Singeon Sears Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 I was at that Liverpool match when MLT scored that goal (over Mark Wright). The warm applause esp. from the Kop end was quite a moment. Of course they were playing us, at the time an inferior side, which meant maybe they could "afford" to applaud an oppostion goal. That said, for me it wasn't just the goal - to me it felt like pure respect for someone who was a special one off talent - and they recognised it. Anyway enough of that, there is no love lost between me and Liverpool (and most other teams), but i appreciated that
Saints boy in Leeds Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 So I guess you go mental like you should when a goal goes in when a great tricky run is completed, you people.
Colinjb Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 (edited) The only goal against us i've every come close to applauding at the moment it was struck was Rochdale's second in their win at St Mary's. A beautifully hit goal, the win was fully deserved for the underdog. I was gutted but could appreciate what they had just achieved, one of the few (the only?) sides to do the double over us on our promotion year. Dr Who? Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 I have clapped goals as a referee, as love seeing great football. I have also clapped a really great bit of skill against Saints as well on a few occasions, as well as goal.
sandwichsaint Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 Home to Forest on a grey, grey day when we were just about at the peak of our slump, the year we went down from the champ (guess it would have been under the Dutch duo). Midway through the second half, totally featureless drab 0-0, Forest player receives the ball about 35 yards from goal and without looking up or breaking stride the Forest player first times it in a perfect parobola, over KD who was by no means out of position, and into the Northam net, the ball bouncing perfectly between the goal line and the back of the net. Cue me leaping to my feet and applauding widely, looking round to see maybe a third of the supporters in the Northam/Kingsland corner doing the same! Just so out-of-keeping with anything we had seen before, either in that game or any the preceeding games. Just a complete one-off, a special 'I was there' moment, I can't remember who the scorer was but we have discussed this goal on here before. I don't make a habit of this sort of thing but I would quite happily do it again if the situation arose!

Whitey Grandad Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 So why only goals that are scored? Do you also applaud opposition players after a particularly skilful run? Or a last ditch tackle to prevent one of our players scoring? Or a fantastic save from a Saints penalty? All great football skills that should be appreciated I'm sure you'd agree? And why only clap and not cheer? Giving appreciation for something is a bit of a waste of time if the supposed recipient is unaware of it, surely worth joining in with whatever songs are being sung in praise of their ability as well? To some extent I do, but I would never cheer the opposition, that is a different response. A polite clap is always appropriate, even if the object of the appreciation can't hear it. I don't sing much anyway, but I don't usually sing my joy when we score a goal.

Hamilton Saint Posted 6 December, 2012 Share Posted 6 December, 2012 Anyone who claps when the ball flies in our net is dead inside. What a silly comment! It is the exact opposite. When someone applauds (very occasionally) a spectacular display of skill by an opponent, they are really showing respect and love for the game itself. It is the person who is unable to ever feel this magnanimous and unguarded response to competitive sport who is really "dead inside".

John Boy Saint Posted 7 December, 2012 Share Posted 7 December, 2012 A few times where the build up to finish in the back of our net has been very good I have found myself clapping in a strange slow way almost like "that was a very good goal" and sarcastically "oh well done lads for not defending that"! Funnily enough at those times I have heard many around me doing exactly the same. The strangest clapping the oppo's I can recall, goals in the opening thread aside, was when we played Steaua Bucharest back in 2003 (?) they had a moment of inter play in the middle of the park which was mesmerising fluid football, when they made what turned out to be the last sublime pass, the majority inside SMS just broke into applause. It was one of those surreal moments, where you, along with many others, just got hypnotised by the football.

Chez Posted 7 December, 2012 Share Posted 7 December, 2012 Cue me leaping to my feet and applauding widely, looking round to see maybe a third of the supporters in the Northam/Kingsland corner doing the same! `leaping to your feet'. Bloody hell, I assume you are exaggerating? As someone that was in that area of the ground I can assure others that in no way shape or form did a third of supporters leap to their feet in applause. Garner's goal was a corker, and there was appreciation amidst the usual frustration and anger, but do me a favour. I actually remember the goal vividly. Unfortunately my brother in law is a massive Forest fan, so it was particularly painful and I was reminded of it numerous times afterwards right up until we smashed them at their place last season. OK! 'clambered to my feet' would be more accurrate but I was one of the first up and he definitely did get a mini standing ovation, and slightly more clapping from the sedentary position. That's how good the football was, we used to sit down and watch it.
