Dave Brubeck

One of the first jazz musicians I ever listened to. Loved Take Five, Blue Rondo a la Turk, It's a Raggy Waltz, etc. More formally presented, perhaps, and with less improvisation, but it really did swing!

That's why he was my favourite jazz musician. I think jazz is great when it "sticks to the script" but just loses me when the musicians "go off on one" for a couple of minutes before coming back to the original tune.

when I was a kid, at every Sunday lunch for many years my Dad would play Brubeck to educate our small ears into enjoying jazz. Some purists might sniff at his populist music but its still my favourite jazz to listen to over Coltrane or Davis, brilliant though they both are. I don't have to work too hard to listen to Brunswick, whereas some more purist stuff you really have to be in the right mood to listen to, and they can take a lot of effort to enjoy.
