anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 (edited) I lived in Northern Germany at the time. I only remember this match as I was considered too young to go but my Dad went an took my older brother Edit: Just watched the clip, that was never a penalty lol Edited 28 November, 2012 by anothersaintinsouthsea
The Kraken Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 did Shilton ever save a penalty? He was awful at them, wasn't he? I remember his laboured efforts in the 1990 WC shootout, we were never going to win that unless Germany took the Chris Waddle approach.

Eric The Red Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 I was there! Tedious coach journey, leaving the day before the game, got 'kettled' in Hamburg by the police so saw nothing of the City and had to sit on solid bench seats which were so hard you needed to get a foam cushion to sit on. Oh and had golf balls thrown at us All in all a really great trip (not)
Turkish Posted 28 November, 2012 Author Share Posted 28 November, 2012 One of the things I remember clearly was the commentator saying 'it's just beginning to drizzle here and the scoreboard looks very cruel, Hamburg 1 Southampton 0' What great days they must have been to be a Saints fan, a great entertaining side with top players and European football most seasons and not a fancy dress or tinsel wig in sight. krissyboy31 Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 I was there! Missed the flight to Hamburg and had to overnight on the Tuesday in Dussledorf and get the train up on the morning of the match. There was a fair bit of trouble during the match that was mostly instigated by locally stationed squaddies. No problems afterwards though and there must have been a 1000 Saints fans lapping up the hospitality of the Reeperbahn after the game. Great memories! Cheam Saint Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 Went to the home match. Think it was 0-0? I went to this also. I think Steve Moran had a goal ruled off-side. The weirdest thing was seeing us play in the blue strip at home. That was the rule back then. If there was a clash, the home team wore their away strip. It confused the hell out of the home fans at corners, singing "come on you blues".

As said above we were held in a massive car park from lunch time allowed no where near city centre then buses escorted out afterwards. Came out the stadium at end and got chased back inside by massive hamburg mob chucking anything they could at us who were cleared by the German riot squad. Good experience if not a tad disappointing
100%Red&White Posted 29 November, 2012 Share Posted 29 November, 2012 We played them in a friendly a few years later, missed out on this trip but knew a lot of lads that went - a number of lads from the Painted Wagon and (the old) Warrens. I don't know how it could have happened but most went out in tatty old jeans and Ts but came back with a very impressive wardrobe of designer gear? Not to mention some colourful tales of the Reeperbahn!
knellster Posted 29 November, 2012 Share Posted 29 November, 2012 We also went out on the Persil deal. I seem to recall some fans getting grief on the ferry from Dover for having their Union Jack hanging upside down. The players had a "hit the bar" competition in training on the day of the match, and they then put it into practice during the match with a fairly easy header when we were 1-0 down (can't remember who it was though). Other memories : It was my first experience of being cs gassed, we saved a fortune by using 5p coins instead of D Marks in the Reeperbahn machines, a group of London Saints were drunkenly waving and making stupid gestures at each other across a peep show stage which must have been a bit insulting for the poor woman who was trying to entertain us; and we stayed in a tiny hotel called the Hotel Popp. Many years later when I had a bit more cash I stayed in the posh hotel next door - the two establishments couldn't have been more different. Phil the Saint Posted 30 November, 2012 Share Posted 30 November, 2012 I was there as well 4 of us went on the persil deal by train and stayed 4 nights. My brother and another mate went by coach and stayed a couple of nights. A lot of squaddies supporting us. Afterwards we were being escorted by the riot poilce through the wooded park to the underground station when the Hamburg fans set-off a thunderflash we just stood amused as all the riot police ran into the bushes to hide! TheMidfieldGeneral Posted 30 November, 2012 Share Posted 30 November, 2012 I was 18, and 16 off us went via Persil tickets taken from Bitterne Sainsburys leaving open boxes on the shelf. :-) Stayed over in Amersfoort youth hostel the night before. Went to Rotterdam Amsterdam along te way. Got caught with a bottle of ammonia by plain clothes OB in Rotterdam. We were gonna fire it from water pistols at the hamburg fans.... WTF?!?!? (seemed a fun idea at the time) Spoke to a Brummie in Amaterdam square and said where we were going... He offered us a Hand Grenade.. "To send the Hamburg fans fishing" as he put it. Offer declined. Made our way to the ground.. Got ambushed at the train station. Saints 1 Hamburg 0 Got to the ground and got ambushed again by a load of skinheads Saints 2 Hamburg 0. **** game.. Was stood next to that fence.. (Blue jumper and White Ellesse ski hat) Had a good time in the reeperbahn after.. All stayed in one paid for single room on the floor. So cold tho.. Loads of other stuff happened.... Got some really good photos from it.

snap Posted 30 November, 2012 Share Posted 30 November, 2012 Great laugh general. Think I was the only one who paid for the hotel room. That bar by the train station was really cheap. Tamesaint Posted 30 November, 2012 Share Posted 30 November, 2012 What a great thread. So much that I had forgotten about. The hit the bar competition when the players were training. The squaddies causing the trouble at the ground - several of them were Preston fans and were wearing PNE scarves from their wrists. The riot police coming into the crowd spraying cs gas. Thank God for 5p's. The Reeperbahn was the highlight. Who on earth would do such a thing as wave to their mates across a peep show stage?? A disgusting waste of 5p!!! I remember entering one club and watching a couple at it on the stage. We sat down and were immediately approached by a hostess who wanted us to spend £100 on a bottle of champagnee. As soon as we refused the couple stpped and started drinking coffee until the next punters entered the club. My sister got married the Saturday after the game. I got home the afternoon before the wedding. My mother always wonders why I looked so pale in the wedding photos!!

modern matron Posted 1 December, 2012 Share Posted 1 December, 2012 Remember it well, squaddies caused trouble so police used CS gas during the game. It took ages to get out and was the first time I'd been videoed by police as we were let out. Hamburg fans chased a load of us through a park, but they were chased by loads of cops with dogs - all very exciting at the time! Then the reeperbahn and...... Saints Warrior Posted 2 December, 2012 Share Posted 2 December, 2012 I went and had a great time. On Carnell Coaches. Still got my programme and a few bits from hotel. Got arrested (or maybe for our saftey) with 3 other Saints fans after the match in the park as we got lost and mixed in with the German fans. The police left us in the van then came back with roll mops and chips and dropped us off near out hotel, Danke das is gute meine politiz! The Saints fans were pulling the metal fance all game. We were on upper tear and ran around to see if we could get round the graond (like wembley) only to be confronted by police with guns, we went back to out section! The reeperbahn was full of Saints and mostly carrying crates of beer, I have a photo of the gate which has the under 18 warning on but nothing else exciting!! What an experience, it was brilliant and a proper good old fashioned Saints on tour trip! Anyone got any photos??
