Roger Posted 15 November, 2012 Share Posted 15 November, 2012 Off poorly today so had a look at gastons second half performance so thought id report back. Really showed good touch as always and moments of class, made space but the number of times the team didnt pass to him when he was in good positions were frustrating. He played deeper than he plays for us. His corners were not very good and he had one chance one on one which he side footed way over the bar, to suarez's disgust. Was interesting that he seemed to play better and was more involved when suarez went off. Looks a bit like when le tiss played for england and they didnt play to his strengths in the times i've watched him play. I do think he needs to work on his finishing a bit though at times but his through balls and close control are excellent. Maybe he was cruising to prevent injury for sat. Turkish Posted 16 November, 2012 Share Posted 16 November, 2012 yeah, those damn 5 yards passes....Barcelona should also know better than to play those all the time... What a silly comment. Jamie has a point, everything he does no matter how simple is lauded as brilliant and when he gives the ball away cheaply it's 'unlucky' whereas the place would be in meltdown if Guly had done the same. He's clearly a very talented player but the reality is in his time here he's only played really well for about 45 'minutes against Aston Vile. Miltonaggro Posted 16 November, 2012 Share Posted 16 November, 2012 Ramirez is hell of a player and is on a different planet to his team mates at the moment (three times on Saturday he threaded a needle with a pass and nobody was running on), once his fitness catches up and the rest of the side catches on he is going to be a potential trump card for us every game. Just a shame that the failure to sign the necessary defenders means that we can't fully relax and enjoy the talent at the moment...

Spot on, We talk about football a lot at work and down the pub and not one of my mates that support other sides ever brings him up. Nothing along the lines of "that Ramirez looks a good player/prospect". When Tim Vickery goes on the radio doubting he'll make it in the Premiership, posters call him an idiot ect. I hope he does well and he has got skill and potential, but he's given the ball away more than anyone else the past 2 games and apart from 45 mins against a poor poor Villa side, has been average at best. JackanorySFC Posted 16 November, 2012 Share Posted 16 November, 2012 Along with the poster earlier that has a mate that watches Serie A a lot, I have an interest in European football and Serie A in particular. Last year I watched Bologna play Juve at Stadio Renato (scene o my favourite England goal, Platt vs Belgium) and the player that stood out miles above anyone else was Gaston. It reminded me of the performance Lavezzi out in the first time I went over to watch Napoli, he was that good. Ever since I have kept an eye on Bologna and they are seriously struggling without him. He was one of the stand out performers last season (I was watching Bologna purely to see how he was getting on along with Napoli due to Lavezzi) and genuinely one of the brightest talents in European football. In the games I've seen him (everyone except West Brom) he is clearly the most talented player in our side - and by a distance. His touch and vision are on a different planet, he will lose the ball a lot, as he takes chances. I personally don't mind this but don't expect Jack Cork esque 5/ 10 yard sideways passes (which I don't have a problem with, our build up play needs that patience in it), he (similar to Suarez in a way) looks forward whenever he gets the ball and finds the gap behind the defence for a striker to run on to. The sort of thing you can't coach. He has impressed me with his strengh and ability to win the ball back, funnily enough he was seen as "dirty" in the Italian league and picked up a lot of bookings, the robustness of the Prem allows him to use his strength more without the ramifications of continental football. I am certain he will be the difference between staying up and going down, I rate him that much. We have a lot of ignorance in this country about the way continental sides/ players play. This is one of the reasons, in my opinion, why our national team continues to fail and our club sides get battered in the UEFA cup. We need to be more patiant with players and accept they will lose the ball now and again, I like a side made up in the Big Mac way of roadsweepers and violinists, Gaston will be sold in the next 2 years at (my guess) a substantial profit, I expect after Uruguay do very well in Brazil, enjoy him why we have him - I never expected little old Saints who I grew up supporting would sign someone as big as Gaston, and I intend to enjoy watching him play. Up the f***ing Saints.

