The Kraken Posted 28 November, 2012 Author Share Posted 28 November, 2012 Few years/40 odd years. They're basically the same thing. Football did begin in 1992 though, lest we forget.
tajjuk Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 You could just call it the 'European Cup', no pre-requisite for Champions there.
aintforever Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 So it definitely wasn't just for champions? I always thought 1st and 2nd qualified since it's been the Champions League. Please forgive me. C*ck I will leave this thread for you schoolkids.

The Kraken Posted 28 November, 2012 Author Share Posted 28 November, 2012 You mean leave it for those who are far more knowledgeable than yourself? A little learning goes a long way. Especially for poor old aintforever, who always seems overly keen to throw out insults at others accusing them of being "thick" whilst simultaneously showing a breathtaking level of ignorance himself. The9 Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 A classic pedant post (thankfully very rare nowadays) from The9 here... Actually the European Cup AND "original" Champions League were not just for the national Champions - they were for national Champions AND the current European Cup holders (first competition aside). For instance Nottingham Forest managed to win their second European Cup in 1980 despite not being English Champions since winning it in April/May 1978. However, where the European Cup winners were also their national champions the same season, the competition was, by default, purely for national Champions. I can't be bothered to check which seasons that happened, and of course some will argue that the definition of "Champions" should include the holders, but it wasn't automatically the case with the Champions League until Liverpool won it in 2005 when outside the qualification places and forced UEFA's hand to sneak themselves into the qualifying round. Also, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League without "significant investment" around 1999, as well as Everton who were previously mentioned. Barry Sanchez Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 I would love for the self indulgent so called larger clubs to **** off, what do they give us? Nothing but cling ons from our own Cities, parasites the lot of them. If Chelsea, United, Arsenal, City and Liverpool went it would leave us with far better League with a more open dynamic. Of course they would not go though as their fans would be up in arms as how could they afford the away games? The champions league now is sterile and we have far too mauch European football, knockout Champions would be far more exciting but obviously would not make as much money. Whoa there. Hold those horses. Please tell me you're kidding? £15M on Alan Shearer, a world record transfer at the time, plus many millions spent elsewhere on the side over a course of years wasn't significant? Well, blow me down. aintforever Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 You mean leave it for those who are far more knowledgeable than yourself? I was wrong in that the CL for a few years, about 15 or so years ago was for Champions only but in the main it has not just been for the Champions so my point is still valid. Anyway, not that it matters, except for the usual nobs on here.
Window Cleaner Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 Good, we need more midweek football. If you're in the PL and not qualified for Europe there are far too few games. Need to bring back the Anglo-Italian Cup or whatever it was. Clubs like Saints have to keep on a whole load of players who's utility is negligeable. September Saint Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20523405 European football's governing body Uefa is considering ditching the Europa League in favour of extending the Champions League from 32 to 64 teams...... Unless we have about 30 players of EPL standard we'll end up doing a Birmingham or Newcastle Even the big boys find european games have an affect on domestic games. Be careful for what you wish!!! Fitzhugh Fella Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 Good and bad in this Good Gets rid of the Europa Cup Spreads the money around a bit more Gives clubs like us the chance we otherwise wouldn't get Bad The 5th best club in Scotland would not reach in the Johnstones Paint semis so there has got to be a robust sytem devised for qualification
Frank's cousin Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 Remember before Platini was elected president of UEFA, he was all for ditching both competition and reinstating a single nowckout format of the old European cup, but with far more places availble to each country - in fact almost open entry, like the FA club with all sides from top leagues allowed in... top 6 or so from each country would be seaded and only join in in Round 3 etc, and prelim qualifying round s for the lower ranked sides - one of random draw with home and away fixtures introduced say when down to the last 16... Thought it was a cracking idea, but dismissed by the rich clubs who live in fear of an early knockout in an away fixture to Maddogs of Baku or something.... melmacian_saint Posted 28 November, 2012 Share Posted 28 November, 2012 They should go back to the old UEFA cup knockout format! If each main round was worth say minimum 3-4 million pounds clubs would actually give a fuss and TV rights would account for more money because there are less games! Having said this, it will only be a couple of years before they decide that no one gives a turd about the UCL group stages either and proceed to create a closed, invite-only European Super League. Football has been destroyed, no one seems to care about anything any more. I still remember when games on live TV were a reason for crowds to fill up stadiums instead of an excuse to stay home!
