Went to the pub next to the station before the Everton game, think it was the Crown or something.

The Crown's alright, and if I remember is open early. However I almost didn't make it out of the fabulous Ship and Mitre last time I was there. If you're a real ale drinker then look no further.

I can also recommend(ish) some of the Okells pubs that are dotted around Liverpool. Okells is an IOM brewery who in my opinion do fantastic ale. Pubs can be a bit grotty though.

I recommended the Ship & Mitre on the Away Fans thread and got ridiculed by someone with a total lack of appreciation of a decent pub and excellent pint. But I'll be going there. Definitely the best real ale choice.

Mate, I've been there tons of times. Between 1994 and 1998, it was right over the road from my Uni. Used to go there a lot for lunch, and was dragged there twice this year by some mates a few years older than me.

I wasn't having a go at you specifically, more these people:-

Here is a map of pubs worth visiting in the city centre.

I like to start at the Philharmonic Rooms, work my way down towards Pilgrim Street and Roscoe Street, eventually heading toward Mathew Street.

Few points of interest. Concert Square is your young person's place. I've marked MODO on the map for that. I wouldn't recommend that real ale enthusiasts go there.

Mathew St pretty much caters for all ages, but is particularly suited to the 30+ crowd. Don't go to Rubber Soul. It's full of scals.

I've got a real soft spot for the Grapes (Roscoe St) and the Hanover Hotel (Hanover St). Neither get particularly busy; both good stop-over points for further beers. Oddly enough; pretty much all the out of the way pubs have good real ales. They also have the added advantage of having women as patrons.

The Arkles is a great pre-match pub, remember walking in there before a Saints evening game years ago and being bought a pint by a scouser because i couldn't get near the bar!

Grapes is a good pub, if people want a laugh after the game then Mathew St for the visitor and lads who want some possible overnight activities for sure, for people who want quiet go on Victoria Street as well, s****y but some class birds get up there as well if you got the money.

Albert on Lark Lane, there is the Victoria which is called the Arms in the Vale though, rather interesting pubs they are as well.

just can't remember, it was across the road from his flat when he was at Liverpool Uni, haven't seen him for donkey's years, doesn't appear on any social network either.. pity really, one of my best mates for about 15 years, we did Beechwood, Tauntons and Southampton Boys together.

Could be either as there are students in both areas, the Albert is famous on the Lane, the Lane is a great place for people staying up here, about 10 boozers and bars and also good restaurants and 5 mins taxi from town, I will spend my Saturday night up there after the match probably.
