SaintWill71 Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 With United unveiling one of Fergie today I was instantly reminded of the 'journey' to creating our one of Ted Bates. Anyone know what happened the first attempt? Did Mandaric end up with it as a self portrait statue? Amazing how someone got it so wrong before someone got it so so right, it's now one of the best I have seen.

Wes Tender Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 I'm anticipating the one of Ferguson to feature one of his trademark postures. It will either be of him pointedly looking at his watch, or poised for the verbal assault on his players, teacup in hand, apoplectic rage registering on his face. Barry Sanchez Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 It does make me chuckle, the angle of the wrist holding the ball, the massive head, the cheap or cheap looking ill fitting suit, the bricklayer hands, the pea sized football. That Ian Brennan well what was he thinking?
ART Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 Read a statue of Pope John Paul II is to have it's head redone after appearing more like Mussolini than John Paul II. One wonders whether the artists don't do such things deliberately. With Christmas fast approaching everytime I see a Santa I am reminded of the true Saints Santa, Markus Liebbherr and give thanks for his generosity and warm heart. saint_sinner Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 I heard that Leon Crouch replaced the offending statue with the new one and paid for it with his own money Fair play if true as the money for the original statue was raised by the fans or at least half of it was. I cant beleive that there was no refund on the original!

Barry Sanchez Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 Akin to a bricky taking on the Sistine Chapel? http://www.bbc.co.uk/hampshire/content/articles/2007/03/20/ted_bates_statue_feature.shtml Jesus on the cross in the background looks alright, maybe we should of had that with a couple of Saints praying instead. Dr. Kucho Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 Whoever did the current one should also do the next statue, coming to the question: Which Saints legend should be next to have a statue? Lawrie Mac? MLT?
old_southy Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 MLT is not going to have one for quite a few years, but the club should think about ways of honoring him in the future.
Miltonaggro Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 I would like to see one for each stand, and it would have to be Marcus and Le Tissier, with perhaps Micky Channon giving it the windmill. Just don't let Brennan near it...

Not on Cortese's watch! Marcus would be a fitting tribute. I fondly remember the day of the JPT final I spoke to Marcus in the Royal box about the last couple of matches and the results around our matches and what it meant for our promotion prospects and he didn't have the first clue what I was talking about. Nice man though and his missus was really classy

Dellman Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 The first Ted statue was hilarious in one way and an acute embarrassment in another, what beats me is how it ever got to the point of being accepted and unveiled.
