The Big Screens - replays

Geniune question!

Are most of the "replays" that are supposedly played back on the big screen being cut short by advertising before they are actually shown?

Having a older member of the family with me today, he were hoping to watch a couple of replays of the 2nd half chances at the Northam end, yet the footage always seemed to interupted by adverts and then went back to the live feed.

Rather defeats the object.

At the Emirates, Arsenal seemed to show everything, regardless of whether it was controversal or not, and not a pop-up in sight!

At one point all you saw of one chance was the player's foot *about* to make contact with the ball...and then an advert for AAP3!

APP3 and the other companies do pay $$$$ to be shown a certain amount of times per game though, so that needs to be taken into account as well.

Indeed. Just a bit frustrating!

Perhaps Saints will in future offer big-screen advertising space for the "Gazza does his shoelaces up" slot!

I've always assumed that the replays had to be cut to prevent the referee from seeing them. For example, if he had looked up earlier to see Gaston being taken out in the box just after he had waved away the penalty, it would probably influence his decision the next time he had to make a big call.

The premier league handbook contains rules for clubs on use of screens. No "negative" incidents can be shown and there's other strange rules like not being able to shows a substitute who's preparing to come on.

I guess the club just cover all replays as a matter of course to make more cash from ads and/or reduce the risk of showing something they shouldn't.

I'd also heard the rule that controversial incidents were not to be replayed.

I didn't realy notice advertisments cutting in on replays yesterday. I did think the ads were frequently used when the screen showed a close up of either NA or Pardew on two or three occasions and wondered if that was deliberate (to prevent provoking a response).

I was told that anything controversial can not be shown as a result of the south Africa world cup and the referees watching replays to change decisions - and make the correct decision. Platini can't be having that now can he!

I think it goes back further than that. When I first heard about the ruling it was said that it was to prevent the possibility of crowd trouble. Nobody said anything about embarrassing the referee.

For boring clarity this is the relevant section from this years PL handbook:

Club’s ground shall not be used to relay to spectators closed circuit pictures of the

League Match at which they are present.

K.43. Any consent given under the provisions of the above Rule shall be subject to

the following conditions:

K.43.1. the screen shall be located so that it does not interfere with the League

Match at which it is used or distract the Players and Match Officials;

K.43.2. it shall be operated by a responsible person who is fully aware of the

conditions governing its use;

K.43.3. the screen may be used to show:

K.43.3.1. live action;

K.43.3.2. when the ball is not in play, action replays of positive incidents;

K.43.4. the screen shall not be used to show:

K.43.4.1. action replays of negative or controversial incidents;

K.43.4.2. any incident which may bring into question the judgment of a

Match Official;

K.43.4.3. the area of the trainer’s bench;

K.43.4.4. until substitute boards have been displayed, pictures of any

substitute Player warming up or preparing to enter the field

of play;

I seem to remember Tevez scoring against Mexico in the world cup when he was a clear yard offside. The lino missed it but a replay was shown on the big screen, which all the players and officials watched. However the ref wasn't allowed to change his decision based on a replay and the goal stood. The Mexicans went mental, it nearly started a riot.
