The ref is to blame for the penalties not being given and they weren't that clearcut, so I can forgive that.

The linesman were just plain awful. The two throw-ins Newcastle got at the end of the match because the ball supposedly touched Lallana were ridiculous and Rodriguez just wasn't offside.

But we won, so lets not put to much energy into the ref.

The officials were absolutely shocking. One of the worst performances I've seen for a while, from both the ref and the lino on the Kingsland side in the 2nd half.

Atkinson is a known plonker and was awful, absolutely dreadful. The linesman on the side opposite the dugout got everything wrong including two of the most blatant throw ins for us you'll ever see.

Just represents the shocking standard of officiating in this league. Cue the usual, 'it's such a difficult job' nonsense.

In the end the performance from the officials in that match was so poor it was almost comical. They were an entertainment in their own right.

Funny everyone knows who the "rubbish" referees are, as the best ones never get noticed.

Take MIke Dean, with his over dramatic hand gestures earlier this weekend at Sunderland, a prime demonstration of "Look at me" syndrome.

Atkinson was awful today, and I am not expecting an improvement from Clattenberg either on Wednesday (we've had him before this season somewhere!)

Did you think either of the potential pens, pens? My angle wasn't great. The second seemed more like Ramirez stumbling, but the if the first wasn't a pen it must gave been a dive.

The ref was unlucky with the foul by the skate bastard that he played advantage to, and he got quite a few decisions right, but when he got one wrong he evened it up straight away, which made him look poor. Linesman on my Kingsland side was terrible.

Ramirez was definitely fouled for the second, though the fact he gave up on the ball (when he probably still could have got to it) and appealed didn't work in his favour.

Who was red today as he and his linesmen were bloody crap. Worse this season.

Have to agree, ref's quite often get stick they do not deserve, today's ref though deserves everything that gets thrown at him and his assistants, total rubbish, some very poor decisions, I thought the last goal was good, but will see for sure on M.O.T.D tonight.

poor ref, hmmm

seems foul throws no longer an offense, lost count of the number of foul throws, and obviously an arm around a player isn't a foul either and perhaps obstruction has been dropped from the rules as well!

I thought he got them right!

It says a lot that folks are this p*ssed off when we won. The commentators even mentioned that a lot of decisions had gone against Saints.

I still can't make my mind up whether Atkinson is incompetent, biased or both, but every time he referees us we seem to get the shaft.

And I thought that standards were supposed to improve when the refs went full-time.

Having said that, given how Atkinson saw things we were lucky that Ramirez finished the game.

How many bookings in a game of no malice or dangerous tackles ?

That said, I think we are guilty of going down in the penalty area too easily, and with that reputation preceding us we are unlikely to get the 50:50's. We're not the mancs after all.

Linesman in front of me (itchen north) could only be described as a Newcastle fan, several of the mad throwins he wasn't even looking! He was making eye contact with the ref and not watching the game :x

Ref was just ineffective and stupid, Tiote should have been booked repeatedly as he was never getting to the ball in any of his tackles. No idea why Fonte was booked at all, the list goes on.

Only really matters when our goal difference is looked at, should have been at least 3 from Rodriguez's goal and 2 more from the Gaston penalties that should have been given (though he makes some theatrics for the first but doesn't get booked which is just as silly)

I think it stems from a mental attitude, prevalent in the Prem, that on the one side, we have a team I have reffed for several seasons and know - on the other side we have a promoted side. Promoted side should struggle. Therefore I will favour the established Premier League side whenever I am in doubt. See it all the time. Both Refs and Linos.

Just seen a tweet from Le Tiss ranting about one of the most inept refereeing displays he's seen for years

One,if not two, penalties not given

The linos were also shocking - several inexplicable throw in and corner (or not corner) decisions - and J Rods goal was clearly onside

All in all - thank God we won 2-0 or my week would have been ruined by three tw~~ats !

OK, OK, OK.... ref didn't have his best game for sure, those throw in decisions were laughable and he gave both teams some strange decisions for and against. He just had a poor game, he isn't biased as a few of you are suggesting!

Anyone notice Mike Dean last weekend vs QPR......?

Cue the usual, 'it's such a difficult job' nonsense.

It's not nonsense. Have a go and see for yourself.

and J Rods goal was clearly onside

Yes he was onside, that but that is the hardest possible onside decision to get correct. At EPL level that should be called correctly most of the time, but to state it is 'CLEARLY' onside is ridiculous!

The one good thing the Ref and his assistantants did today with their different view on the game was whip us up into a frenzy which translated to the team which whipped us up into even more of a frenzy our first goal had quite a bit of steam behind it.

You do wonder what goes through the officials heads when the crowd starts to get ugly at 50:50 decisions they have just made. The Kingsland lino who gave a corner to the Toon when a quarter of the stadium could see it was our goal kick must have been so thankful he was facing he pitch.

Refs in the Bundesliga have taken kickbacks. And in Serie A. Does anyone seriously think it doesn't happen in the English game, with the richest league in the world?

What really annoys me about referee decisions like this is that he tried to stay on his feet. Makes a mockery of the argument that players shouldn't go to ground. It's like the one in the first half where he got taken out right on the edge and the ref "played advantage" which was no bloody advantage at all!!

The refs meet bi-weekly, I understand, and it would be naive to assume that they haven't addressed the issue of diving by deciding that known or suspected divers will never get the benefit of any doubt.

Sometimes they go too far the other way, refusing fairly clear penalties.

TBF, leaving aside the fact that we might have suffered from it today, I hate diving so much that I have no problem with that.

Don't think he even signalled advantage. Looked like he shook his head 'no way'.

Although a better ref would of sent Ramirez off at some point it has to be said...he done a bit of a nasty challenge in the first half that the ref didnt see when he was losing his rag at getting no decisions.

Whos our next ref for the Canaries?

Mr Mark "sponsored by Clintons" Clattenburg making his refereeing return after the Chelsea debacle nearly ruined the whole of the rest of his life, a nice under the radar game to ease him back in with.

For the second of the two blatant throw-in mistakes I saw Adam ask the linesman why he gave the throw to Newcastle. The linesman pointed to Atkinson saying that he gave it.

Actually, for the first of those shockers he didn't flag either way until the ref signalled which way to go, too.

Bit of a bug bear for me this but I just feel that certainly the assistants and some refs just cannot keep up with the modern game - certainly with the Rodriguez offside the assistant was well behind the pace and made the decision on the diagonal and this was borne out by MOTD2. Seen that a few times this season - they cannot match a professional's pace.
