Fox at Left Mid?

So with the Adam injury theres been lots of discussion on who should deputise for him.

I've seen no mention of Fox. From what Ive seen of him his main strengths are set pieces - crossing, free kicks etc - ideal attributes for a midfielder. He is also a defender so you would hope would track back/cover Shaw?

Fox, Dickson whatever, none of them are going to be playing at left mid for Saints at any time soon. We will merely shuffle the pack, 3 candidates for the job for me, Davis,Guly and JWP.

It wouldn't work and IMO is a terrible idea. We probably have 7 or 8 players I would play there over Fox.

Our wide midfielders interchange and come inside, link with Lambert and score goals.

Fox is a left back who has been dropped.

His only attribute is that he can put a ncie cross over. If he plays LM we are screwed.

He is one of the slowest in the squad and is incapable of taking on a man - hardly what you need to unlock a prem defence.

I would. Used him there as a sub when he first came here and didn't put a foot wrong for a couple of games. Looked a bit lost at first but linked up with Harding well.

He was originally a left midfielder and his crossing ability could be a nice little asset to have on the left wing.

I would love to see some of the line up's we'd put out if it were up to some of you moong beans.

From suggestions that (in seriousness) been put on here this season we could do this:

-------------------------Cropper--------------------------

Clyne----------Cork----------------Fonte--------------Shaw

-------------------------Yoshida----------------------------

Chaplow----------------------------------------------------Fox

-------Mayuka---------Lambert------------Rodriguez--------------

(Yoshida as a defensive sweeper)

Don't forget Forte at CB with Seaborne holding in front of the defence man marking....

To me, the answer to the OP's question is that it relies on the opponent: if we meet a team where we expect to be under a lot of pressure, then Fox may provide good cover for Shaw. It's been done before, e.g. when Valencia put on both Alba and Mathieu to deal with Barca's attacking options:

If we are at home to Reading, then you don't want Fox running (or ruining) the show as LW...

Not sure why this is being debated... we will play the 4-2-3-1 with Rodrigues interchanging with Lambert and Ramirez throughout; only Puncheon will play right as his natural ability to switch inside provides more shooting opportunities for him.

Why bring anyone else int the equation when they are clearly not good enough.

So some people would we rather played a striker there than a naturally left footed player, who can deliver a killer cross. I love this forum:facepalm:

Just to check, you would rather play Fox as a left winger moving inside and interchanging with Lambert, Ramirez and Puncheon than say Guly or Rodriguez?

it will more than likely be gaston left with lambert in the hole with j-rod up front..

Yep I agree. Although the front four are so fluid that they all drift in different directions anyway. As long as every position is covered then it doesn't really matter...in fact the fluidity will hurt teams as it's harder to mark.

Jos is left footed. He gets my vote. I'd also play Nigel in goal as he has bags of experience. Chaplow is bald. He should have no place in our starting line up. Only hairy people should play, look at Marouane Fellaini. The hairier you are, the better. Fox has hair, but is still not very good. Must be a wig.

I suggested it the other day. However after some time discussing it on the Lallana injured thread, I don't really think it would be a good idea. What with the way we play. If it was a straight up 4-4-2 then yes, maybe. However withe interchanging front 4 it just wouldn't work.

Danny Fox is a good footballer with a nice touch, good control and excellent delivery !

What he lacks is pace and defensive positioning !

To be played in front of a more traditional left back makes a lot of sense to me and I have discussed it many times with fellow Saints supporters !

I really don't understand those who write him off as useless, sure he has limitations but he still has a role to play and you never know it could turn out to be a masterstroke !!

Punch to be put left side with J-rod going RM,one thing for sure is you wont be seeing Mayuka starting!! (when does he go to ACON?

-----------------------

Sounds like a great idea ( not) it all went tits up with punch when he was moved to left to accommodate oxslade, he became the whipping boy week in week out and the rest is history. Leave Ramirez there for now.

Itll be one of Mayuka, J Rod, Guly or Chambers who deputises for an injured Lallana.

Fox is a terribke idea IMO, why do we get so many threads on playing players out of positions because they have a FEW attributes that could benefit that area ? This isnt sunday league, at the top level you generally play the position you have been coached in for X amount of years.

It doesnt work

Gaston is wasted out there, for me drop jay rod again play 4231 Have Mayuka Puncheon Gaston Lambo as our attack.

Would love to see fox there and i personally think were see him come on for the last 10-15s there next sat, but i also think Guly will start LM, which is a shame as he is really not good enough to play more then 15-20 mins, yes he came on and done well but we need hard working players vs Sunderland and he wont work all game, and also pace, we need to stop danny rose going forward hes similar to fox great attacking poor defensive positioning.

'You don't understand' Well have a chat with Nigel next time you see him and perhaps he can put you straight on why Fox is nowhere near the team any more. He is nearly blind for a start. He has no all round vision so he just doesn't mark players. He NEVER closes players down to prevent crosses - just stands five yards away and watches the opponents cross it in. He cannot anticipate where the ball might go or where team mates might be...... He cannot stay in position or anywhere near it.

He CAN cross a ball - that's it !

In summary, he is Carp and a liability.........Nothing more to add...

Tadanari Lee could do a job there.

But probabaly not a very good one.

Are you mental? He runs around a lot, played well in the NPC for about 10mins coming off the bench and is an international for a powerhouse of world football. What more could you possibly want?

The enlightened few on here have said he is going to light up the Premier League this year and that's that.

With his non stop running I'd play him alongside Yoshida at CB. He could defend and play LM at the same time. Ok he's a bit small but he does jump quite high and the communication at the back would improve.

Fonte could then be freed up to play in front of the back 4.

I'd play Guly there. He had a good game playing there against West Ham. Ramirez leaves us too open defensively. Having said that Rodriguez hasn't let us down when forced to play on the left. Chaplow is not the worst shout in the world. He gets up and down the line and will keep things tight. Shaw can quite clearly do a lot more offensively if given licence so Chaplow's lack of quality on the ball might be overcome by Shaw stepping up. Interesting choice for Adkins. IMO he'll play Ramirez and we'll concede goals because of it.

Are they the new Marsden and Bridge? They have so much in common.

Rose plays on the left, therefore will be playing against Clyne and Punch probably. I'd play Guly LM personally.
