Fitzhugh Fella Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 I am assuming it is going to be positive (and so it should be, despite the fact he crossed swords with Cortese and subsequently took a bullet). However what ex-managers, still (potentially) involved in football would not get a warm welcome? Obviously Redknapp and Hoddle and I guess Burley would hardly get the Northam singing their praises but I think David Jones, Dave Merrington, Stuart Gray, Gordon Strachan, Paul Sturrock, Graeme Souness, Nigel Pearson and Steve Wigley would. Ian Branfoot? No probably he would get booed should he ever show his face and I guess the red carpet would not be laid out for Jan Poorvilet and Mark Wotte. Lawrie Mac? Actually I don't think I would go there, for he is a man who polarises like no other in our history. Personally I think his pluses just outweigh his negatives and his legacy of 76 at Wembley deserves respect. And let's not forget his successor, Chris Nicholl - a popular guy but a negative manager (according to Channon). So are you going to welcome Pardew, despite the fact he fell foul of NC? Katalinic Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 I can think of no reason why AP would not get a good reception - started us off on the journey to the Prem and gave us a great day out at Wembley - a real watershed moment even if it was "just" the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. After some pretty bad times he instilled some positivity back into the club. Anyone that boos Pardew is an idiot.
Badger Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 I think warm aplause is in order, he did change us from a losing mentality, and signed several players who were instrumental in our rise to the premiership.

The Cat Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 Some mongs will boo him, and if we are winning we'll get the "Pardew, what's the score" chants. I'm pretty amiguous towards him on the whole. He signed some good players and helped us get to the JPT final and have a fantastic day at Wembley. But on the flip side we played some awful games under him (Swindon away 1-0 loss stands out) and for some reason I've never thought of him as a likeable person. I certainly wouldn't ever consider booing him though.

toofarnorth Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 IMO chanting his name wouldn't just be cringey but a downright insult to Adkins. Should be applauded and leave it at that.

dronskisaint Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 Pardew is welcome - we owe him a lot for the foundations he put down and the day out at Wembley. The only manager I feel real animosity to is Redcrap...I can take his lack of ability to keep us up..just, I can take where he came from and then returned to - if I try really hard but what I can't take is him saying 'is 'Eart was never in the job' - the clunt took the money and I'll despise him for ever for that. Most of the short-termers were out of their depth but Lawrie's a legend, I liked the Nicholl era enormously, Dave Jones was desperately unlucky, Pearson also for different reasons. Whispering Dave is welcomed every week, wee Gordon whenever he wants will be welcome. Hoddle I could sort of understand but he lost so many people's respect..mine included. The Dutch pair did their best... So I'd probably not clap...Gray, Wigley, Sturrock, Burley and Branfoot...nor Gorman, Basset and Wise... Doddsy's a legend and still very much a Saint so is assured of a rapturous reception...Bally, Ted still get clapped just with a mention! Have I missed many..we seemed to have manager for a month compretition in the Lowe era?

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 Warm welcome definitely (except maybe from Nicola?). Gave me my 1st chance to see us win at Wembley (only 2 when we won the FA Cup) and signed Lambo, which has proved an inspired acquisition. Haven't heard him say anything negative about the club despite the way he left either.

Pards made a point of coming in and chatting to us all, thanking us for coming. My nipper wanted a pic with him. When I asked, Pards took a full 5 mins to chat with him and have a pic taken. Top top guy and my lad was over the moon. Great manager too as he is proving at Newcastle where everybody gave him no hope.

Saints foreva Posted 18 November, 2012 Share Posted 18 November, 2012 Shouldn't get any reception. Did an average job here and it was only average because he won a paint pot. Pardew helped turn things around at the club, after the depths of despair of the previous season. Very solid foundations were laid and that was part of the reason the overall picture was much brighter when Adkins took over (league position not withstanding). Fitzhugh Fella Posted 19 November, 2012 Author Share Posted 19 November, 2012 Depends what the reason for him leaving was. However what ex-managers, still (potentially) involved in football would not get a warm welcome? This point alone should get him a standing ovation from some!!! He deserves credit for turning our club around when it was well and truly down and out and instilled confidence with his "Restoring a Winning Mentality" process. A warm round of applause and even a quick Only One Alan Pardew .... followed by an absolutely eardrum splitting Only One Nigel Adkins.
david in sweden Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 History does strange things sometimes... ...though he had a good season when we won JPT, there was obviously a pretty severe rift between him and Cortese (over ethical standards.....we may never know the whole story)..but in the long run, we got a good / better deal with Nigel Adkins. Pardew?..I'm neutral ...if the result goes against us.... OK as long as he doesn't gloat too much. From his side .....he's done alright. Cortese would never have given him an 8 year contract. bpsaint Posted 19 November, 2012 Share Posted 19 November, 2012 The last time I saw the bloke was there was a mutual applause being shared as we had just won 4-0 away from home, was a shock what transpired the following Monday. He deserves at least a round of applause for what he achieved here, perhaps the fair weather fans that didn't bother to come and watch games in L1 have a different viewpoint. Granted we could have achieved more that season but we were still recovering from turmoil at the start of the season, like NC has always said if the Pinnacle farce hadn't delayed the takeover by ML for a month we could have had a squad fit and prepared to hit the ground running. If those first 10 games had been like those when we finally found our form we'd have been promoted a season earlier easily. He helped install a winning mentality into the team, signed some key players that got us out of League 1 and some of those played a key role in promotion from the Championship, espically RL without whom i dread to think where we'd be. He also deserves credit for revieving the fortunes of Adam Lallana, as i seem to recall he was ready to leave following the dutch duo debacle. That lad is now our captain FFS. That first season in L1 was one of the most enjoyable to be a saints fan for years, as we were regularly winning games comfortably home and away, not to mention the trip to Wembley, regardless of it being a tin point trophy. Basically anyone who thinks its acceptable to boo the bloke after the foundations he helped lay is nothing short of an imbecile.
