It's been discussed here many times before that although the name is from Christianity, celebration at this time of year goes back way beyond that and most cultures have a midwinter festival, regardless of religion, it just seems a natural human thing to do to celebrate being halfway through the toughest time of year. It's also natural to have a celebration of family at some point of the year.

Christianity chose to put their festival up at that time because it was already such a time of celebration, rather than the other way around, so there is nothing strange about non-Christians celebrating at Christmas, it's always been the case.

What I was wondering about is how much religion actually finds its way into your Christmas and how much has no connection at all. I know some parts of the festival have pagan roots, but those are irrelevant to their inclusion for most of us and are more included because they are cosy or traditional. Is your Christmas Christian?

For me

Non-Christian:

Tree, decorations, giving of gifts, images of santa, snowmen/flakes, rich food, gathering of family, non-religious Christmas songs, pantomime, stockings, joining hands to sing around the tree, candles, advent calendars with gifts in, lights

Religious:

A few carols on the Christmas CD, hearing the kids mention they've learned about baby Jesus, the name

I`m reminded of Bart Simpson`s contention that this is the time of year to celebrate the true meaning of Santa`s birthday.

Strikes me we`ve by and large exchanged one form of `religion` for another.

Exactly. The christians hi-jacked it off the Pagans, as a form of control. Consumerism/Capitalism has hijacked it off the christians, in an effect to control our spending (i.e. make us spend).

Absolute zero, less than that if it's possible. It's the minus 273° C of religion in our house. All scientists and engineers around here, no place for unsubstantiated dogma.

For me Christmas is mostly about celebrating the birth of the greatest man who ever lived, the saviour of the world, Jesus Christ.

Oh, and for many years I was an engineer.

Everyone to there own, personally I dont believe in all of that nonsense, it has been repeatedly defunked and the age old arguement that it still COULD be true is utter tosh, on the basis you could believe that a giant pair of testicles orbit the eart and just because we cant prove they ARENT there doesnt mean they are not.

I love a bit of crimbo though, everyone in high spirits etc

I like doing the christmas carols! These is my favourites:

1) Cum On Your Faithful - I like the bit where it is all soft oh cum on your faithful, oh cum on your faithful and then I get to do a right loud shouting OH CUM ON ALL YOUR F*CKING FAITHFUL YOU CVNT!!

2) The 12 days of Christmas - I like to do alternative lyrics so it is like my true love give to me 7 dirty blow jobs, 6 anal fisting, 5 STD's etc.

3) O holy night - I like the bit where it goes "Fall on your knees and hear the something something" I always find that bit genuinely moving!

None.

Although I did go to mass once, but that was only because it had just gone midnight and I was steaming drunk on the way back from the pub , it was very cold and it looked really nice and warm inside the church thing.

Apologies to all those who were at the Church just up the road from The Monks Brook in Chandlers Ford circa 1990 for disturbing them.

that's not very christian attitude tokyos!

I am more a crusading Christian than a forgiving one. If you are not with me, you are against me and if you are against me, I will kill you. That kind of stuff.

religion plays no part of my xmas but i like some of the carols silent night etc and its a good story about jesus birth film but not has good as christmas carol by charles dickens.

love it because you see family and friends and the kids faces when they get their presents and christmas dinner drinks and partys.

You usually hear about at this time of year that the pc brigade have stolen Christmas from us and we have to start calling it the Winter Festival or something, in case someone gets offended. Thing is, I think I'd rather have a winter festival than all this Christmas business. As something to celebrate it's a complete non-starter for me. It seems a little arbitrary celebrating the shortest day of the year, but less so than the birth of baby Jesus for me.

As a school child, I went to a 'Christingle' at St Bonniface in Chandlers Ford, never heard of such a thing since. Did I join a cult?

Is that the one with the oranges?

Posted

We had cocktail sticks with saltana in oranges, I remember that much. A goat may or may not have been sacrificed. I can't remember as I think I was trying to work out what Methodism meant. I had only been to catholic church in Scotland before that. This new church was like an ikea version of the ones I had experienced previously. In Scotland it was taken far more seriously, massive stain glassed windows, smoke and mirrors, chanting, that sort of thing.

Do you have any solid evidence for such claims?

doubt it but they cling to their dogma as they have every right to do. Why my own mother in law spent 70000 euros on her funeral, we didn't go because we don't do religion. Don't expect she minded though.

Baby Jesus existed tho didn't he? That's a fact ain't it? I know there's some debate bout who has dad was tho.

They didn't have Jeremy Kyle back in those days with his lie detectors and DNA tests, that was half the problem.

I found it! It is real.

For a moment I thought is was one of those big church peodo things and we were told to hold an orange to distract us while the priests picked out who they wanted. What a relief, I hate rejection.

Always amazing how passionate some atheists manage to be, about not believing in something. Odd.

I think the route of this is generations after generations of having religion rammed down their throats. If religion wasn't imposed upon people, people wouldn't be such vocal atheists.

I passionately believe in science and the brilliance of humanity. Not much different to passionately believing that humanity has always been created, guided and destroyed by a higher being.

It's not really odd is it. Sane minded people need to speak out in defiance of the irrational, hypocritical bigotry that spouts forth from many vocal religious types. The delusion of god has hindered the progress mankind for many centuries, so it's important that people can put forward an alternative, balanced view to combat religious extremism and consign these cults (let's face it - that's all they are) to the history books so we can move forward.

Does that involve an orange with a candle stuck in it?

Science don't work tho for me either. I mean I get the scientific cause and effect far back as the big bang but ultimately before then you've got to have a something from a nothing. That was Jebus I reckon!

Yeah, because religion despite having no solid evidence hasn't had a huge negative on human history has it...!?

Have you considered it might be a good thing to encourage rational thought, rather than believe in 2,000 year old bronze age myths?
