Sheaf Saint Posted 3 December, 2012 Share Posted 3 December, 2012 I'm thinking of treating myself to an upgrade cos the one I have, although not that old, isn't very high spec and I really want to be able to enjoy Far Cry 3 to it's absolute best. I have a ASrock n68 c-s mobo, that uses an NVIDIA chipset, with AMD Phenom II quad core processor, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether I would be better off getting an AMD or a NVIDIA graphics card to compliment it. I'm currently using an ATI Radeon HD5670 which was about the best I could afford at the time, but my system struggles with the really resource-hungry games like Crysis 2. pap Posted 3 December, 2012 Share Posted 3 December, 2012 According to this month's PC Pro A-List, the baddest boy on the block is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680. £400 notes matey! Yaargh, etc. Mind you, that's about the same as a Wii U, and will give you performance so good I suspect you'll spend half your time rubbing your eyes in confused wonder at the framerate. Not bad for the money/ Their honourable mention goes to another Nvidia card, GTX 660 Ti £230.
Sheaf Saint Posted 4 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 4 December, 2012 I think they are both still a little out of my price range. I'm looking to spend no more than about £150 really. Might wait til january to see if there are any good deals on, but just really want to know whether a AMD or NVIDIA card will be better with my existing setup. Sheaf Saint Posted 27 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 27 December, 2012 Went for this one in the end. Just ordered it today with my xmas bonus money. Spent hours looking at various options over the last few weeks and this seems to be by far the best I can get for the money.
pedg Posted 27 December, 2012 Share Posted 27 December, 2012 Went for this one in the end. Just ordered it today with my xmas bonus money. Spent hours looking at various options over the last few weeks and this seems to be by far the best I can get for the money. Just updated our son's PC with a similar card and it appears to be fine. Main advantage over some of the similar powered nvidia ones appears to be these are a lot quieter.
Sheaf Saint Posted 28 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 28 December, 2012 Arrived today, along with the extra RAM and PSU upgrade I ordered to go with it. Installed and running nicely, with some scope for overclocking as well it seems (although I need to investigate this further before I crank it up and melt the card!). Got Far Cry 3 running at 'ultra' settings perfectly well, but had to trim the AA down a notch to get it running properly smooth. Pretty happy really.
