mightysaints Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Mine are Tortin Verbier and the Swiss Wall Portes Du Soleil. Both a bit hairy, steep and deep but great fun. Also looking to buy some Scott Punishers, are they any good for on and off piste
dubai_phil Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Back in the day Hahnenkamm Kitzbuhel. Timed. When had too many Gluhweins for lunch Back when I had knees that worked No, never been brave again after that I believe it took me about 3.5 minutes. In reality it was probably 15. Joey-deacons-left-nut Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 I snowboard and the only on piste runs I've ever found remotely "tough" are mogul fields as they kill my knees... Apart from that I can pretty much straight line down any slope. Off piste I can handle most things... Not been for 5 years though due to kids... The Kraken Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Having lived and skied in France for the past 3 seasons I'd kind of given up on most black runs there, as they're mostly just a bit steep and mogulled. And I like going fast, moguls just get in the way. Done some really nice off-piste, north face of Bellecote at La Plagne probably the favourite. On piste, probably Harakiri in Mayrhofen, which is supposedly Eurpoe's steepest pisted run (pretty short though, and tons of d*ckheads who get sucked in by the "steepest" title getting in the way and having a yard sale left right and centre). Also looking to buy some Scott Punishers, are they any good for on and off piste A guy I shared a flat with in the 2011 season bought a pair of Punishers and absolutely loves them. I think (from memory) they're 86 underfoot so they're pretty good for all-mountain, and as they've got twintips too they're half decent in the park too. Very light, too. I just can't stand the graphics on them, they look like Fisher Price skis.
CB Saint Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Les arcs - comborsier. It is a couple of miles of black moguls and once committed there is only one way off the run, the bottom. May not seem too challenging to some of you better skiers, however I went down this on day six of my first ever skiing trip. Suffice to say, I used my belly to over come 95% of the moguls. The worst things about that run are a) the lift to access it from the bottom and b) the pre st. espirit lift up to Arc 1950 from the bottom. Both old, rickety small chairs that take forever and a day to get where you're going.
bridge too far Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Silly little red run in St Johann - not because it was difficult but because I fell, my skis didn't release and I buggered my medial and anterior cruciate ligaments. So quite tough - in plaster for 6 weeks.
the stain Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Harlow Ski Slope used to prove quite a challenge in he 1980s.
suewhistle Posted 19 December, 2012 Share Posted 19 December, 2012 I've skied many of those runs, but never very elegantly, and as I'm no longer young these days I'd ski them a bit slower. Tortin was fun but Mt Fort was er... more of a strain on the heart, The Wall at Avoriaz I did quite early on in my skiing holidays and wasn't too bad. I've also done a few steep mogul runs doing the impression of a lump of slithery liver sliding downhill but names don't come to mind. I've come to the conclusion that it's not so much the run as the conditions, and if you're having a bad day even worse... So piste no 3 at La Thuile (the Franco Berthod downhill) is fine in decent conditions, tremendous fun in fresh powder before they prep it but lethal with ice. I take all talk of straight-lining with a pinch of salt... I skied the Hahnenkamm after the World Cup downhill: they'd closed the Mausefalle due to lack of snow, and the rest was race-prepared ice but my skis weren't. I got off it to the side as soon as I could. After watching Tomba do the slalom I had a go on that run too (without the gates), and it gave me a new appreciation of their technique and the sharpness of their edges. As for ski injuries: surely that's another thread?:-) I managed to hit a slightly disguised line of snow/ice lumps as I came from the off-piste, and although I was well-balanced and going straight both skis released almost at once and I came down on a lump of ice on my thigh and (I presume, judging by the bruises on my hip) my pole. Landing so heavily and without time to adjust I was really shaken up and almost fainted as I made my way home. Fortunately our football game was called off at the week-end as I was due to play in goal, and the bruising and swelling was impressive, and still is! mightysaints Posted 19 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 19 December, 2012 Having busted my right knee doing both ligaments i can appritiate the pain you must have gone through. That's the one I think. Is it the one with the hut at the top and the compression at the bottom? Anyway the World Cup downhill course in Kitzbuhel was the toughest I've ever done, although on my snowboard I guess its easier than on skis. I remember a jump (that I went VERY carefully up to) But as for the rest? It was way back in the early 80's and we only volunteered due to Gluhwein Edited 20 December, 2012 by dubai_phil
