Duchess of Cambridge hospital nurse found dead

RIP poor lady, I suspect that she would have left the employment of that hospital when things

settled down in a week or so. Give it another month or so and she would probably have found

another job because if she was as good as has been said someone would have taken her on.

Sad as I will now sound but anyone who deals with patients has it rammed into their head from

day one - you DON'T ever give out any information about any of your patients over the telephone

no matter who the caller says they are.

Edit: I have now realised she was the person who transferred the call to the ward, she wasn't

the person who actually gave out the information. I wonder how that poor lady is feeling now.

I hope she gets help real soon.

Statement from the radio station:

"Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII's hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and all that have been affected by this situation around the world," said the statement.

"Chief executive officer Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters. They are both deeply shocked and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy."

Vicki Heath, PR manager for Southern Cross Austereo, which owns 2Day FM, said she was being inundated with calls.

The radio station is reportedly already serving two five-year licence probations after serious breaches of the regulator's code.

The Twitter accounts of Greig and Christian have been taken down since the news of Saldanha's death broke. Earlier they had replayed extended clips of the prank call. Twitter users have called for the pair to lose their jobs, they have been subjected to abuse and Greig has received what appear to be threats on the social networking site.

Ok, before I say this, I do obviously think the fact that someone has died is tragic, but, why should either of the nurses involved have needed to get help? All they did was fall for a prank and give out some information when they shouldn’t have. Whilst the info they gave out was personal to one person, ultimately it wasn’t really serious, Kate has gone home and no real harm was done.

Most people make the odd mistake at work occasionally. You learn by them, don’t do it again and move on.

I’m not aware that either of the staff members had been named (before this death), so it’s not even as if they’d have been being hounded by the press I wouldn’t have thought?

There must be more to this lady killing herself than just this event. I can understand something like this being the final straw for someone if they are having a hard time. But IF the only reason she killed herself (if that was the case) is because of this event, then to be honest I think that’s pathetic.

Awful thing to have happened, but I hate this whole SOMEBODY MUST BE TO BLAME culture that's developed now.

I'm sure if the DJs had known the consequences that their actions would have then they wouldn't have made the call in the first place. We don't know about the state this person was in prior to these events, whether she was depressed or just having a tough time. We all did prank calls in our youth, it's a pretty harmless thing. I just don't think the careers of these two men should be ruined because of a really unfortunate incident.

these people weren't youths and their prank was not harmless.

Oh come on, other than being sad and pointless the prank itself wasn't a big deal. The worst thing about the prank itself was that a persons personal information was exposed. It's a shame it's had an impact on someone to the extent it has, but as I said a few posts above this woman clearly had other issues. No-one kills themselves because of such a trivial event, she's got two children FFS, killing yourself over that one event would be ludicrous. If the prank hadn’t happened some other event would have pushed her over the edge and none of us would have even heard of her or of her death

The fact that the radio station is serving two probations would suggest that they regularly overstep the taste line, and this case with tragic consequences. This is not a case of temporary lapse of judgement, they do this kind of thing on a regular basis. I believe another presenter got a 14 year old girl to reveal to being raped when she was 12, live on air whilst rigged up to a lie detector. Classy.

Youve upset me with this robust disagreement and rebuttal. I'm off to have a think. I may or may not be back.

Nothing that Jeremy Kyle hasn't done.

I was going to reply to this but then I saw that Spudgun did all the work for me.

PIE must admit tht I don't know what I think about this. It's very sad that the lady has died and I know that the DJs can't really be held responsible, but at the same time they cannot be deemed t be completely blameless. It's tricky.

Oh, that's OK then.

Seriously, that's commonplace now. The shows that you see on weird satellite channels usually treat horiffic subject matters like child abuse, serial murders etc as mere titillation. Pick up any of those glossy magazines you see in a newsagents and there will be something equally awful, if not worse, on the front cover. That's our "culture" nowadays.

You are right in a sense that if the call had never happened, this tragedy could probably have been avoided. But how were they to know what the knock-on effects would be? If they had spoken to 99% of the other staff at the hospital they would've been told where to go and been hung up on. This may seem incredibly insensitive, but it seems like it was the naivety of the receptionist that was the cause of this whole thing, not the fact that a couple of DJs called up the hospital for a prank. Obviously it was an immature and pointless prank, but it was just that. This whole witch-hunt is completely absurd.

Nor I, and some call me old-fashioned. I'm pretty sure that these two hoaxers never even considered this outcome, but that's the law of unintended consequences. It's not an action that I would ever have undertaken because I don't find it funny and like to think that I still have some dignity. There's always a victim in these circumstances.
