Sour Mash Posted 1 July, 2013 Share Posted 1 July, 2013 A lot of reports here this morning that Norwich are close to signing Hooper for 4.5Million , At that he is a absolute gift. Come on NC get your act together Hooper would be a perfect foil for SRL. A similar bid plus a makewieght player such as De Ridder , Chaplow etc would surely bring hooper to St Marys. It's a good price for Hooper, but I assume you're joking about De Ridder or Chaplow?
Saint Charlie Posted 1 July, 2013 Share Posted 1 July, 2013 We're not looking for a foil for SRL, we're looking for someone better than SRL. IMO, of course. Is the correct answer. Hooper can go to Norwich, Hull or Nottm Forest - I don't think he would add much here.
saintstr1 Posted 1 July, 2013 Share Posted 1 July, 2013 Is the correct answer. Hooper can go to Norwich, Hull or Nottm Forest - I don't think he would add much here. All a matter of opinion, but as someone who has seen Hooper play a lot for Celtic I think he is exactly what Saints need. A proven Goal Poacher well capable of the EPL, which is exactly why Norwich & others want him.

Toon Saint Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 Hopefully so we can draw a line under his name finally ! Agreed. We've scouted this guy (along with Wanyama) a lot. If he was good enough we would have moved on him. He could well score 10-12 goals a season for Norwich but we are obviously looking at someone who will add more to our play than just a goal poacher. Hooper should do well there and Norwich seem to be doing some good business. Do think that people are exaggerating how well they will do next season though. They had a steady defense but were one of the poorest teams in the second half of last season. Not much of a footballing philosophy to build from (despite the success of their youth team) and I think it will take them time to integrate some of their attacking signings. They will improve, definitely. But they are not going to be challenging the top 10.
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 Hopefully so we can draw a line under his name finally ! Obviously not the marquee signing that we are after but I certainly would think he is worth a pop at 4-6m and low wages, honestly reckon he will be a decent player in the prem

Shows how far we've come though when what was possibly an unrealistic target once now turns into a 4-6m "pop" obviously remaining contract length has something to do with his lower fee but you get the gist of what I mean. Wes Tender Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 He seemed to be a decent enough option when we were after him earlier, but somehow I find my self distinctly underwhelmed at the prospect of getting him in now. In light of the sort of strikers with whom we are now being linked, he appears a bit bargain basement all of a sudden.
georgeweahscousin Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 Said it the other thread. No better than what we have. Massive SPL risk factor with strikers too. Of the two I would have picked Jelavic and he has proved to be pants.
buctootim Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 Maybe no better than Lambert, but he is additional to him. We should have four recognised goalscorers imo and at the moment we've got two, the main one of which is 32. Ideally we'd sign a poacher like Hooper for £6m and a more creative forward / striker as well.
Marsdinho Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 I guess if were that serious about signing Hooper, we would set up some sort of swap deal if Celtic came in for Sharp... http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/english/neil-lennon-eyes-up-billy-sharp-for-celtic-1-3001506
Celticman Posted 15 July, 2013 Share Posted 15 July, 2013 If he'd scored 40 goals for Celtic last season perhaps he'd be worth a look, but his record wasn't great given the league and lack of Rangers. Absolutely no way he could replace Lambert. He proved himself against better teams last season in higher pressure situations than teams like Norwich find themsves in. More to his game than just a poacher as well, his link up play is excellent He's going to QPR anyway.

Bucks Saint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 He's going to QPR anyway. QPR are likely to submit a revised bid today or tomorrow which Celtic will accept. Norwich will match it. Hooper will then be free to negotiate terms and he wants to go to Norwich

If he had a lot of pace as well then maybe worth a gamble but to me he fits in the Sharp and Charlie Austin bracket of player.
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 I'd be disappointed to see him at QPR for £6M - it would be worth paying at least that to get him here. He scores lots of goals and would link well with Wanyama. Top level proven striker going to second rate club with third rate manager.

HE ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE PREMIER LEAGUE.....jesus is it hard to get people to understand that. If Hooper was good enough and available at 6 million do you think sides would be falling over themselves to pay 20+ million for Uruguayans and Argentines ? Scotland's top scorer was snapped up by those European Giants at Nimegen for sod all and a 2 year contract. I just hope we haven't been fooled over Wanyama. Crazy Diamond Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 I dare say that our own Billy Sharp would have scored a bagful of goals in the SPL, but it seems we don't need to even play him in the Premier League to know he's not up to it. We are signing better players than Gary Hooper, though I do agree with Window Cleaner - sincerely hope we've not been conned with Wanyama.

We need to move on and accept that the club have a calibre of targets (particulary strikers) and that doesn't include Gary Hooper. Not one prem club a side from Norwich has had much interest in signing Hooper, this should tell you something in addition to the fact that a striker who isn't good enough for the level we want to go seems to be a possible replacement for him at Celtic.
