What an absolute ton of bandwagon ********, I have heard a lot about scapegoats in my time, for many different clubs, Downing is just another one.

I remember about 2 years ago I said Lucas was probably one of liverpools best players and they would seriously miss him if he wasnt there, I was called an idiot..

Downing was outstanding at Boro, and was the prem assist leader for Villa which prompted the 'pool to pay an overpriced £20m on him. As Chez said, he wasnt even that bad really, and in a cut price deal I would snap their hands off.

Fact is, people forget, Downing, Henderson and Carroll were in the form of their lives before killer kenny came along and ruined their careers, still, ask a liverpool fan and he was a great manager not given proper backing

Well I must have watched him on some of his bad days. Maybe he was good and the rest of the 'Boro side were s**t? Even in his best season (2004/05).. he scored only 6 goals in 49 matches

He is already 28 y.o. and topped 300+ league games and scored just 29 career goals. In 34 games for England, he is yet to score....

Liverpool are presently playing him at left back, and if they paid £20 million for him...how much do you think he would cost now ? A rumour (on Wikipedia) suggests he is returning to *Boro - ON LOAN.

Phil mcnulty on bbc is saying Liverpool have agreed 4 million deal for Tom Ince? Thought Blackpool wanted more than that?

dont liverpool have a very large sell on clause...?

probably negotiated around that...

Yep - would have been different terms for them than any other club.

Wonder if we will go back for Phillips - his value has probably dropped a bit even, due to injury and form not being as good as last year.

"Meanwhile, the Daily Mail says that another potential target is French centre-back Nicolas Isimat Mirin, another player who is out of contract in 18 months.

The 21-year-old is a regular for Valenciennes in Ligue 1 and is a French U21 international. Liverpool are targeting him because they believe first choice centre-half target - Feyenoord's Stefan de Vrij – could be too expensive."

Maybe we were also having a look at him when looking at that Sanchez felllow? anyone know anything about him?

doubt if we ever really looked at Sanchez anyway, he's crap and wouldn't get anywhere near our first team. I wouldn't believe anything you read in papers about signings from France just now, it's agent money earning time. However having said that I read that Liverpool won't be going for top rate players this January because they're a bit skint and will go for stop gaps until the summer. Isimat-Mirin is a bit of a non-entity really as is anyone playing for Valenciennes at this moment.

Ricardo Quaresma been released from Besiktas now free transfer? Wages would be high I guess?

Following the 3–0 defeat to Spanish side Atlético Madrid in the first leg of Europa League, Quaresma had an alteration with manager Carlos Carvalhal when the incident happened in the dressing room at half-time after Carvalhal put off Quaresma for İsmail Köybaşı much to his dismay as he did not take the news lightly and began throwing water bottles, before launching a stinging attack at Carvalhal. Quarsema allegedly said, "I brought you here, you just think of yourself," the former Inter and Barcelona star. "If I was not here, [Carvalhal] would not be here. You can not remove me from the match because you're nothing." This incident with Carvalhal led the club suspended Quarsema from playing indefinitely.[19]

High wages and it would appear an even higher opinion of himself.

Out of interest has a player tempted by the Turkish experience ever come back to "mainstream" football in the same state as before he went there, ie playing standard improved or at least not diminished.

Have you forgotten the majestic displays Barry Venison gave for our own fair club on his return from Turkey???

Everyone's favourite Journalist Alan Nixon says the Sunday People should have a story on a Saints defensive target.

His comments:

"New name, bit of a suprise"

"Bit of a risk. But very honest player"

"You're always better judging players AFTER they move"

"A very whole-hearted Championship player"

Someone like Mark Hudson at Cardiff perhaps? Very solid CB who does his job extremely well and chips in with a few goals each season. Rated as the best CB in champ so far this season by many pundits.

Could be - but Hudson seems a bit old at 30 for the type we normally go for.

Agree but he's someone who played with Fonte before and would offer a great deal of experience to the back line. Quality wise, not so sure but as another option at CB, I definitely wouldn't say no.

Lewis Dunk at Brighton fits that description, is young, fits our profile & has been linked with Prem before (Newcastle, I think). Complete guesswork but would undoubtedly wind Poyet up so worth a punt for that reason alone.

It could of course be a reworking of the Rhys Williams at 'boro story.

Don't think that would be a surprise to be fair, Rhys Williams is quality. If he didn't have so many injury problems he'd be a constant in a lot of prem teams.

It's someone we've not been linked with before which rules out Rhys Williams

Why doesn't he just say "Sunday People will have a story about X, a new Saints transfer target"

Damn...

@GraemeBailey: Carles Puyol, Xavi and Lionel Messi all sign new four-year deals at Barcelona.

ah rubbish. he'll never hold that form. Next season he'll only score 50 .....and they'll let him out on loan. Then's the time to get him in ....
