dronskisaint Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 ??? You made a disparaging comment about red brick universities andI thought - perhaps he went to Oxbridge and was super snobby about former Polytechnics but then I looked at some of the spelling, alliteration, grammar etc and deduced that you didn't get in to university and were maybe bitter about that The rest was just pointing out where he got his degrees and that as I'd not set eyes on the University of Salford I had no idea how or from what it was constructed. Also my inclination was to say skate on the wind-up...what does that tell you about your posting style? Happy to help!
Greenridge Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 Adkins clearly felt Fox was not up to the job hence our pursuit of a replacement LB. It would seem a joint effort between Adkins and Les Reeds team to identify targets and for NC to seal the deal so I'm not clear as to why you are pointing the finger at Adkins. Start us off with something with a bit more depth than just finding Adkin's bookish chirpiness annoying, suggesting and then retracting the opinion that from time to time he ought to name and shame players who do not perform well and admit when we are sh*te. You could also expound your views on whether his academic background is of any value as a football club manager, or whether it ought to have been obtained at a Red-brick University or an old establishment Uni. I think you seem to think I am refering to polytechnics? No, the Red-brick Universities are a distinctly more recent establishment compared to the old/ancient universities. Perhaps because I'm probably a lot older than you, we have a different perspective of what is old or not. The Polytechnics tend to be known as plate-glass universities if I'm not mistaken. Dangermouth Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 Yep. Red-brick were those unis established after the big, few established ones and existed before polytechnics. As for English teachers - they can't spell either, not if they're in Ipswich anyway: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/northgate-high-school-in-ipswich-hires-1448554 Maybe we should just close down all of them and send the kids out to roam the streets and annoy people (in Ipswich)? Miltonaggro Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 I think that the academic qualifications achieved by Nigel were to ensure a familial income inside or outside of football management (as a physiotherapist or in the sports science arena), and for that he should be proud. Not sure that these qualifications have any bearing on his chances of being successful as a top flight manager but it would appear to be unlikely, given the evidence provided by the current incumbents throughout elite sport / elite sport management, let alone football. What it probably does give him is a perspective on the difficulty of life outside the football bubble, and how hard kids have to work over three years at any university to get any degree. My only experience of Salford University alumus was spending a short period many years ago working at the Houses of Parliament alongside a mature student from that institution (on what now would be called an internship, then work experience), an unreformed hippy, who made Neil from the Young Ones look like Roger Moore (voiced by Steve Coogan), he used to ride between Manchester and London at weekends on a motorcyle combination in all weathers and was a malodourous nutcase - to his credit he was a City fan and they were sh*te at the time. I also know that Salford is ranked about 100 out of around 115 UK Universities after a bit of trawling a couple of years ago after being tipped off that an ex tutor of mine had been removed as a Professor at Salford after not stopping doing what he had been doing when I was being tutored by him... I come onto a forum for lively debate and discussion not to be told how to spell ha ha, that says an awful lot more about the person and to the degree they will go to grab some kind of superiority over the debate, as for red brick spell it how you wish I always thought it was simply red brick, you could spell it redd brik and I would not be arsed to be honest. Dangermouth Posted 23 November, 2012 Share Posted 23 November, 2012 "Red Brick", "Red-brick", n'importe quoi. If anyone thinks I was 'having a go' at them, then they're wrong. I was simply pointing out that as far as I was aware, the RB (does that suffice?) uni preceded the poly and that for those who said that the people who were concerned with correcting poor English should go and teach, this (i.e. teaching) wasn't necessarily an indicator of competence. It was, of course, slightly tongue in cheek. Let's face it, many of the poorer English speakers/writers are now the English themselves but it is futile (and not a little annoying) to simply seek to correct people ad nauseum, particularly when there is not going to be a change in the behaviour of the individual. On a related but separate note (vis a vis the English language) compare Roberto di Matteo's use of English with say, Mancini, Zola and especially that bloke who managed England. He has a very good vocabulary range and speaks well, albeit occasionally haltingly (but probably because he is choosing his words). Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't deliberately choose a sh!t team to play at Juve because he felt the axe was about to fall anyway.
