Saints 2 Newcastle 0 - Post Match Reactions

Very good performance, they didn't have a shot on goal in the first half and only had 2 real chances all match. We do need to thank Gazza there because his stop on Anita and on that header from Santon(?) where absolute class. The best thing about today apart from the cleansheet is the amount of chances we created, we should have had at least 4. That brings me to the negative, we need to take our chances better, today Newcastle were gash and didn't make us pay but on another day this becomes another Swansea.

I have no clue about the "Who picks the team" debate.......Now, though, I am seriously wondering and leaning towards the notion that NA has now been given what he needs and actually WAS being interfered with before to a degree that was harmful to the team.

Conspiracy tosh ..........

We're starting to see the benefits of a stable line-up and tactical approach - all over the pitch. The chemistry is really developing well now - at the back, in the middle and up front, which is crucial for our playing style. I love seeing Puncheon and Clyne going down the right with pace, and Shaw is gaining in confidence with every game, which will give us the same dimension going down the left. I really enjoyed watching Ramirez ghosting around today, knitting things together with lovely touches. Rickie does so many things well - his deft, little lay-offs are a joy to watch; I worried that he was losing his scoring touch by becoming too much of a build-up player, but he's crucial to how we play.

Offensively, our ability to keep playing in tight spaces is Top-8 standard or even better, while the central defensive quartet when we don't have the ball (Schneiderlin, Cork, Fonte and Yoshida) is actually starting to look very solid.

A brilliant result. 10/10's for several of the players today; there really wasn't a weak performance from any of them. I am hard-pressed to nominate the MOTM, because Puncheon, Ramirez, Clyne, Cork would have a good shout at it and others might be nominated where a case could be made for them too.

OK, being realistic, this was a great time to play Newcastle, when they had played in Europe a few days ago and also had some key players out injured or suspended. But when we had key players like Cork and Ramirez out injured, few accepted that as a valid excuse for us, so why should it count for them?

I believe that tactically Adkins out-thought Pardew today and the team out-fought them. Interesting to read the OPTA stats before the match that had Newcastle as the team which played the highest percentage of long balls. This has been a good tactic where they have two very fast and mobile strikers like Cisse and Ba to run onto a perfectly weighted long ball, but they were without the key players like Guttierez and Ben Arfa to supply them. A lot of their passing was very wayward and bread and butter for our midfield to mop-up and start counter-attacks. We also played a high line defensively which was highly effective.

We hit the post three times, had a couple of penalty shouts, had what looked like a decent goal from Rodrigues ruled out, so it could have been 5/6 goals. The referee was poor, but I can hardly remember a linesman quite as poor as the one on the right side line in the second half, where he awarded at least two throw-ins to them which were blatantly ours.

The support was pretty good and lovely to hear Nigel's name chanted so loudly by all sections of our fans.

Perhaps we have turned a corner and settled on a good team selection and formation that is balanced and effective. Our passing and movement these past three matches has been superb. Where Cortese had expected Saints to become a team playing football which would come to be known as "the Saints way", I believe that we are beginning to see glimpses of what that will look like. Playing as well as that, we would have given any team in the Premiership a game today.

Norwich and their style of play will be a good test of where we can be this season.

One really good sign for us is that we don't really have one standout "Whenever he plays well, we play well" player. The way our team is set-up involves everyone, and that makes us tougher to shut down.

Despite all the depression of the early days, all we really needed was some defensive solidity and an end to the habitual ball-watching and individual errors. Kudos to the coaching staff for the progress they have made.

These sort of performances have been building since the WBA game, in my opinion. In that game we went back to basics, and even though we lost, we had a new solidity and organization about us. We've carried that same method into the upcoming games after that and got our rewards.

As a team we are tighter, we are quicker off the mark, we read situations quicker and we're quicker to cover for other players. Generally it looks like the entire team have grown up.

A hell of a lot is down to us having Ramirez available though, the bloke is just unbelievably good. Amazed he's playing for us, we should be very, very grateful we get to see a player of his quality grace St Mary's....for us!

Also, obvious credit has to go to Cork. He see's and plays the easy ball, might sound plain and boring - but it keeps possession. He's also bloody good at reading the game, and has so much energy that it's transformed that defensive side of our midfield.

For the majority of the season our attacking play has been quality, that's the one area where the team has delivered this year - we just couldn't defend as a unit, we couldn't get the balance correct. We now seem to have cracked that, and we defend well in units and attack well in units - it was good to watch us today, a well drilled, disciplined and organized performance.

I think in a way we've been fortunate with the last 2 games, because we've faced 2 teams on their arses - but we've caught them off guard and battered both of them it has to be said. Wednesday will be a different proposition, Norwich have been playing well and have a new found defensive resolve about them as well. Obviously it's a game we need to be winning, but it can't be taken for granted.

This month was a huge month for us, and it has to be said - we've delivered.

