Glasgow_Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 If you had to pick one area what would it be? Not as easy to choose as 6 games back GK: 3 decent keepers at club fighting for no.1 do we need more? DEF: looks more solid but trouble if Shaw, Clyne or Fonte get injured. MID: Good starting 4 with S.Davis good backup for CM spots limited options on right and left ATT: Nigel doesnt seem to rate Mayuka, if Lambert was injured?
Greenridge Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 GK: I'm not sure we can say we have 3 decent keepers DEF: We've got cover at RB and LB but we are exposed at CB other than Seaborne MID: We have plenty of options ATT: We have several options If we can only have one then I'd go with a CB as we are more than likely to suffer injuries and suspensions and this is the one area we have very little cover. In saying that I'd like us to get 3 players in.
Black Sea Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 It's a goalkeeper for me. I want Gazza to do well, and I think he will given time, but we really need a decent dependable keeper that can marshall the defence well. However, those type of players aren't ten aplenty, so I think we'll be hard pushed to get better than we have. Agree about the defence too. Yoshida is getting better but I would still like to see a big commanding centre back in there.
Chez Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 agree with original post about lack of cover at left and right midfield.

NA does not seem to rate Mayuka, Guly has zero goals in last 28 and J Rod has not yet found his feet. Edited 8 December, 2012 by Glasgow_Saint
Junction 9 Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 3 average keepers is what we have. The defence has turned things around in the last six weeks, a solid keeper to add to it would be invaluable.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Author Posted 8 December, 2012 I only want one signing - Brad Freidel Think Spurs have ruled out selling him in Jan
Badger Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 GK and commanding CB are the essentials in my view. Anything else is a bonus.
Chez Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Guly has zero goals in last 28 has he played the last 28 as a striker?
Mr Saints Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Is Friedel, Dawson and Ince asking for too much?
Glasgow_Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Author Posted 8 December, 2012 Must be a decent GK out there somewhere. Butland has conceded 33 in 20 games and made a few mistakes All keepers seem to be struggling this year...... Loads of goals being scored. Even the very best have off days
Dalek2003 Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Butland has conceded 33 in 20 games and made a few mistakes All keepers seem to be struggling this year...... Loads of goals being scored. Even the very best have off days Yep, I read that somewhere. The trend is to put money into being more offensive and less defensive...apparently.
UpweySaint Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 A class cb for me. Somebody to challeneg Yoshida and Fonte, as I think hoiveld has been poor this season (dissapointed thought he was the more likely to make the step up!) and the likes of Stephens doesn't provide any real challange. Should we be hit by injury, suspension or loss of form i'd be seriously concerned by our options.
Fan The Flames Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Yep, I read that somewhere. The trend is to put money into being more offensive and less defensive...apparently. The weekend of 17/18 Nov there were no nil-nils in the four league divs and the three conference leagues.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Author Posted 8 December, 2012 We would be a very average team if 2 or 3 players got injured...... Our replacements are not like for like
Glasgow_Saint Posted 8 December, 2012 Author Posted 8 December, 2012 The weekend of 17/18 Nov there were no nil-nils in the four league divs and the three conference leagues. Is that a 1st?
S-Clarke Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Same as before, a CB, LB and another winger. Sorted.
VectisSaint Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 has he played the last 28 as a striker? No, and most have been sub appearances, 10-15 minutes. Of course he needs a goal, and he came damn close today, twice, would do wonders for his confidence, unlike the meathead boo boys way of looking at it.
Miltonaggro Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Experienced keeper, beast of a centre half, cover at left back, and Lens from PSV...
Badger Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Experienced keeper, beast of a centre half, cover at left back, and Lens from PSV... I saw a mention on the BBC gossip pages that Lens is now targeted in the £10m bracket, so that probably sees us out of the running. Don't suppose PSV will consider a Mayuka or SDR makeweight, either valued at £5m of course.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 (edited) I saw a mention on the BBC gossip pages that Lens is now targeted in the £10m bracket, so that probably sees us out of the running. Yep, because we haven't signed a player for over £10m before... And we didn't have the 7th highest net spend in European football in the summer of 2012 at over £30 million... Badger Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Yep, because we haven't signed a player for over £10m before... ] yes, but do you see that becoming a routine feature of our transfer policy ?
Matthew Le God Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 yes, but do you see that becoming a routine feature of our transfer policy ? Who knows? I wouldn't rule it out completely just yet... In any case any story that links Wigan to a £10 million transfer lacks a little credibility.
Turkish Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 My ideal window Friedel, Dawson, Olsen and Thomas Ince.
Badger Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Who knows? I wouldn't rule it out completely just yet... In any case any story that links Wigan to a £10 million transfer lacks a little credibility. Fair point.
doggface Posted 8 December, 2012 Posted 8 December, 2012 Friedel or Robinson. Beastly quick cb (spend big), would like to see a dominant centre mid in the diame, mulumbu mould.
SuperMikey Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Why do people want to sign a keeper? We've got 3 that are perfectly capable of doing that job without us having to go out and invest time and money that could be better spent improving other areas of the team. CB, LB and a wide midfielder for me. Caldwell, Olsson and Pennant?