Up the f***ing Saints. I am not a fan of today's Italian football, too wimpy as their abject display against the French the other night showed. You do have to ask yourself though how many Italian "Stars" have really made it in the PL . English football is something different and many a really good player hasn't made the grade but has refound his qualities on returning to some other European league. Midfield in the PL must be one of the hardest ever places to play.
Sour Mash Posted 16 November, 2012 Share Posted 16 November, 2012 He's a massive signing for us, both in terms of money and status. For a club like us to shell out that sort of dough we really need him to stand out, take control of games and run the show, not just show glimpses of talent here and there. There's no doubt the lad has ability, we just need to make sure we get as much out of him as we can.

Midfield in the PL must be one of the hardest ever places to play. No harder than the Bundeslega or Primera Leagua looking at the domestic and European performances from their sides I've watched this season? As for Italian football being "wimpy", that wimpyness has won them 4 World Cups (2 runners up) and 1 Euro Championship (and 2 runners up including this year), although I'm sure you prefer "get stuck in", "do him", "launch it" football, maybe we should build our team around Andy Carroll? The French beating them papers over the cracks of a national football side, somehow, in more turmoil than us, most recently M'Villa getting a 2 year ban from the National side after "leading a nightclub visit" on the back of mutianies and group stage exits from major tournaments. Your right on Italian players though failing to adapt to the Premier League though. However I think the Premier League has a much greater emphasis on technique now and Ramirez would never have been described as a "typical Italian" sort of player by anyone that watches Serie A, far more direct (with his passing) and physical than, say, Aqualani. We'll wait and see. As SM says this is a huge signing for us, judge him at the end of the season along with the rest of the side, be patient with him, expect him to give it away now and again but also expect him to do things no one else in our squad would even think possible. As I mentioned earlier, try and enjoy him, as he's far too good for us long term. All IMO of course.

You can judge nothing by comparing it to England's side, Hodgson is an old idiot and just stabs a pin in a list of players that the Sun and the Mirror give him to pick the team. All the best players in the Prem are not qualified for England. I mean he picked AOC didn't he ? Absolutely idiotic selection policy. Look at last weeks squad Wilshere with 1 game under his belt, back in the England squad. Edited 16 November, 2012 by Window Cleaner

Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 16 November, 2012 Share Posted 16 November, 2012 Would you have rather had Ramirez or Michael Dawson (£7.5m) + Scott Dann (£3.5m) + another left back (£1m) for the same amount of money? Scott Dann is worse than what we have and Blackburn wanted £6m. A £1m LB is likely to be worse than what we have. I'd take Dawson over Rodriguez though. Avenue Saint Posted 17 November, 2012 Share Posted 17 November, 2012 Along with the poster earlier that has a mate that watches Serie A a lot, I have an interest in European football and Serie A in particular. Top post.
Mr X Posted 17 November, 2012 Share Posted 17 November, 2012 Anyone who would pay 7.5 million for Dawson would be immediately sectioned. Thats what the other clubs think about us spending 14 million on ramirez
VectisSaint Posted 17 November, 2012 Share Posted 17 November, 2012 Thats what the other clubs think about us spending 14 million on ramirez Do they? The Skates might think this, but otherwise I don't think any serious club thinks we are mental. Ramirez has the potential (at 21 it is still potential) to be the most talented player to pull on a Saints shirt (I know that will bring squeals of anger from the Le God lovers but this is genuine talent rather than hero worship). He will unfortunately not be a Saints player for many years, possibly only one if we get relegated, so make the most of what you are seeing this year. Injury apart, he will be playing and starring for a top European team in the next 3 or 4 years. He does however need to work on one part of his game, his passing. At the moment gives the ball away far too often and in very dangerous areas.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 17 November, 2012 Share Posted 17 November, 2012 My memory tells me that Jackanory was a story telling programe aimed at young children. But if Gaston truly is 'genuinely one of the biggest talents in European football' - rather than just another good player - then I take it we can expect to see some match winning performances delivered by this special player before very long .... today would seem to be as a good time to start as any. Based on what we have seen here thus far, I must say I'm not completely convinced he really is 'all that' but time will tell.

And I don't mean more practice at it.

Saints boy in Leeds Posted 17 November, 2012 Share Posted 17 November, 2012 He's a massive signing for us, both in terms of money and status. For a club like us to shell out that sort of dough we really need him to stand out, take control of games and run the show, not just show glimpses of talent here and there. There's no doubt the lad has ability, we just need to make sure we get as much out of him as we can. This
