him.

thing is, people are clearly trying to have a bit of fun. for only you to be the 'fun hoover' and go all MLG on the technicalities of it all. chill man

Fantasy kits generally are pointless, fantasy kits where they're attempting to make it look realistic despite having no basis in reality, and where they still fail due to general ignorance about the thing they're creating, are just irritating.

"Let's use a 3 year old adidas template to see what the Southampton badge would look like on pink and yellow wallpaper". Why ?

He's right though. They're only mock ups. A bit of fun speculating and playing at designer.

No, he's Dulldaysing and saying "it doesn't matter" because he's decided it doesn't matter to him. It matters to me, and I will dump all over it if I so choose.

It's your right to I guess but I always enjoyed these threads and especially your positive contribution to the speculation. I just don't see the point in getting annoyed by enthusiastic amateurs who often design better kits than the club produces even when the technical specs might be a little "off". I would hate this thread to turn into another SWF thread of negativity like most on here these days.

I love the mock ups from the rubbish to the more professional. It's just fun to speculate and play around with designs.

I don't have a problem with the mock ups, which are based on real information for purposes of illustrating something which might actually be a kit in the near future. Can't see why anyone would want to share something that has no reason for existing other than that they enjoyed creating it.

By all means make them, just don't stick them out there as "this might be the new kit" when it clearly isn't. For me, the time for sharing that kind of stuff is when we have no information and anything could be possible (eg 6 months ago). When there's a pretty good chance it's a certain type of design, base it around those.

This particular point spun out of the use of a template we definitely won't be using, which is vaguely relevant to the point.

As much as I love adidas

I can`t stand their footy shirts

The Umbro shirts were well made and fit so much better

I feel the opposite. I have the Umbro sash kit anddon't think its as nice as 3 adidas tops I have. I only wear them all for 5 a side (not at the same time, clearly) but having been through that and regular washing & tumble drying, a couple of the adidas ones are 3 or 4 years old now and almost as good as new. To be fair the Umbro is still decent, but I prefer the fit of the adidas tops.

Hear, hear.

I didn't think the Umbro shirts were too bad up until this season really, the home/away shirt quality for this season just gone nose-dived in my opinion and we ended up with Conference quality shirts.

Haven't bought an Adidas footie shirt in a while (think the last one I bought was a Japan home shirt in 2007) but the quality was decent back then and speaking to a few Swansea supporting mates of mine they say the quality is high.

I didn't think this season's Umbro shirt was particularly cheap - it looks cheaper because of the need to screen print the red on the white body of the shirt to allow the white/grey pinstripes but I've had no more problems than usual regarding the logo, the stitching, pulls on the material or the durability. They are decidedly worse quality than the last 4 England home shirts I've bought though, and agreed that the last striped shirt was a nicer material all over the shirt, and the sash was nice - though with the cotton-soft stuff they used on the last 3 England home shirts even the sash paled in comparison quality wise.

I absolutely LOVE the last Umbro England shirt, the main body is soft and comfortable material and the sleeves are a lycra-type material which breathe and grip nicely without the whole shirt being skintight, it's excellent design.

The adidas Team GB shirts I have are at LEAST as cheaply done as the 2012/13 red shirt, and are also screen printed on white which really does lower the quality effect.

Of course if this years is red without pinstripes it might be better quality material which is actually red, not white printed red.

As far as longevity goes, I have a LOT of old shirts and I've never had any problems with any of them other than sponsors fading, God knows what you lot are doing in them. :D

Man who has way too many football shirts probably only wears and washes each one a relatively few number of times.

Man who buys one shirt a season probably wears and washes his pride and joy many times.

My money is on man with many shirt's shirt being in better nick after a few months than shirt of one shirt man.

Agreed, I was hoping no-one would mention this. :) Thanks to our ridiculous white kit and me going to a lot of aways, I reckon I've worn the Saints home shirt at least 30 times this season, including a couple of 5-a-sides. So about once every 10 days then. Ooh, value, about a quid a wear and it's already in a box somewhere...

My New England Revolution shirt from 1994(ish) is starting to look a bit worse for wear though. If I hadn't sold my entire collection in 1998 I'd have a few others to judge against...

