doddisalegend Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 .....Jason Puncheon now? Many lines of forum text expended on JP over the last couple of years a lot of it pretty critical but this season he has been doing pretty well and was IMO outstanding against QPR. So have people forgiven him now? is he still a lazy talentess **** or have people changed their opinions of him? Thought this was a nice article about JP...sounds like he has become a real team player http://www.sportinglife.com/football/premier-league/news/article/312/8257111/puncheon-thats-the-real-saints
pingwing Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Still annoys me, had a good performance against QPR and United but was frustratingly poor against teams that can defend/can clearly see he's only ever going to be effective on his left foot. At least he's not busy annoying everyone at the club any more and deserves credit for getting somethings right, just isn't going to be a consistent premier league RM. Dr Who? Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Up for it against QPR when he had an axe to grind with them, but needs more consistency. I think he will have something to prove on Sunday when up against the manager who signed him.
The9 Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 My opinion on Puncheon is that it is a shame that he only show glimpses of his potential ability when he has a tangible point to prove and puts in the effort, and it's usually as a result of something negative, in this case QPR's failure to pick him in the Premier League when he was on loan to them a year or so back. It does make you question both his motivation and suitability for our squad generally, given his previous and our long-standing refusal to sign players with the wrong attitude. Maybe Nige should spend all week telling him he's crap and getting dropped ?
Greenridge Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 His consistency - or apparent lack of - is what let's him down (IMO) but by all accounts and from the highlights I saw of the weekend game he looked fantastic. Kevin Pietersen would be impressed with his 'reintegration'. Long may it continue, he seems one of those players that needs an arm around him from the Manager to get the best out of him. fanimal Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 I think he still has alot to do to earn the 'collective respect' of most Saints fans, me included. But credit to the guy he has clearly worked hard in the background.

The9 Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Lol. Maybe Nigel has tried both - I wonder which one it was that worked?! I actually think you're right that Puncheon needs an arm around and support, because he seems like the high maintenance type who needs reminding that he's got the ability - but also that his best (only?) performances come when he's highly motivated and that's usually because of a perceived slight. He's always good on loan at places (when picked) because he's sticking it to the loaning club, and on returning to his parent club for a couple of games - because he's proving the point that he shouldn't have been sent away. He's not really been able to maintain that kind of form in the routine matches though. At least publicly his attitude to not starting has been much better - maybe he's since realised that being left out for a 17-year old England international who was sold for £15m and rapidly scored in the Champions' League wasn't such an insult in the first place ? The Kraken Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 I'm still unconvinced by Puncheon. Too hit and miss, and too predictable in being extremely left footed and cutting inside 99% of the time. Plus his inclusion with Lallana on the other side of midfield sees us with very little natural pace in the side, which means we can't stretch play as much as we could and have the option of the ball over the top or our striker/winger getting in behind the defence, which limits our attacking options. I'd still prefer Mayuka to be developed there and given some decent game time (for lack of a better alternative option). Can't argue with his performance on Saturday, though. This Charming Man Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Been very impressed with his attitude and determination since he's been given another chance and has been one of our better players this season. I met him in Switzerland after a pre-season game and he spent quite a while chatting with us, even went on the team bus to put his things on there, then came back off for another chat. Wes Tender Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Having been a critic of his attitude in the past, I'm very happy to say that he gives the appearance of having had a good look at himself and his performances have improved immeasurably. To a certain extent though, even when he had several good chances against QPR, he does often fail to hit the target, but he certainly wasn't afraid to pull the trigger and had his conversion rate been better, then he would be fit into any Premiership team. His performance against QPR was certainly the most effective I've seen from him and on MOTD the impression was given that he was involved with everything we did which wasn't strictly true, but his contribution was certainly important to our victory. If he can keep that up, then his rejuvenation will be complete. It would be nice to believe that Adkins has played a large part in this. He is a manager with a good understanding of how to handle the psychological aspects of what makes players tick and I get the impression that Puncheon may have had a big ego when he came to us and perhaps thought that he was too good to play for us when we were in the lower divisions. Whatever he thought, it was clear that his previous track record of promising much and delivering little at several clubs, meant that his best chance was to buckle down here and reinvent himself to prove that his early promise could be fulfilled. Our