Saint in Paradise Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 It might not keep you alive for long, but a Siberian firm is offering survival kits to anyone who fears the end of the world is nigh. And for everyone else, it makes for a fun stocking-filler come Christmas – provided the world hasn’t ended by then! The apocalypse kit boasts medication, including heart medicine, soap, some candles and matches, a can of fish, a pack of buckwheat, a bottle of vodka, a notepad and pencil – and a rope (possibly intended for the less optimistic!). It also includes a blank ID card, to be filled in by hand should your existing IDs and cards be “demagnetized” during the apocalypse. There’s also something for the young and the young at heart. The kit includes an instruction card with rules to various games to pass away any apocalypse-induced boredom. Surprisingly produced by a bridal party operator in Tomsk, Western Siberia, the kit will set you back 890 rubles – roughly $28. The company has repeatedly stated the kit is meant to be taken with a pinch of salt, however, the joke has not gone down well with local authorities which, according to Sostav.ru, are apparently trying to ban sales over the kit’s inclusion of vodka and medication – as both require licenses to be sold. http://rt.com/news/apocalypse-survival-kit-siberia-agency-marina-wedding-661/
Spudders Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 I like the fact that they've provided a blank ID card and a pencil, so that if a proper ID card such as a driving licence becomes 'demagnetized' the fact it's still a driving licence becomes unimportant, suddenly a generic card with your name written in pencil trumps an official licence that can't be scanned! Classic, those Siberians are zany aren't they!
dubai_phil Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Down here we liked this one. http://www.albawaba.com/entertainment/sandance-452259 Sandance is our latest massive booze up with accompanying bands - a weird amalgam of Indie Hip Hop & Celeb DJ.... They are having a NYE bash on the Beach at Atlantis. The team behind the Sandance music festival at Atlantis in Dubai have urged partygoers not to panic, insisting their New Year’s Eve event will go ahead despite predictions the world will end 10 days before. And worried fans were reassured on the Sandance facebook page that they would get a full refund should the world indeed end on December 21. Predictions abound online that Armageddon will come on 21//12/12. The reason for this date is that the Mayan calendar, which has run for thousands of years, stops on that day. A spokesman for Think, the events company that helps organise Sandance, told 7DAYS: “Despite rumours that the world will end on December 21, preparations are continuing as planned for Sandance on New Year’s Eve. “After checking with NASA (via its website), we’re confident that our five-star music festival will go ahead despite pessimistic predictions.” The advice from NASA’s Don Yeomans, who works on the space agency’s near-earth programme, was that the Mayan calendar might end four days before Christmas but that it’s only the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. Yeomans said: “On December 31 our calendar ends but a new one starts on January 1.” The space expert also discounted other Doomsday scenarios that are doing the rounds - such as an apocalyptic solar storm or that the planet Niburu will crash into the Earth. He said: “Thousands of astronomers who scan the night skies on a daily basis have not seen this.” The Sandance spokesman said it would seem that plenty of people are confident they will make it to 2013 judging by ticket sales. “Early Bird tickets and tables are selling extremely well and we’re predicting a sell-out event,” he said. “The only people who won’t be celebrating with us will be those who leave their ticket buying to the last Mayan minute, which really would feel like the end of the world.” New Year Sandance will be headlined by Ellie Goulding. The line-up also includes Rita Ora, Paul Van Dyk, Roger Sanchez and Zane Lowe.
Saint_clark Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 The end of the world is clearly just a ruse to distract those who bought a ticket from the fact Atlantis is under the ocean.
