Pointless Early 2013/14 Kit Speculation Thread

That's basically Sunderland's shirt from this year with our badge on it.

That's the problem with stripes. Somehow we've got to make them look unique/different from the likes of Stoke, Sunderland

Why?

Why do we have to do that? We're a team that play in red and white stripes. I don't see why it has to somehow then be unique.

Like them except for the name on the back

They were done as mock ups for our championship season, we used something nearly identical to the home mock up that season.

Im a massive fan of the blue but it seems more likely we'l end up with a more modern looking black kit.

Spot on, no need to try and be clever.

Just pick a red and white striped shirt and but a Saints badge on it. Sorted.

Southampton are not famous for stripes. Keegan, Cotterill, Hummel (Denmark kit), Sash era. All none stripes. As Saints fans you are kidding yourself if you think Saints are famous for stripes!

Ask any non-Saints fan what kit we usually wear and they'll say red and white stripes.

You're the one kidding yourself if you think other fans think of us more in the Rank Xerox or Hummel kit, or sash kit that was worn for one year when we were hidden in the obscurity of the third division.

They won't. I'm not from Southampton Ask 5 neutrals which teams are famous for stripes and they won't mention Saints. They mention WBA and Stoke before Saints...bizarrely

I don't know what questions or idiots you're asking but I've never met a football fan from around the UK who doesn't know we play in red and white stripes. Even the BBC had a feature at the start of this season expressing surprise that we were playing in a Liverpool 1980s design.

Seems we are not solely red and white stripes now. Nor have we been in the past

Yes, well pointed out. It would seem we are not red and white stripes this season. And other seasons haven't been either. Very astute and quite correct.

Cotterill? What's he got to do with our kit?

There are barely any stripes on the home shirt this season but it has grown on people, me included as I hated it when it was released.

The black/silver would tie in with the logo they have been using on the official site for a while.

I still hate this season's shirt and it hasn't grown on me at all.

And how would the black/silver (which they've been using for corporate branding all THIS season) tie in with the white/gold they used for the Official Statement at the end of last week ?

As a non-Sotonian, I assure you you are talking nonsense. Also, The Keegan era kit was striped, just one broad white stripe and a couple of narrower ones at the side. "Cotterill" (presumably Cockerill?) played mostly in stripes, the Hummel Denmark kit was striped as well as being halved, and the sash was a 100 year old kit for one season. In fact the anniversary sash aside, there's only one Saints kit up to now that wasn't in any way red/white striped, and that was the plain red Patrick kit circa 1986.

EVERYONE knows Saints wear stripes.

Whether they mention Saints first or not has no relevance to whether they think Saints play in stripes though. That's basically "name some more well known clubs who wear stripes", we've only had one season in the Prem for 8 years, of course other people will mention other clubs first. That doesn't mean they don't think we play in stripes.

Anyone else notice that the corner flags weren't striped any more today? ... or am I reading too much into it..

I didn't notice, but they certainly were earlier in the season :

Sort of visible in the pic of Puncheon in the gallery, seem to be red near the flagpole and white other than that.

They were red and white halves today. Top half red, bottom white.

Not the ones in the Northam Kingsland Corner according to the pic of Puncheon ? They're red right the way up post-side and white elsewhere, could be halved the other way though ?

Yeah looks like... You can see the white half in that pic. Either way, not striped any more, and I wondered why the change.

I think we've got a few sets, even a footy minutae geek like me doesn't give a toss about corner flags usually though. :)

ignoring the red and white quarters and then halves kits between 1889-1896

Yeah, I'm choosing to ignore the pre-Southampton FC days, and that we wore navy shorts until 1950 (which I actually think looks better, but still wouldn't be Saints to me). ;)

Regards the on-going "Nike or Adidas" debate...

It looked like the T-Shirt worn by Lambert under his match shirt yesterday had an Adidas logo on it. Purely conjecture based on a very quick glimpse.

Just passing on what I thought I saw. The mystery continues....

Cracking picture has to be said, shows a bit of genuine emotion for their teammates sad loss, always nice to be reminded once in a while that footballers arent too different from the rest of us and we seem to have, on the whole, a cracking bunch of people at the club.

Hear, hear.

I thought a few of our players looked off the pace yesterday as though they were a little preoccupied.

As it turns out they clearly had good reason to be. :-(

Don't know any in person, but we do seem to have a really good bunch of lads at our club. Probably in the recruitment criteria.

Or maybe not... ;)
