I'd genuinely be very happy if we only signed one player this window, as long as it is Fraser Forster. Would become our keeper for the next 10 years if we could keep hold of him. Solid as a rock.

Obviously I'd take Astori as well if the money was there, plus a winger, maybe Scott Sinclair on loan.

We won't sign Fraser Forster, he has a Champions League knockout phase match against Juventus to look forward to.

Butland isn't even much better than Gazza at the moment, but hopefully if he does come we get behind him and he ends up reaching the potential it seems he has.

I understand doubts about signing another inexperienced GK , but not sure I fully go along with that. Has Gazzaniga been selected by his national team - at any level, let alone full internationa ? Or was he part of their Olympic squad ? Perhaps this is just reinforcing the idea that Butland has been vastly overhyped,or that England have less options in the gk dept than Argentina. It does also indicate Butland is clearly highly rated (yes, I accept largely "for the future").

In truth, we simply don't know if he is, or will be, better than Gazzaniga. Question is, can we afford to take the risk ?

Kaspar Schmeichel is a better prospect than Butland.

Kasper Schmeichel is 7 years older than Jack Butland!

For a keeper of 26 years old, Schmeichel has hardly had a glittering career.

There is no chance of this one happening but Dede from vasco de gamma would be a great signing. 6ft 3, quick strong ball playing centre half with full Brazilian international caps. He'll leave Vasco soon as they are struggling financially, probably end up at a champions league club.

Dede, or Douglas of Twente, are probably the ones who stand out, but little prospect of either I suspect. Especially Dede with the work permit issue.

If people on here are talking about a new winger, what about free agent Ricardo Quaresma?

He's a real player, but a very odd mentality. Which is why clubs always seem to let him go.

I remember him at Porto though, unplayable at times. He's never really discovered his Porto form elsewhere.

Joe Cole good signing for WUM, I expect a GK and centre back before Villa

Joe Cole allegedly on 90k a week. He has a lot to prove. Ita not 2005/06 now. He shouldnt be the top earner at any Prem team.

west ham paying £30k a week of it.....apparently

I think he is going on a free transfer not on loan. No way he will have dropped from 90k to 30k, especially when he still had time on his Liverpool contract.

Maybe, but if he gets offered a great deal, would he really turn that down to play two fixtures (which is all it will be)? This is his chance to come back to the PL, his chance to seriously be in consideration for England No. 1 jersey. You sure he would reject that to play in one CL fixture against Juve? Celtic will be knocked out at that stage anyway.

If its a choice between paying £5m for Butland, who has looked unconvincing at best at Championship level this season, or £8-10m for Forster, it's a no-brainer for me.

I think we need 4 players and will probably get rid of a few too

GK - Butland would be good...Gomes from Spurs would also be a nice addition

CB - Astori would be the business...love to sign him...or Douglas from Twente would be fantastic

CM - Still think we need a bit of beef in the middle, despite Cork transforming our season...i like Trotter from Millwall or maybe Tom Huddlestone if Spurs would sell

Winger - I really feel one of Ince or Phillips from Blackpool would be fantastic for us...maybe Lens as an alternative

I think De Ridder, Sharp, Seabourne, Dickson need to be moved on

Just goes to show that English fans, managers and club chairman are always ready to appreciate qualities trumpetted by the press that a player doesn't actually have. Saw Cole play for Lille a couple of times last season and he is a truly ordinary player.

I see Yossi Benayoun is back at Chelsea.

Frankly, I would try to get him in.

Chelsea looked like they could well use him last night. They don't have too many CMs, Mikel is injured, Lampard blows hot and cold and Luiz was awful last night. Unless they're buying a CM this window Benayoun might well stay. Just hope that they're not casting their eyes on any of ours.

West Ham sent him back because he is injury prone and on about 70k a week.

We are more likely to recall Forecast and play him at left back than sign Benayoun.

Benayoun is an attacking midfielder and they have Oscar, Mata, Hazard, Marin, Moses and Piazon so safe to assume he won't get a look in.

Benayoun would be good providing Chelsea subsidise wages. Need more depth in winger/attacking midfield positions. West Ham fans love him, and he hasn't played for Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal through lack of talent.

getting old though, wouldn't fit in with our policy;

Benayoun really isn't very good IMO. Not worth the money you'd have to pay for him.

Just a player i've always rated. He would be expensive and maybe past his best but I would like to see what he could do in a saints shirt at least.

For 70k a week I would want a bit more than what he offers which is mostly injury. These days when fit he isnt as good as Lallana IMO. His time was 3 or 4 years ago.

If he was on lower wages then worth a shot, but not at that kind of money.

Poor suggestion from you lad. I expect better.

@UK_TransferNews @SkySports Rumurs saying the norwegian centreback Vegard Forren is spotted outside St. Mary's. #Saintsfc #saints

Read somewhere earlier (sorry, can't remember where) that Everton might be the unknown club concerned. Sounds like he's a promising player, though, so hope it's us as it'd be a good indication that we're looking to do our business early.

players "spotted" at St Marys rumours are never true

Not til we get the obligatory Hotel report...

That is after the airport sighting at bagggaggge carousel....

With the taxi ride story thrown in...:D

Just remembered where I read it - not the best source, in hindsight!!

Fourth Official @FourthOfficial_ 1h

Vegard Forren looks like he could be on his way to Goodison Park, Molde confirm he is finalising a move to an unknown club.

Nothing is certain until someone working at Costa in Soton Airport tells us that they saw him arrive today.
