Best entry smartphone for 12 year old?

Recommended Posts

I got my eldest a Samsung Galaxy Ace when he went up to senior school in the big town 15 miles away, so he would always be in contact.

Just about the worst mistake I've ever made with him. In 15 months I've had to confiscate it 3 times, the last time for over 2 months. Getting him to put it down to come up for air, food, homework, sleep, etc is like asking a seasoned heroin addict to go cold turkey.

When I went to watch The Hobbit yesterday morning, the cinema inserted an interlude because of the length. I smartly stood up when it started, and watched over a hundred little glass screens light up with fingers zipping across them across the auditorium. I reckon 95% of the people in attendance went immediately to their phones. I sat with an old colleague at my company Xmas dinner on Thursday evening, and every time he wasnt being directly addressed, he got his phone out.

Its really quite sad.....

A person with over 22,000 posts on SWF moaning that too many people spend all their time looking at a screen....in a cinema.

I actually agree with your general point though...

This one gets a good review but never heard of the make before... http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/huawei-ascend-g300-review-50007180/

Anyone got one of these?

Cheers

Yup, top phone, very rootable (if you're into that). Will run Ice cream Sandwich if you wanted to upgrade the OS. You can get one from ebay rooted, upgraded and unlocked to any network for £130 (and all the rubbish Vodafone apps gone) or go for the Vodafone PAYG for £100 + £10 top up.

Don't think you'll get a better phone for around £100. Only downside is no forward facing camera for Skype but then look at the price!

Also, would recommend you look at Mobiflock if you want a bit of control over their phone... (or a lot of control - you decide!)

Don't parents worry what children have access to on a smartphone? Don't tell me things like age filters are going to stop kids, as they will get round it. I'll be worried for porn alone. Nevermind a whole raft of other unsuitable stuff.

My only concern is that he will gain easy access to the Saintsweb Forum. I'm not sure his young mind is ready to absorb such levels of wisdom and intellect quite yet.

Nokia Lumia 610, and the 800, are available for that kind of money. Quality bits of kit and a doddle to use.

More apps on anything Android though. Those recommended above are all decent. An Orange San Francisco 2 at £50 would get my vote. Get it unlocked and you've got a great phone for little money.

Thanks for all the recommendations and lectures, sorry....good advice on how to bring up my kids ;)

Ended up going for the Huawei in the end....looks and feels great quality for the price (got it for £89 from Argos)

Cheers and a Merry Christmas to one and all.

Who gave you the right to tell everybody how to live their lives? Next time you don't like something, why don't you just shrug your shoulders are get on with it? Eh? Why don't YOU do that? Take your own advice! And anyway, you're asking who gives a **** whether a 12 year old has a phone, yet YOU opened a thread called "best entry smartphone for a 12 year old". What were you expecting? Why don't you just open threads that you're net rested in? Eh? Rather than dishing out the advice why don't you just get on with your own life rather than reading about 12 year olds and phones?

Nokia 610 a pretty decent phone for a nipper. My 2 are on payg virgin media cutomer addict tarrif , pretty good. Piece of mind that they are contactable overrides any other consideration in my book. They are 14 and 12 and I want them to have phones, its not spoiling them at all.

This, by a mile.
