Players you thought would be great?

I remember reading so much about a guy called Cosimo Sarli who I thought would be a great player plus someone called Mark Peters, what on earth happened to him as he was banging them in for the youth teams.

Who did you think could of gone on to become a special player but failed somehow?

PS Title thread should be........

Players who you thought would be great?

Another for old timers ...

Fred Kemp ... saw a couple of games where he totally bossed the midfield and looked a world-beater then seemed to fizzle out.

Tommy Jenkins ... a most amazing dribbler of the ball ... unfortunately most of the time no end product

Also worth a mention (though effected by injuries) ... David Hirst, Perry Groves, Charlie George

Special mention to the "tin man", Delgado.

Adrian Caceras, was a bit of a hot shot in the reserves for us and I thought he'd go on to be a star but it turned out he was a bit crap. Funnily enough I saw him in action playing against Perth Glory when i visited Australia, so he found his level really.

Dani Rogrigues was another, did well in the reserves, flirted with the first team a bit then disappeared. I know he ended up at Bompey for a while, don't know what happened after that.

Oh and as mentioned above Frederico "The Torpedo" Arias. He was touted as being a lightning quick skillful winger which got us fans excited, then turned out he was just a bit **** really.

Andrei Peryplyotkin...

AMEN to that one.

He seemd a mile better than anyone else in that youth side, but fell foul of the Home Office / FA rulings about youth players / games / etc, etc .....paragraph whatever it was, and we weren't allowed to keep him......but I bet Man.Utd would ......if he'd been their player......

Definitely Federico Arias; I went to St. mary's to see his first showing for the reserves; he looked utterly dreadful with the ball but, even more worryingly, there was absolutely no sign whatsoever of the electric pace that we'd heard so much about. And they called him the torpedo. Thankfully his uselessness was sussed about before he made a first team bow.

Andrei Peryplyotkin...

He was supposed to be amazing. I spoke to Ian Jureyff about him when he was at the club and said that he was one of the best young players hed ever seen. There was some issue with his permit that meant he could play in front of a paying crowd or somethign odd like that IIRC. Last seen playing in Ukbekistan i believe.

All of them, we build our young players up into mega-stars all of the time and most of them come to nowt. Mark Peters...................[/QUOTE]

.....if I recall the story on here a while ago, he was a bit of a hooligan and a very bad presence in the dressing room. Later went to Brentford ... was it ? ....and then disappeared into oblivion.

** NOTE: Which one of you wrote that note about Mark Peters ?

Andrei Pereplyotkin (Or now Andrejs Pereplotkins now he has decided to be Latvian) turned up at Derby in the Poortaloo era and made no impact what so ever. Ended up at Skonto Riga when he left Saints. Awesome on CM03/04.

I think players like Saga and Skacel were the victims of circumstance, more specifically Burley. The later formed a very credible left sided partnership with Bale in the brief period he played in midfield. I think missing the whole of preseason ruined his fitness though. Saganowski's goals came in fits and starts, very much a confidence player and reminded me of Beattie to an extent. Awesome on his day and scored some brilliant goals in healthy numbers when the team suited him. I certainly don't buy all the 'only playing for a contract' boolacks people come out with.

For me the biggest disappointments were DMG, who ripped the youth leagues appart but couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo in the first team (and still can't with Forest). Tin Man was another (it's his birthday on 23rd December don't forget!) and McCann't are definite candidates too. Griffit, Folly, Jamie Hatch, Jamie White, Fish Mills and Jake Thompson were all good nominations from our youth team too.

More on Folly. Aparrently he has had to retire due to a heart condition and now works at the JJB store in Meadowhall. Feel sorry for him, thought he had the potential to be a real top PL player.

I feel sorry for his heart problems but on the other hand he has been doing a bad impression of a footballer for about 10 years before he retired.

Those days 9 years ago when there were dreams of a future Saints team being built around the talents of Leandre Griffit, Fitz Hall and Yoann Folly.

My personal favourite was always Dexter Blackstock, such promise in his first few appearances but at a time when we were imploding, then we shipped him off to QPR. He's never quite fulfilled his potential for me, even though the Forest fans love him.

Charlie George. Loved it when he played, but seemed to be perpetually injured / gardening. McMenemy put it well at the time in saying it was like owning a fabulous diamond permanently locked in a safe...

I did see Charlie George play for us...............or was that the cardboard cut out.

I can remember one match after the Flymo incident when he was paraded on the gantry above the West Stand at half time, I think to remind the crowd who he was. When he played his record was pretty good for an 'attacking midfielder' something like twelve goals in forty games...

Marcelo Tejera - was built up by Redknapp and supposed to be class player, he was a Urugian international i believe. Never played a match for us.

Mark Paul and Cosimo Sali were supposed to be brilliant prospects who never made it for some reason.

That guy was supposed to be the next massive things, goals for fun in the under-teams etc etc etc.

Anders Svensson

He was good and did well for us, but I always felt like he was about to become amazing and he never quite did. You always felt that if he could just get himself a little more time on the ball he could do incredible things and you could almost build a team around him, but he was only ever "quite good" or disappointing. Nice that he found his place to stand out back in Sweden though.

Tim Sparv was awesome in the youth team, never really moved on to next level for us, is Tadanari Lee going to be the new Marian (i.e always injured)?

I think Lee needs to actually contribute something before he can be compared to Marian.

He was a strange one not quite sure why he went. He's clearly a good player, plays for Gronigen inthe Dutch League and is a full Finish International.