Saint_clark Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 (edited) A centreback. As much as Fonte and Yoshida have improved over recent weeks, we need quality back up and - perhaps almost as important - competition for places to spur them on. Look at how much the likes of Hammond and Chaplow improved when Cork was brought in, how Lambert stepped up with Rodriguez breathing down his neck...and how effective Guly has been knowing that he's skating on very thin ice here with J-Rod and Mayuka in the squad and Lee waiting in the wings. It's a shame Hooiveld choked as I believe he could have settled as others have, but we can't really afford to take the risk. Get another centre back in and we will see a dramatic improvement across the three already here, IMO. As for left back, I honestly don't think it's a problem anymore. Shaw is quality, Fox is solid when called upon and if things get desperate Clyne can hold his own with Richardson at right back. If we can sign a proven Prem keeper then great, but if not stick with what we've got. As far as midfield and attack are concerned...it's all looking good. If we're going to sign anyone there they should be young, hungry with bags of potential, ready to grow with the rest of the squad. Edited 9 December, 2012 by Saint_clark
david in sweden Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 yes, but do you see that becoming a routine feature of our transfer policy ? with £ 60- 90 million sponsorship money at stake, it must be considered a good investment in order to guarantee survival. Euro football may be a long way away yet.
Dr. Kucho Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 CB for me, with Gazzaniga, Davis and Boruc we have 3 decent goalkeepers. It might be optimistic but we should try and get Heitinga from Everton. He doesnt start that often with Distin and Jagielka infront him, and he can play DCM.

Olallana Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 I could see us go for Sebastian Coates, young player that don´t get his opportunities at Liverpool. Dont think they want to sell but perhaps the player wants to leave and now with Gaston at us.....perhaps... Or maybe a 6 month loan for him... Pennant and others in that age range I cant see us go for unless they are CB or GK. Young player that fits the profile is Martin Olsson, Ince or Phillips.
UpweySaint Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Agree with a lot on here. CB and Phillips would suit. Need a little more quality competition in those two areas.
Dalek2003 Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 We REALLY do need a top class keeper and CB
saints_is_the_south Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 My ideal window Friedel, Dawson, Olsen and Thomas Ince. Yep that would do for me. Friended would provide a good short term solution until the summer when we can go out and sign a top GK for the longer term.
Dig Dig Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 if we sign another striker...I may cry West ham is on telly now against Liverpool by the way
Thedelldays Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 West ham is on telly now against Liverpool by the way and winning
lloydie Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 My ideal window Friedel, Dawson, Olsen and Thomas Ince. This. Although id also happily swap both dawson and olsen for just kanya-byik. He'll be an unreal player soon.
lloydie Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 if we sign another striker...I may cry Haha, yes but you just know we will for sh1ts and giggles!
RobM Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 ****-hot CB and another good option for the Lallana/Puncheon/Ramirez positions. Yup, this. The CB should be the big-budget signing IMO, somebody to stabilise us and add experience and leadership at the back. With that, there is no need for a new GK, IMO. Our 'keepers have looked poor at times because they have been so badly exposed, but all three can do a good job.
derry Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Les Reed told a friend of a friend that they have identified four. LB, CB, CM and a defender.
RobM Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Les Reed told a friend of a friend that they have identified four. LB, CB, CM and a defender. A defender as well as a CB and LB... what roles do the CB and LB play? If true, it's good to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak.