The linesman unfortunately was in Southampton and got it right. It wasn't a goal. Much as I would have liked to have seen it given.

Well we shall see from the tv replays won't we. I would suggest they are probably more accurate than your eyes. Unfortunately I was not in line so didn't really have an opinion.

From the BBC Report

"Forward pair Rickie Lambert and LALLANA, two players Pardew had SIGNED for Southampton, and playmaker Ramirez were the inspiration for the home side's win. "

What a bunch of muppets!

Ha he was claiming that himself in the sun yesterday (assuming they weren't misrepresenting him which admittedly is a sizeable if).

Anyway, get the feck in saints, it looks like things could be coming together now, with the return of Cork and introduction of Shaw giving us a solidity that looked totally beyond us 3 weeks ago. To be saying that about a 17 year old I think means we've got one hell of a player on our hands.

Saints start winning now we are playing poor teams shocker...

This is what we need before we start to play the good sides again, some confidence-building results!

Agree completely, playing 9 out of the top 10 in your first 11 games has to be one of the toughest starts ever! We've now taken 9 points from 12 against sides in the bottom half, Adkins deserves credit for working on the back line and showing faith in Gazza and Shaw and the back. No doubt Jack Cork is having a big influence, sitting in front of the back 4 and I am concerned that we don't have any cover for him but confidence must be pretty high after back to back wins.

It depends on the extent of interference, but if there was any I don't believe the chairman's office was the right place to look.

Great result

Alternatively its not too illogical to simply assume its taken 10 games or so for NIge and the lads to start settling down after a very difficult start. the performances against City, Man U etc showed we had some quality, but paniced at the wrong time... and its then easy for losing to become a habit... which seems to be a more realistic 'speculation' than all the conspiracy theories...

We have also played two sides that were woeful which is great for our confidence - the tests will come when we play sides firing on all cylinders - or will any defeat from now on be a sign of NC and Reed interfering again....?

Too many good performances, however special mention for our teenage left back, a serious player in the making!

What a dominant performance. Newcastle were schooled.

He's in the JWP category of looking a hell of a lot older than he actually is - has a bright head on the guy, reads the game well, quick off the mark and defends very well. Very rarely did a player get the wrong side of him. He'll have tougher tests than the last few games, that's for sure, but for a 17 year old lad he's got a bright future.

Have they edited it now? I'm reading: "...and forward Rickie Lambert, who was signed by Pardew for Southampton." Correct, just poor order of wording.

Generally, I think BBC reports are usually class compared to many others.

I thought it was onside from the Kingsland.

Still, no matter. We totally dominated that game and I loved every minute of it, especially the fact 3 players we've had since League 1 were ripping a Premier League team apart with a bit of help from Ramirez who just oozes class. What a player he is and he'll only get better.

Was Pardew giving us a wave at the end or throwing his arm up in frustration at yet another poor decision from the officials? They were woeful.

It was really close tho. I ain't gonna be really sure till they do one of those things on MOTD with the red line.

One thing we can be sure... cracking finish from JR!

We were yelling at Puncheon to release the ball but he delayed for a few yards which allowed Rodriguez to run offside. I'm happy with the linesmans decision which is real time.

Yeah Derry, punch was late releasing the pass, even from Birmingham you could see JR doing that pigeon step thing trying to stay on. Fine margins!

So you are changing what you say now. Before he was offside and there was no debate. Now the linesman's decision was correct in real time. Which is it? Methinks you have seen the replay yourself and are issuing a hasty retraction as you have made yourself look a little foolish...

you are wrong...just saying, when the ball was played, rodriguez was level...when the picture is frozen in the replay, you can see it..regardless what you saw at the game..the goal should have stood

I'm going to check when I get home and lol if it shows onside. He was a semi professional manager you know...

You really need to grow up. You whine like an adolescent schoolgirl at the merest sniff of what you perceive to be an insult or a personal remark, and then you post this kind of sarcastic sh*t when someone voices an opinion you don't agree with.

FFS even when we win we have to read this kind of crap.

He's not wrong. Even when he suggests putting a defender in midfield it isn't wrong. He's an ex semi pro manager you know and it's the troglodytes on here who fail to appreciate the subtleties of management that are in the wrong. I expected better from you tdd.

Well, that was a great game - top notch from Saints. FWIW, the goal should have stood as he was onside. No weak areas at all, and fair play to Gazza for that brilliant save from the header. Puncheon MOM for me, followed by Ramirez. Wednesday will be a test of character, but we can turn Norwich over. The crowd sounded fantastic over the Arabic commentary too. FYI, the Arabic commentators seem to love Gazza and Ramirez. They get really over-excited by those 2. For those who say Newcastle were rubbish, get a grip. Saints were simply superb. Well done Nigel and the lads.

Puncheon delayed the pass and he was offside Mike, right opposite so I could see.

Also - what happened about the directive to give forwards the benefit of the doubt? Not just us tho - Liverpool also robbed (not that I care about them)
