Lambert pure class

RL was pure class yesterday and the way he controlled his headers to get them into the path of others took me back to my hero as a kid watching BIg Ron Davies. Not only was RL heading great but his control and interplay with Ramirez, Punch and Al . We looked a good team yesterday and it refreshed my belief in the way the club is heading.

Not taking anything away from him or the others yday as they were all 1st class (except our defence at times and gazza) but we need them to be that dominant against other teams, not just the worst team in the league. QPR looked even more dodgy at the back than we have in previous games!

They say football is a game of opinions, but really, were we watching the same game!?

Your right its all about opinions but I think the fact that's he's always gonna be known as a saints legend clouds judgement and by Ricky's standards that wasn't his best game even the commentators said he seemed a little slow as he missed the target by some distance on a couple if chances that he'd normally have buried I'm not by any means saying he isn't a great player

Be surprised if there are many Saints fans who need convincing of Lamberts class.

Umm.

I'll happily state that Lambert is a powerful footballer. I'd say without a moments hesitation that he's a able and proven goal scorer at all levels now. I wouldn't disagree if anyone said that he's on course to become a club legend here - if he's not one already that is. But when I think of 'class' the type of players who come to mind are the exceptionally gifted types like MLT, Glen Hoddle, or Eric Cantona for instance - I don't place Rickie Lambert in that company.

Look at yesterdays goal and you'd be hard pressed to call that a 'class' goal as I understand the term - bravely taken and most welcome for sure - but somewhat agricultural in its nature. So I can't really agree that Sir Rickie is 'pure class' - but he'll do for me anyway.

He is arguably the most gifted technically at the club as well (although obviously lacking the pace to take it past players).

so one million lambert is more technically gifted than our fourteen million golden boy? To me lambert is simply so good because he is a grafter pure and simple and works so hard to get to the right positions and has a good strike on him and powerfull in the air but he's never going to be doing the tricks and finesse and pure technique of say van Persie they are poles apart

Lambert did not have his best game yesterday IMO but what little he did do was pure class (I also watched Football First when I got home - sad!). My daughter commented during the game on how many times he just let the defender win the ball in a 50/50 challenge particularly in the air. However, I fully understand that the good that comes from Lambert far outweighs the inconsistency.

I did say arguably. Ramirez looks fantastic, but I haven't seen him do anything technically so far (little flicks, killer passes, long range shots) that I haven't also seen Lambert do at some stage for us.

He was very good yesterday.

However because he's so good I get frustrated when he wastes possession in silly ways. This does happen a fair amount and usually when he's worked himsef into a great position at which point he tries to play a cute, killer pass and gives the ball away. Case in point at 2-1 against Man Utd when he broke down the right, Ward-Prowse got himself free and was screaming for the ball in the middle. Lambert looks up, delays the pass, delays the pass, delays the pass and then tries to square it far too late and the ball is lost.

I still love him though.

Ricki is a Saints legend, period. His goals, his touch, his modesty and his love for the club is there for all to see.

An area he needs to improve in the PL and he will is to come for the ball when its crossed or passed to him not wait for it; that worked in league 1 and the championship but not in the PL, even yesterday

Brave header yesterday took a boot to his face but made it count Legend

Lambert is going to be one of those players whose name will live on in saints legend...if he left tommorrow he would last long in the memory. He was my kids first saints hero (along with Adam and Kelvin). It's not just that he is a good footballer but the guy is so damn nice with it........... he had to work his nuts off to get were he is and you can't help but like him for that.

Defenders usually climb all over him to win 50/50's, it's been happening for years and referee's just let it go. Ferdinand was no exception Yesterday and did this a number of times, so glad it was him who scored the OG.

it is not about winning 50/50's people are saying MLT was class, but I dont recall him winning many headers against centre halves...or midfielders or Ronnie Corbett . RL had control of the ball and caressed it around linking with other teammates, for a centre forward he was superb

The header down for Puncheon's missed chance was the classiest ball of the whole game. Took the power off it, the pace of it, cleaend the ball, inflated it a pound, gift-wrapped it and handed it to Punch on a plate with a salad garnish and hint of Balsamic vinegar and pure extra virgin olive oil...

That explains why Punchy didn't score ..... he wasn't sure wether to kick it or eat it :?

Don't understand how people aren't rating his performance yesterday. He out-powered, out-thought and out-classed their entire defence yesterday. For the first 5 minutes he did not challenge aerially which was a worry, but after that he toyed with them and controlled that back two without getting out of second gear. I mean he chested balls they wanted to head and didn't leave the ground for flick ons. That was what was great about him yesterday his target man play.

Massively this. By the end they were fouling him every time.

Still dont think he's all quite there yet but looked better as the game went on.

This for me, looked better than he has done recently but there were still some odd occasions were he did nothing when he should have been more 'at it'. Lallana drilled a ball right across the 6 yard box after being played in by Ramirez and we had 3 players doing f-all rather than attacking it for a simple tap in, Lambert was one of them. At another point shaw corssed to the back post and Lambert let it go out for a goal kick for some reason. He was also out of the box on a few occasions when he should have been in it.

I don't think he has been 100% in recent weeks and looks like he isn't quite match fit/sharp but I imagine the goal will boost his confidence and the set up with Ramirez playing off him seems to suit him a lot.

All our forwards played well on Saturday but was not totally impressed with Ricky. Some of his positioning was begging the question where is the centre forward and the stagnant delays upon receiving the ball doe not help. He's still not jumping properly but can do a job because of his aerial threat. JRod has had enough chances and will just have to feed off the scraps until he becomes a must have. If Mayuka could do the business then it's definitely time for Ricky to make way but none of the coaching staff see that. The trouble is that without Lambert we have no real aerial threat, hence why he is played more that JRod who Adkins has been desperate to fit into the first 11. I still believe we need someone to replace Ricky but he's not in the squad at present.

He was good at knocking the ball down (complete unshock there) but some of his passing around the box was woeful on Saturday - which I hasten to add is pretty out of character for Lambert. Not sure any of his "interplay" was of any note either. He was most definitely not "pure class", though "competent target man" wouldn't have been far from the mark.

Was lucky enough to see Matt Le Tiss play, but I was really young. Rickie Lambert is the only person on that SaintsWeb banner that I've watched loads, been able to appreciate properly, and seen the majority of his goals. I'd like to think he's one I'll be able to tell my future kids and grandkids about. He's been absolutely pivotal in our rise through the leagues. A Saints legend, in my opinion.

He looked off the pace and lacklustre to me but if a seventy percent lambert can score imagine a 100% one

Can't disagree with that really, his form's been pretty dubious for the last month or so and when has he ever gone 5 matches without scoring for us before ? Took some guts to go for that header, but then it was a goal on a plate and that's what he's there for. Luckily for us, QPR were awful and hopefully it'll give him a boost, seeing as our next 2 matches are at home and he'll probably start at least one of them.

Can't really argue with that, we are looking to replace him within a couple of seasons but for as long as we play like he's on the pitch when he isn't we're going to struggle - the Prem Route is to find someone more mobile who offers a threat in behind, though for as long as we're playing the bottom sides we should be ok with Lambert in there and Lallana/Puncheon/Ramirez doing the running in on goal.