return to the Premiership allowed him to show what he is capable of on the biggest stage, having already shown glimpses of his ability when with Blackpool. For all the talk of him having been a big time Charlie, he appears to be popular with his team mates and generally puts in a good shift effort wise, traits that will gradually win over the doubters. ant Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 He admitted that he had an attitude problem, which was a big step. When Punch showed a determination to make it work here and the club welcomed him back into the fold that was good enough for me in terms of reassessing him from that point onwards. Of course everybody has their own opinions and observations but what I've seen since then is a lad that's fully integrated into the team and works bloody hard as a part of it. His tracking back in particular has improved immeasurably and there's a strong understanding developing with Clyne. At the level of player we're likely to be able to sign, who isn't going to be predictable at times?! Beating his man will likely never be his strongest attribute but it's not the only method of attack. I'd say his most 'predictable' method in the PL has been cutting in along the box and shooting across goal, from which we've had 2 excellent strikes and a decent number of near misses already. Although it crossed my mind that he may have simply been turning it on against QPR it seems a bit of an injustice to suggest it was merely borne of a personal grudge. He's been a handful in plenty of matches where that wasn't the case and quite simply looks like he wants to be here. Perhaps he hasn't changed his spots and it'll all come crashing down again in 6 months time but for now I believe he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Something clicked in the Summer so let's make best use of it while we can.
max_saints Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 think we need to hire some extras and plant them among the opposition fans every game and boo him at every touch. that will force him to feel like he has something to prove every game and get him to score to 'silence the opposition fans' every game. sounds like a plan? Noodles34 Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 put this on the other thread (why did that start an hour after this one?) one or two good games this season... did you see that analysis from WBA's Steven Reid on MOTD2 - "he's been sensational this season", I mean where do they get this crap from? I voted him MOM on Saturday, but the bloke is still an arroagnt cretin who believes in own hype.

Bailey Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Consistency is the key with Punch. He needed no motivation for the game at Loftus Road on Saturday - he was at QPR on loan, didn't feature much and had a point to prove. Point well made. We need to see how he fares over the duration of the season. I certainly wouldn't be against giving him a one or two year extension (assuming he wants to sign), but I'd like to see him turn in those kinds of performances that we saw last weekend on a more regular basis. Great performance Saturday, great performance against Man Utd, not much at all in the other 8 games. If we some more consistency out of him then he'll prove the doubters (including myself) wrong but at the moment the jury is still out.
the stain Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 I was in the camp of not wanting him back after his sulking and attitude. However, I am glad that we have him as he offers us more options and when he's on form he's clearly a premiership player. Like everyone else has said, he needs to do it more consistently, but then it was never talent that I had an issue with, it was his attitude. I really don't think that he's changed completely and I'm sure his foolishness with be displayed again at some point, but for now, he's doing alright. DT Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Thought he was excellent. Really hope it wasn't just a 'playing against old team and wanted to make a statement' motivation or, even worse, 'transfer window opens soon' performance. Either way, hope he continues to run at people. We had much more zip and resolve. Adkins should take them away more often.
Saint 76er Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Should other clubs come sniffing, what sort of value do you think we could ask for Punch now, assuming we would sell? Back in the summer we couldn't give him away and most on here would have grabbed 500k if it was forthcoming. Now, he has been MoM in the PL and is a regular and probably important first team player. That is a status level in the PL that would probably bring in, say, 4-6 million. Players that have established they can play well at that level don't often fetch much less in this day and age. Quite a premium in a few short months should someone want him and should the club want to sell ...
a1ex2001 Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 I really rate his attitude and the turn around he has managed a the club, not many people go from training on your own to full integration back into the team. I also think it's a bit harsh to blast him for his consistency, there are very few wingers that are consistently good week in week out as it is a very difficult position to really influence the game from those that can like Overmars, Pires and Giggs land u at the very top of the tree! Sour Mash Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Couple of very good performances this season aren't enough to paper over several years of a pretty indifferent career. Chez Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 I suggested we sign him having seen him play for Barnet, backed him when most of the forum seemed to be slating him and continue to see what he does well rather than focus on what he can't. So for me nothing has changed after Saturday. He's not a world beater by any means, but the ball retention he offers if vital at this level.
