dubai_phil Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 We always do it just before the Rugby 7's down here (2nd Dec) just to annoy mates visiting for the beer up & last minute sun before Xmas? What about you lot? I noticed Selfridges had theirs up 3 weeks ago & Galleria in Munich were full on with Trees and bonking rabbits at the weekend (well, that's what it looked like after a trip to Augustiner) Are you Traditional with a fairy on top or are you all PC these days like Bearsy with a Butt Plug on top? alpine_saint Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 24th. My missus has this thing about the "Christkind" bringing it. 23rd if she is knackered or in a bad mood (if I do it all myself). I try to point out the sheer ridiculousness of a baby delivering Xmas presents around the world, she argues its the same for an old man. I counter that at least he still has his driving licence if he passed the medical, at which point she goes quiet.
The Cat Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 Normally the weekend before Xmas, don't want to peak too early. Then I put presents under it straight away to tease the kids.
pap Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 1st December. Normally down 2nd Jan.
ericofarabia Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 I thought it should Traditionally be Up 12 days before Xmas and Down 12 days after Xmas. I hate it how empty the house looks after the tree, lights and decorations are taken down, so invariably stray way past the take down date!! hutch Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 Is it true that some of our first team are still sending notes to Santa up the chimney this year?
Jez Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 New house, new massive Christmas tree bought in the sales in January, so its going up 1st December - especially as its a Saturday. Got Home Alone recorded to watch whilst doing it, along with sackfuls of alcohol.
Hamilton Saint Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 Our tradition is to go out as a family to a local Christmas Tree "farm" about two weeks before Christmas and cut our own tree down - about 6-7 feet high. When I was a kid growing up in Hythe my parents always put up all the Christmas decorations (including the tree) on Christmas Eve. And then took them down on Twelfth Night (Epiphany). Minsk Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 'Live' trees don't usually go on sale here until 23rd/24th Dec, as they are primarily for New Year (indeed, they are called New Year Trees) and Christmas here is 2 weeks later than the one celebrated in the UK. So, most years since I have been here, the tree has gone up on 23/24 Dec. However, last year I decided to get a plastic one so it went up 2 weeks before Christmas - just as I used to do when living in England. As for this year...... I am off to Moscow this weekend and my wife is threatening to put the tree up while I am away. Personally, seeing as it never comes down until the middle of January (after we celebrate 'Old New Year' on the 13th) I would rather wait a couple more weeks. But, if it makes her happy...............

Spudders Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 I'm a grumpy single bloke that hates christmas, as such trees are surplus to requirement in my household!
SNSUN Posted 20 November, 2012 Share Posted 20 November, 2012 Traditionally they're supposed to go up 12 days before and come down 12 days afterwards, but I'd rather not have Christmas lingering around too long after Christmas Day, so generally the decs come down very early January. We both love Christmas though, so putting them up is 'earlier the better'. Not before December though, that'd be too early. Somewhere in the first couple of weeks of December will do. My parent's house is a different kettle of fish. My mum faces the annual struggle to get the house tidy for the family Christmas, and the decs are usually the last thing on her list of things to do. That usually means the weekend before Christmas, if she's lucky. I've also noticed much fewer decs get put up these days. Apathy or laziness perhaps.
