SuperMikey Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Going for a long weekend with some mates on Thursday. Where's good? We're staying near Dam Square, in Jordaan. Pretty central location which we're pleased with. We're planning on visiting a fair few coffee shops, as well as a few theatres. Casa Rosso comes highly recommended apparently. swannymere Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 If you've got time to kill in the afternoon's take a water taxi from the other side of the bridge adjacent to Centraal Station and take a leisurely cruise around to the Heineken brewery it's great. Stay clear of the Bulldog Cafe's, and find an Argentinian Steak house for the best steaks i've had outside Brazil and Australia. The red light district will be eye-opening especially the dark and dingy corners of it, the ladies range from Victoria's Secret to women who probably should carry a health warnign for your eyes and health. Enjoy.
Saintandy666 Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Liedesplein(spelling?!) is great for bars and stuff(as is red light district). Really excellent 5 euro pizza pasta restaurant in that area called 'il Palio' in Liedesplein. There are quite a lot of Argentinian steak houses, but I avoided them on my trips because they were all relatively pricey. If you aren't just going to get high and drunk, check out vondelpark. And also Anne Franks house. Oh, and invest in a tram pass, though if you feel like walking, nothing is horrendously far, but the tram passes are incredible value for money. Tokyo-Saint Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 (edited) Let's face it if you are going with the lads, you are going to visit a couple of cafes and then wander round and round the RLD until everyone that is going to bone a pro bones one. For a laugh go there in the day time, the day time hookers are a completely different kettle of fish. Glasgow_Saint Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Heineken Experience is good..... Get a few drinks on the way round and only costs about 10 euro
Tokyo-Saint Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Forgot to say, try and see an Ajax game if you can. It's cheap, pretty easy and well worth it. Will get you away form the tits and the weed for a bit as well.
saintbletch Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 If you like your music, try to get along to a gig at the Paradiso Club. It's a great and historic venue and a good way to start your evening. Try to moderate your THC intake beforehand, too much can spoil the gig! ben05 Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Went in October for a mate’s 21st. Very strange city. We stayed in the bulldog hostel bang in the middle of the red light district. Very clean and friendly, well worth popping in for a drink or two. Best thing I think we did was hire bikes for the day, got to see the majority of the city, stopped now and again at a few coffee shops. Also did the canal boat tour which was interesting, but not good when you’re hanging. The RLD is just mad, quite a surreal experience but chatting to the hookers was always a good laugh. Enjoy! Whitey Grandad Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Went in 1969 for 9 nights with my (now) wife. We stayed near the Leidseplein and did most of the sights. The trams are good but you can walk everywhere, it's not too big. On our last day we did a morning visit to the Amstel brewery and both of us got tanked up - for free - very educational. I don't know if they still do them. One regular said that the Heineken tour was better.I guess you won't be too interested in the art galleries and museums? Turkish Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Are you going dressed as the Honey Monster Mikey?
Tokyo-Saint Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 That's better Turkish, Mikey is a much more realistic target.
This Charming Man Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Personally, I thought Amsterdam was over-rated and expensive. The nightlife was a bit of a let down for me. Then again, I've never been into smoking weed (mincers drug) so that probably detracted from the whole experience for me. Hamburg is much better and much cheaper, IMO. Joe Kirkup Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Lived there for 18 months in 80-81 Can't remember anything except Heineken tour every sat morning at 8.30 with as much as you could drink for a couple of guilders. Nice start to the weekend.

COMEONYOUREDS Posted 27 November, 2012 Share Posted 27 November, 2012 Went there last January for my birthday Cassa Rosso was one of the ****test, weirdist experiences of my whole life.. reckon you're probably better off paying for a seedier place if you don't want to feel like you've been fleeced. 50 euros to get in with 4 small drinks.. 35 without drinks.. no cash bar.. you'll realise if you stay longer than an hour the performers are on hour loop. Possibly the least arousing thing you could do in Amsterdam! Not bad for a laugh.. but an expensive one
SuperMikey Posted 4 December, 2012 Author Share Posted 4 December, 2012 Casa Rosso is €40 without drinks now! Weird experience definitely. Ended up spending most days in coffee shops or walking round. Had a great time (and birthday) though!
