Newcastle boss Alan Pardew impressed with progress of former club Southampton

Alan Pardew is glad that Southampton have gone from strength to strength since he departed the club.

The Newcastle manager spent an eventful 13-month spell in charge at St Mary's before being sacked in August 2010 and he returns to St Mary's with the Magpies on Sunday.

Pardew dragged Saints to the brink of promotion, despite a 10-point deduction, and Nigel Adkins continued the good work by leading the club to back-to-back promotions.

The 51-year-old is impressed with the team's progress and feels striker Rickie Lambert can make a big impact in the top flight.

"I enjoyed my time there and I am looking forward to going back," he said. "There will be some memories because we won a trophy when I was there and we were minus 10 points and we built a side.

"It will be interesting to meet a few of the people there who I had great relationships with. There are some great players there who have done phenomenally well.

"Rickie Lambert, who I took to the club, I am so proud of him. I always said he could be a Premier League player and he is proving it.

"[Adam] Lallana and [Jose] Fonte, people like that, and Kelvin [Davis], it will be nice to see those guys who are still in and around the team.

"They have made the transition well. They have acquitted themselves very well and are unlucky not to have won against the Manchester clubs on both occasions."

When asked about Lambert, he said: "I signed him at 28 from Bristol Rovers. Plenty had talked about him, but no-one went for him.

"I paid £1million for him and I said I thought he could take us to the Premier League, and he has proved me right, so I am pleased about that."

Errrr. After Strachan, Chris Nichol is arguably the most successful Saints manager of recent times - finishing 7th in the top league. He was a victim of his own success really and we played quality football under him, although not great defensively! If he ever came to the club in any capacity, he should get a f**king good reception - no question.

As for Sturrock, really? He undid all of Strachan's hard work - particularly with fitness work with the players. He's massively to blame for our relegation, more than Redknapp.

As for Pardew. No abuse, no praise.

Pardew deserves no abuse at all. To say, 'no praise' is a bit harsh. He gave us a great day out at Wembley and our first trophy for over 30 years!

To try and play down what he did here is really silly.....

People need to go back in time and remember exactly where we were just a week before kick off that season. We had a total shell of a club, no staff, awful players who did terrible in the championship the season before, players on the verge of leaving. He stopped both Lallana and Davis leaving. He then brought in the backroom staff and playing staff that got the club moving forwards. He brought in guys like Lambert, Fonte, Puncheon etc and they are all still doing a job for us now. We had our first day out at the new Wembley and won our first cup for nearly 30 years. Sure we didn't start the second season very well but I think we still would of cruised the league in the end. The problem is league one is a lot more difficult then some give it credit. Even Adkins said we would win it but didn't. If he now left would people say he did crap because we only finished 2nd?

I will give him an applause prior to kick off but then after that hope we stuff his side 5-0....

we really didn't...... saints fan in overhyped expecatations shocker

How didn't we underachieve when you consider how much he spent compared to other League One clubs? Seem to remember Cortese saying on Radio Solent that he was disappointed by the league campaign as well....

£4m on players is huge money in League One.

Do you go to Swindon away that first season? I honestly thought there we would struggle to stay up, we were dire. He had to build a team during the season and install confidence in the players that were good enough but had been used to getting a hiding every week. Should we have made the play offs? Possibly, but we didn't underachieve, most of the £4m wasn't spent until January anyway so only really that team for half a season during which we were always playing catch up.

Did well for us, and brilliant for Newcastle, but if he does not turn around results soon, he will be out of work again!

His own success last season could bit him in the bum.

In the mad world of premiership football, nothing would surprise me. I wonder how much it would cost Ashley to buy off an 8 year contract.

The last time I saw the bloke was there was a mutual applause being shared as we had just won 4-0 away from home, was a shock what transpired the following Monday. He deserves at least a round of applause for what he achieved here, perhaps the fair weather fans that didn't bother to come and watch games in L1 have a different viewpoint.

Granted we could have achieved more that season but we were still recovering from turmoil at the start of the season, like NC has always said if the Pinnacle farce hadn't delayed the takeover by ML for a month we could have had a squad fit and prepared to hit the ground running. If those first 10 games had been like those when we finally found our form we'd have been promoted a season earlier easily.

He helped install a winning mentality into the team, signed some key players that got us out of League 1 and some of those played a key role in promotion from the Championship, espically RL without whom i dread to think where we'd be. He also deserves credit for revieving the fortunes of Adam Lallana, as i seem to recall he was ready to leave following the dutch duo debacle. That lad is now our captain FFS. That first season in L1 was one of the most enjoyable to be a saints fan for years, as we were regularly winning games comfortably home and away, not to mention the trip to Wembley, regardless of it being a tin point trophy.

Basically anyone who thinks its acceptable to boo the bloke after the foundations he helped lay is nothing short of an imbecile.

Saves me posting!

It amazes me, pardew under pressure from the Newcastle fans, and Martin o'neil under pressure..... Crazy is the world of football.

Raffer under pressure before the first game gets under way. I think football is nut.

We could have sacked Adkins after losing to WBA, and we would be saying how great the new manager Isuzu doing at the club!

And if wasn't for the cross-bar, the posts and a blind referee and linesman we would have done ;)

If I was at the game I would give Pards massive support especially to wind the little Italian ****.
why??? he is guiding the club to better things. he is worth more than the rest of the goons we have had at the club in the past 20 years. Ok he may seem cold but if he puts the structure in place to guarantee a bright future then he should be supported. The saints foundation is another massive good thing the club does

"polite, bordering on warm", according to the BBC.

Probably a fair assessment, it was by no means a rousing reception - nowhere near the WGS applause - but fairly short, many parts of the ground were probably not aware he had come out.

Brought home to me the difference again from The Dell where not just opposing managers would walk the touchline and receive the warm reception or a walk of torrid abuse.

Pardew did well for us, but glad things worked out how we did. Adkins has brought in a whole new philosophy to the club. As good a job that Pardew has done at Newcastle, he's never had a plan B.

I was reading their forum yesterday and to a man they appear to want Pardew out. This despite them having just had one of their best seasons since KK. Football fans are fickle. I guess it's no different anywhere, certainly not on here where the likes of Lallana can go from a Championship level player being found out in the Prem to potential England star within a couple of weeks. As always, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
