Chatting with my Nipper on the way back from SMS last Saturday we were discussing Sunderland. Now I know that the Home/Away kit change has been around for a long time BUT, have Saints ever played an opposition team that wore Red and White Vertical Stripes at either the Dell or SMS? The MLT family came very close in his Charity Match but is there any other occasion when it happened?

Just a thought for discussion until we get to play Sunderland who won't be wearing Red and White Stripes, or will they?

Well, I've seen the reserves play the first team at St Mary's before.

Really doubt that it has ever happened at St Mary's. Not sure about the Dell mind.

Not the stripes, but in a slightly inebriated state watching our match in the pub V Liverpool last week I must admit to getting excited once or twice when the team in red were on the attack.

I have to say I hate our Red Home Kit - it just doesn't seem as if I'm watching The Saints.

But surely there is no way Sunderland will be in their home kick because of the red stripes. Pretty sure we have never worn our home kick at Anfield.

Southampton v Ajax is the closest I can find...

Good point. Arsenal won the Markus Liebherr cup wearing this kit...

Which is actually less stripey than Ajax, so pretty pointless from me really....

In the 70s and 80s for some reason it was practice to wear the away kit in the home leg and the home kit in the away leg in European game. So Athletic Bilbao might have worn red and white stripes at the Dell when we played them in the UEFA cup in The early 70s. This is one for Fitzhugh Fella.

I would have been at that game as an ankle biter, but can't for the life of me remember anything about it!! Also can't find any pics, but as mentioned about away kits being worn at home, we did wear away kit 2 tone Kevin Keegan Blue at home to Sporting Lisbon 81 and Hamburg 84. We were in home kit Cup Winners Cup 77 v Anderlecht and Fairs Cup 69 v Rosenberg.

The mystery still remains then.

I can't recall it happening at any match when I've been in attendance (apart from the Forum Matches when one team played in stripes and the other in the away kit but that doesn't count) - that Bilbao UEFA Cup one sounds feasible, plus there are probably a few instances (like Ajax) of us wearing an away kit in friendlies for marketing reasons.

When we had the sash, we played a few teams who wore red at St Mary's (and some still sang "Come on You Reds" like idiots), but no visiting team wore stripes - both Brentford and Exeter wore black IIRC.

I believe Bilbao also played both Liebherr Cup games in black at the start of last season. They did - see below.
