Clapping An Opposition Goal

I was watching some clips of MLT's goals and noticed that in away games against Blackburn and Liverpool, their fans clapped him (His goals)

I can only remember one goal at the Dell (Think it was Huckerby) where the home fans clapped (Myself included), or maybe it's because not many people score worldies against us. Not in favour of a pompey/henri type love in, but is it something thing that has gone from the game or just Saints fans.

One day, when you're all grown up, you'll understand what a cu.nt you make yourself look most of the time.
But who would you clap? And when? We see tons of good goals scored against us, goals that if you were at a game as a neutral you may applaud, but no real need or point to applaud when against your own team?

Re. the OP - I remember seeing the applause at the time - think a lot of oppossition sides knew Tiss was a one-off and maybe we weren't seen as a threat or rival to those clubs, plus football has changed - can't ever imagine seeing that theses days.

Yes, quite often clap good goals at SMS... ...I think most people will appreciate good football whether they acknowledge it with polite applause or not.

I have in the past but not now. Too worried about the reaction around me. I just don't fancy a smack around the head. Too many 'tough' guys that take offence. Gone are the days when you applauded an opponents great play/goal.

Anyone that claps the other team scoring is a tw*t.

I bump into a lot of scousers who tell me the same Southampton story; how they were all so amazed at a MLT goal they stood up and applauded.

Respect for the game; it's good to see.

To be fair when you see the Kop's reaction to that goal (think it was Mark Wright's head he flicked it over twice) you have to take your hat off, scousers generally know and appreciate decent football.

Agree with SM that you'll be unlikely to see that sort of thing these days, probably just a load of scallys giving Wright abuse for not closing/ chopping Matty down or something. Just the way football grounds have gone imo.

If you look at the fans at anfield they clap MLT after he chipped the ball over mark wright (I think) and slotted it home, I clap if I witness a great finish or something that only a few could achieve.

Williams' winner for bristol rovers at st marys. 3-2. Gutting but fantastic strike

A goal like this I wouldn't clap, as I would feel pig sick.

But as I said about Julian Gray's goal, that is acceptable, if it ever is.

It shows appreciation of great football skills.
So why only goals that are scored? Do you also applaud opposition players after a particularly skilful run? Or a last ditch tackle to prevent one of our players scoring? Or a fantastic save from a Saints penalty? All great football skills that should be appreciated I'm sure you'd agree? And why only clap and not cheer? Giving appreciation for something is a bit of a waste of time if the supposed recipient is unaware of it, surely worth joining in with whatever songs are being sung in praise of their ability as well?

its quite obvious that they limit their appreciation of the spectacular from the opposition with a muted clap for goals only.....maybe
