Crazy Diamond Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 Is it me or are Reading fans just terrible? They didn't make a single noise throughout the game, no wonder their team aren't exactly inspired. Could you be bothered to turn out every week for such an unappreciative audience? Don't know for certain if it's true, but I heard today some were starting trouble, just like last time. As for the team itself, they've been found out. I said last season when we lost to them that they are the very definition of a 'hit and hope' team. They just want to get the ball to Roberts and let whatever happens happen. It didn't work today, and if you ask me, it won't work in this league. Quite rich to hear that we're a one man team that relies solely on Lambert when we played that lot today. Over the summer I heard a lot of their fans saying we'd wasted money on Rodriguez and that Pogrebnyak was a far better buy. Rodriguez gets better with each game, whilst Pogrebnyak is costing them God knows how much a week and where was he today? As far as summer transfers go, they got Gunter, we got Clyne. They got Guthrie, we got Ramirez. I think it's evident who did the better business. Conclusion? Sh*t club, sh*t fans, you can keep your Championship trophy. Their one game plan was to boot it up their right in the hope that they could bully Shaw and Lallana. Shaw did superbly well I thought. There was one point where he allowed the ball to run across his man before picking it up on the other side of him and getting it away and up front. Brilliant. It looked like a Prem team v a Championship team today - skill and flair v endeavour and physicality. That style of football gets you so far, but the Prem will find you out. They could have had an extra 700+ more tickets and a full allocation in the away end, taking them to 3,100+ if they wanted, but didn't. This. We took 4600 to theirs last November and that was the max they gave us. They are a feeble bunch. Have respect for their manager [EDIT - scratch that, just seen his post match comments, FFS, you myopic moron], but not the team. Roberts for example is just not good enough for the prem, like last time for him. Spent half the match whining and trying to conn the Ref into giving him fouls, the other half actually fouling. astrasri Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 Sitting a bit closer than you - there was some noise from them, mainly our songs with name changes. |They don't seem have any original songs of their own, but what do you expect from a club that has to print its own song sheets for fans to follow. The next challenge for Gareth Malone - get Reading fans to sing their hearts out spontaneously, if he needs ideas then pop down to St Mary's and we can show him how it's done! Saint Garrett Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 They were deathly silent. Piped up a bit at the start, but throughout they were awful and a lot were sat down. They're just a nothing club, who have no real history and are extremely poor on the pitch. Like others have said it's boot it to Roberts in the hope he'll be able to make something of it and set Le Fondre free. Shaw did fantastically well today as did Yoshi and Fonte. Clyne didn't have an awful lot to do defensively I thought. Good to see we have found a bit of sterness defensively in the last few weeks, thats only 2 goals conceded in 4 games now. dronskisaint Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 Was in Block 1 today so was as close as anyone and they were very average...chose to turn their back on the Northam and out-sing the Itchen...not too difficult but all they had to offer was a fairly quiet 'Campiones' chant which the (usually quiet) Itchen took exception to with a 'We are Southampton we don't give a fu ck'...shut them up every time. On the pitch Reading worked hard, physical, not a lot of flair...failed miserably to bully Shaw or anybody really. Thought their central defenders were robust, Rodrigues got pushed about a bit but kept coming back for more. Punch scared the shiit out of them and we were really better than them than the scoreline suggests. I agree the last ten minutes were nervous because we're Saints....not because they actually troubled us a great deal - I actually felt pretty confident in our ability to stop them and keep posession and we did that well enough to kill off the final injury time minutes. I know which team I think stands the better chance...give them their due they give everything but so did we...with that added ingredient of genuine class beginning to show through. Saint Garrett Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 Few posts on their match reaction thread.... In fairness, Shaw was ****ing awesome. I'm not sure we have that kind of talent among out 17 year olds. In fact, every single Saints player was far superior technically and physically to their counterpart for Reading. our support was oxf*rd ****. Genuinely disgusted by that. No quality on show from any player at any point in that match. 2500 travelling let down by clueless tactics, clueless players, and clueless substitutions. Too angry to write anything rational, so I'll leave it at this: McDermott out Yeah it was a poor performance. I did the tv equivalent of leaving with 15 minutes to go. First half wasn't so bad but the second really highlighted out lack of quality in midfield. Jay Tabb gave it a good go but generally we were bobbins. Didn't think much of Southampton either tbh but second half we made them look okay, which took some doing.