In my recent experience I wear a shirt to death in a season and then add it to the collection alongside it's pristine duplicate. I hope the Adidas ones are a lot more durable, the Umbro shirts just didn't last.

Fair enough.

Maybe saying this season's shirt quality was 'conference level' was a bit of an exaggeration I agree. Maybe it's just a combination of wearing it more than usual this season due to the under-use of the white away shirt and the occasional use of the yellow 2011/12 shirt or just that the printed-on treatment means it has worn out quicker than usual.

I think shirt quality is largely subjective anyway. I thought the last Umbro England home shirt was pretty average quality myself whereas I think the new England Nike away shirt I bought recently is really good quality...but then they'll be someone out there that'll think it's a terrible quality shirt. 'one mans junk is another mans treasure' as the saying goes.

However good the quality is on the new shirt, I just hope it's not printed this year and Adidas decide to use a material that is actually red.

Mine get slung in a box after a year of bi-weekly appearances. I'm thinking of doing some weird photo thing on FB next year to see how many days' worth I can get out of wearing a different one every day. I reckon I must have at least 100 of the things, I've catalogued 53 Saints shirts alone (just checked the spreadsheet I created when I sold some stuff last year, dunno if I actually updated it though). :o

I don't know much about the techniques, but that will probably depend on whether there's any white on the main body of the shirt, if it's pin-stripeless then it could be like the Warrior Liverpool shirt from last season, but you can't print bits of white on red with any success on a large scale, so unless they were stitched in pieces (which seems unlikely) it would be printed on like the 12/13 season's - you might notice the all red sleeves are actually red material.

Which ones did you sell? I am currently trying to grow my collection, I have about 35 or so Saints shirts currently, 70+ shirts from various clubs all in.

I also have a spreadsheet.....

Let me think... last year I only sold my duplicates, you bought one, remember !? I am now down to only one of each (sometimes I have SS and LS though, or numbered and blank where I've played in it for the IFC team).

In '98 however, for the sake of randomness, I sold...

Every Newport AFC shirt I owned, so that's home and away from 1990-1997. Blue/Red Nike PSG shirt with loads of ads on the front (below, but with a Commodore ad instead of Amiga). Liverpool Candy adidas home shirt from 1991/2, similar styled Marseille Panasonic sponsored in white, hideous tartan Umbro Scotland shirt, Wales Umbro home from 91 with the dragon pattern on the front and the follow-up red with green pinstripes, a hideous purple with white sleeves Stoke shirt sponsored by Carling (£5 from 1990s JJB Sports) and the same season's asics home shirt, a 1994 Newcastle home shirt (the asics classic with the blue star), Arsenal's 1993-ish first Nike home and away shirts (with the zig zag motif), a 1996 Reebok white Russia shirt which I acquired for free due to my former sports retail employer's terribly inefficient policy on selling stock to staff, the Saints Pony tick home and away shirts, a light blue asics Hearts shirt sponsored by Strongbow, along with the same season home shirt, and I think I kept the home and away Brazil shirts from the 1998 World Cup (as I'd only just bought them, including the 9 Ronaldo home shirt which was the first time I'd ever seen a replica pre-printed with one player's name and number). I got about £10 a shirt for them, and made myself about £130 at a car boot.

Disappointingly by then I'd already lost or grown out of my fluorescent yellow pin-hooped Le Coq Sportif Chelsea away circa 1984, the Le Coq Everton shirt with the same V neck/round neck as the Chelsea away (the one before the big yoke of 1986), my 1982 Newport County Patrick South Wales Argus shirt (same style as the Rank Xerox Saints), a skintight Milan shirt MADE OF WOOL my dad brought back in about 1982 which had a huge fotorex U-BIX advert panel on the front but which was nevertheless the best fake I've ever had, my 1979 Nottingham Forest red with white 3 stripes adidas classic, my 1981 Spurs Le Coq, my NY Cosmos navy with white rubberised holy gridiron style sleeves, and my MELCHESTER ROVERS SHIRT, of which there is significant evidence of me wearing in photos.

Oh, and bluuuuurgh, shiny polyester with shiny purple shorts and purple socks with white turnovers :
