Baldbarbarian Posted 26 November, 2012 Posted 26 November, 2012 Hi guys, does anyone know where I can take my Astra to be looked at?. Engine management light came on yesterday. Vauxhall want £95 just to plug it in to have a look, this obviously doesnt include any labour etc on top!.
Dazza82 Posted 26 November, 2012 Posted 26 November, 2012 Most garages will run diagnostics for you and only charge you if you dont have the work done by them, If you do have the work done by them they wont charge you for the diagnostics. Are you having any trouble with the car at all? It could just turn out to be a sensor.
Baldbarbarian Posted 26 November, 2012 Author Posted 26 November, 2012 not really any trouble with it at all, the engine light is intermittent on start up (sometimes its on but the next time it starts up it isnt). I think it may need a service and a tune up as hasnt had one yet this year?.
Dazza82 Posted 26 November, 2012 Posted 26 November, 2012 Check with any of your local garages to see if the do diagnostics (most do now) it will more than likely be a sensor that needs replacing that should cost depending on the garage £100-£120 Max including labour, part and diagnostic
Dazza82 Posted 26 November, 2012 Posted 26 November, 2012 Dont know if this is too far out of your way but its a vauxhall specialist http://www.vauxtech.co.uk/services.html or try this one http://www.shirleygarageservices.co.uk/vauxhall-specialists-southampton.html
Baldbarbarian Posted 26 November, 2012 Author Posted 26 November, 2012 very useful mate thank you. Vauxtech is just down the road from me so will give them a call.

egg Posted 26 November, 2012 Posted 26 November, 2012 Try Pittstop in Shirley. £25 for diagnostics and very fair for repair costs. Fault could be anything tbh. Get the diagnosis and take it from there.
Baldbarbarian Posted 26 November, 2012 Author Posted 26 November, 2012 Thanks for your help guys, gives me something to go on. much appreciated
SO16_Saint Posted 26 November, 2012 Posted 26 November, 2012 You can buy diagnostic kits / system on eBay. Not very expensive, if memory serves...
Turkish Posted 27 November, 2012 Posted 27 November, 2012 I always use Nandrews in Shirely. Good honest blokes and fairly cheap as well. Was recommended them by my taxi driver mate, a lot of the local cabbies use them as well which is a good recommendation for me.
Baldbarbarian Posted 27 November, 2012 Author Posted 27 November, 2012 cheers Turkish, am going to give Vauxtech a bell in a bit but will keep it in mind.
ecuk268 Posted 29 November, 2012 Posted 29 November, 2012 Pete King in Salem St Shirley. Honest bloke (also an SFC season ticket holder).
mcjwills Posted 29 November, 2012 Posted 29 November, 2012 Mine comes on after a long journey and it is the exhaust gas regulating valve is a bit sticky, usually goes off after a trip or two. As long is it is not oil or water the chances are its only a sensor.
egg Posted 29 November, 2012 Posted 29 November, 2012 Please don't be fooled by "its only a sensor". That sensor could be a crankshaft sensor. Mine failed causing the car to completely cut of on the outside lane of the M271. You get a warning late, pay someone £25 and find out what exactly it is.
Baldbarbarian Posted 30 November, 2012 Author Posted 30 November, 2012 its being looked at today so will keep you guys posted, cheers for the advice as I am pretty useless when it comes to the mechanics of a car !
Handyman Posted 1 December, 2012 Posted 1 December, 2012 Mine comes on after a long journey and it is the exhaust gas regulating valve is a bit sticky, usually goes off after a trip or two. As long is it is not oil or water the chances are its only a sensor. EGR valves do seem to have this problem. The last one I did was on a Corsa. Just drained out a bit of coolant, took it off and found it carboned up and stuck. Cleaned by careful scraping and with carb cleaner, checked the action and refitted with a new gasket, topped up the coolant and the light on the dash went out and stayed out to this day.
Baldbarbarian Posted 3 December, 2012 Author Posted 3 December, 2012 it needed a new crankshaft sensor, took it to vauxtech as just up the road from me. all fixed up and running a lot smoother now too.

SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 3 December, 2012 Posted 3 December, 2012 I have diagnostic tools, if anyone has a problem. Let me know.
Baldbarbarian Posted 3 December, 2012 Author Posted 3 December, 2012 £85 which was fine by me. I use the car a lot for work at the moment so happy with that.

egg Posted 3 December, 2012 Posted 3 December, 2012 £85 which was fine by me. I use the car a lot for work at the moment so happy with that. Seems a very good price for diagnosis, part and labour. Result.
Baldbarbarian Posted 3 December, 2012 Author Posted 3 December, 2012 Yeah exactly what I thought!, appreciate everyones input on this thread. Cheers guys. COYR!!
PhilippineSaint Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Does anybody remember when if a car went wrong you opened the bonnet had a tool kit handy and fixed it yourself with a piece of wire a bit of sticky tape and a lot of swearing.
Whitey Grandad Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Does anybody remember when if a car went wrong you opened the bonnet had a tool kit handy and fixed it yourself with a piece of wire a bit of sticky tape and a lot of swearing. Yes, but that was every week.
Handyman Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Try Pittstop in Shirley. £25 for diagnostics and very fair for repair costs. Fault could be anything tbh. Get the diagnosis and take it from there. Yes, Pittstop. When getting one of our cars mot'd I was told that it needed a new clutch. They didn't know that I was a mechanic of many years experience. Four hard years of driving later and it is now just beginning to show the need of a new one. Moral of the story? don't believe all that you are told. If you don't know about cars, get three opinions from unrelated sources.
PhilippineSaint Posted 9 December, 2012 Posted 9 December, 2012 Yes, but that was every week. do you have the biscuit tins with the extra nuts and bolts in as well
