Adkins' VS Pardew's signings

Due to our 'evolution not revolution' transfer policy, I think a lot of people still think of our team as being built by Pardew and taken to another level by Adkins. In fact, Adkins' ability to pick and attract the best players is often thought of as inferior to Pardew's. However, on closer inspection, it is perhaps surprising to look at our team and see who was signed by who. Looking at our match day squad from Saturday, i was certainly surprised to see how many were Adkins signings:

12 Gazzaniga Adkins

02 Clyne Adkins

03 Yoshida Adkins

06 Fonte Pardew

23 Shaw Academy

04 Schneiderlin Already here

10 Ramirez Adkins

18 Cork Adkins

20 Lallana Academy

42 Puncheon Pardew

07 Lambert Pardew

01 K Davis Already here

05 Hooiveld Adkins

13 Fox Adkins

08 S Davis Adkins

16 Ward-Prowse Academy

09 Rodriguez Adkins

24 Mayuka Adkins

Nevertheless, arguably our two best attackers of the game were signed by Pardew...

Whose signings do you feel have been the best over the last 4 years?

Pardew pretty much signed the spine of the team. Hammond, Fonte, Lambert. Those 3 were pivotal to where we are now, so you have to appreciate his picks there.

But he also signed a few duds! Dickson, Seaborne and Mellis spring to mind.

Adkins has done a fine job evolving the team around the spine though.

Adkins signings have been very hit and miss. For ever + there is a -

De ridder

Forte

N'Guessan

Guly

Fox

Falque

Lee?

Falque was only signed as a stop gap as Lallana was injured, but not as bad as the club first thought - so he wasn't actually needed in the end. N'Guessan was a similar signing iirc.

Trotman and mellis were not really any good

Forte was a complete waste of time. But then, his goals against MK Dons were worth the money.

De ridder is poo

Chaplow was great value really. Fox did a good job last year

Cork is excellent... Hammond was also good

Too early to judge this summers signings

To silly to compare IMO

Very few of the signings have been terrible. Pards seems to have had a better hit rate mind, but at the time pretty much anyone we signed would have improved the team, some were much more important then others though. His foundations were critical and Adkins has built on them well

Just how many of those players were actually signed by Adkins and Pardew though?

Pardew will have been influential in signing most if not all of his signings; Les Reed arrived at the aclub well after most of Pardew's signings were made. You'd suggest that Guly was the first signing that came by way of committee rather than the manager. How many since have been manager/transfer committee, who knows.

The Papa Waigo transfer was a bit out there though.... I would doubt that was solely on Pardew's recommendation.

Guly was not an Adkins signing, he was signed towards the end of the transfer window when Pardew was still here and was on the bench for Pardews last game, away at Bristol Rovers. Rumour has it, Guly being signed without Pardews knowledge was another cause of a fallout with Cortese, just saying like.

He was on loan while Pardew was here, signed permanently after NA took over!

Interesting that neither manager seemed to want him or rate him..... Glad NC and NA had succesful "showdown" talks last week, i know 100% that Guly was nearly top of that discussion

Pardew done some great signings, but it's probably easier to find players good enough for League 1, especially when you've got a bigger budget than everyone else.

Many though went on to be mainstays in the Championship and 3 (or 4, if you include Frazer) are regular starters in the Prem, which when you add Lallana and Morgan (along with KD) who were already here is a decent percentage.

I think it's hard to compare the most likely side to get promoted from league one and a favourite for relegation from the premier league. Pardew assembled a top half championship side in league one and did it very well. But Adkins added necessary grit to the class, with chaplow, cork, Hooidveld etc. What I do look at is the side that Pardew assembled at Newcastle and what Adkins has done at saints and there is no comparison. Yet how much of that is down to Newcastle exceptional scouting network? All I do know is that I would rather watch a Nigel Adkins side than a pardew side.

He seemed to have a lot to say about his signing at the time.

But maybe Pards was just a Cortese yes man as well.

Can't see much there that suggests he was a target identified by Pardew, to be fair. Was it leftback on here (who clearly had direct links to the club) who claimed that the initial loan was just a ruse, and that Guly had been guaranteed a contract? In any case, Guly was signed permanantly by NA.

Interesting he says 'We'd like to think' 'we're confident he'll make th switch' and 'we're taking a risk' and not 'I feel' like he did when we signed Lambert

Clearly a 'committee' signing.
