I was just taking a gander at the Prediction League and I was struck by a blinding flash of the obvious (obvious in my opinion anyway!).

Note that as someone who doesn't even participate in it, I feel very highly qualified to share this observation with you.

Here goes.

All the names at the top of the league (that would be the people who guess the right score from time to time but guess the correct winner/loser fairly frequently), do not in any way correspond with the names of the posters on the main board who voice the most ferocious or opinionated posts (and when I say 'opinionated' I mean, defended as an opinion but worded as a fact).

The conclusion I'm therefore drawing is that those that know something about the game are generally quiet unassuming folk and those that don't (and have low scores on the prediction league) like to shout loud to make up for it.

(Puts hands over ears and shuts eyes)

Discuss ;)

PS - I suppose some people may not have entered the Prediction League so that their lack of football knowledge wasn't highlighted, so that's another reason they don't appear - myself excluded of course :?

Could it also be that some people enjoy football as a sport/day out on the **** rather than as statistical co.ck waving bullsh.it, or spreadsheets masquerading as computer games, that so many of the semi retarded world of warcraft playing geeks in their full kits like?

Good point

That'll probably be the view of everyone who isn't in the top 20

Football knowledge or lack thereof does not really matter in the pred/fantasy leagues etc.

Case in point: I have a friend who is a bit of a high-flyer, very good at anaylsis/statistics that sort of thing. She knows nothing (and I cannot emphasise this enough: nothing) about football. However when she played the Fantasy Football league in her office, she came something like 8th out of 20. It's all stats, conjecture analysis and luck.

For instance, for Saints v Norwich, one can look at Saints' earlier result and form, and Norwich's as well. Look at home and away records, previous results between the two, current injuries/suspensions/any internal difficulties and make a wild stab in the dark. If you're good at making stabs in the dark, you have a better chance of being correct!!

Have we stumbled on something that disproves my theory completely then :?

You need know nothing about football to do well on a prediction league, and you also need know nothing about football to shout loudly your facts (sorry i meant opinions!) on a discussion board :(

Back to the drawing board then

Do you think Britain was poorly treated during the 'Cod Wars' of the mid 1970s?

Donno, wasn't born then and wasn't taught that at school

Well I was top of the table 2 games ago before we started our good run..so that makes me a harbinger of doom I reckon. However I will take my personal slide down the table as saints improve. And I will promise to be more positive in the future. BTW I have us down as winning 3-1 v Norwich and I predicted that and have stuck to it for many weeks.

Genuine question: aren't fan-based prediction leagues usually won by pessimists?

(e.g. most fans will predict a better result for Saints than happens on average?)