They looked like a championship team at the same time maybe given the gulf in class we should have pushed on a bit more. 2 or 3 nil would have reflected the real difference. We did score two goals though come to think of it - couldn't see anything wrong with the disallowed goal?? The ref and lino's were league two standard - really very very poor... John Boy Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 Poor fans, poor team, they set their stall out early doors with 10 men behind the ball. Roberts like Holt both big units looking for the foul for the set play rather than actually playing football. Interestingly Ben from Eastenders actually switched Roberts over to the left wing because he was getting rinsed by a 17 year old!! That says a lot that their Talisman was in the pocket of a nipper most of the game. They were scared of us. And sat in the Chapel you get to hear the full force and wit of the Northam (and naughty words) Reading fans were mere Church Mice. ant Posted 8 December, 2012 Share Posted 8 December, 2012 The last 10minutes they were on top and I was glad the half time whistle blew. Erm... Aside from the ref gifting them two ridiculous free kicks outside our box in quick succession, how exactly were they on top during that period? We played some excellent possession football to keep them at bay and then took it into the corner to run down the injury time, again with little to no threat of Reading breaking away. Very professionally seen out - not the standard Saints fare at all!

obelisk Posted 9 December, 2012 Share Posted 9 December, 2012 I live in Reading so feel that I really should stick up for some of their long-standing diehard types. There are a few but, frankly, not many although I tend to find the ones that I chat to pretty fair. Tonight in the pub there was no doubt about the better side today. Something I do find though is that a lot of Reading fans also seem to support some other team, be it Chelsea or Spurs or Liverpool or whatever. Maybe it's something to so with JCLs or perhaps the large number of people living here that hail from elsewhere. It all seems rather bizarre. melmacian_saint Posted 9 December, 2012 Share Posted 9 December, 2012 I was quite surprised at how poor they are as a team. Apart from some neat dribbling here and there by Tabb, and some long free-kick mayhem, there is just nothing about them. Their fullbacks looked poor and they can't move the ball forward unless they hoof it. Jason Roberts got away with murder as far as the referee is concerned to be a threat to our defense and yet failed to even create a chance. In fact I can't understand how they didn't get at least 4 yellow cards. Some tackles out there would've been punished at Sunday league level. We ran the show and just proved that the defeat at the end of last season would never happen twice. As for their fans, singing "Champione" when you're drowning down in the Prem is just pathetic. If anything, their performance just shows how dodgy their bragging rights are. Unbelievable that they were top at the end of last season. It just shows you with how much teams can get away with in the FL. Having heard reports from other matches in their promotion run I believe they were very lucky. Since I believe QPR will improve their form, I expect them to be the bottom club. They really haven't had many injuries and have been playing their best pick every week and this is pretty much what they can produce. Also, McDermott needs to learn how to speak in public. His mumbling in the interviews is quite annoying.
shurlock Posted 9 December, 2012 Share Posted 9 December, 2012 (edited) They had a pretty effective, if predictable gameplan last season and it seems that they havent built on it. Where they had pace last season, they had none yesterday (fair dues to Clyne for nullifying Mcanuff who looked a world beater last week against Rafael, supposedly the best RB in the prem). Where their midfield snuffed us out by chasing and closing everything, the likes of Leigertwood were soft as s**t and where Pearce and Gorkks were totally dominant in the air, Lambert had much more joy against Morisson and Mariappa. ollysaints1 Posted 9 December, 2012 Share Posted 9 December, 2012 i agree that their fans were poor but going back to the origional post, "Could you be bothered to turn out for such an unappreciative audience?" thats abit of a joke statement, those players will earn more in 1 month than most of Readings fans earn in 1 year. It should be a case of whether the Reading fans would pay their money to watch that rather than the players turning up as if they're doing the fans a favour.
