Block 18 Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Ok I have my poll cards, I can vote for one, but just what and who am I voting for? I dont know of any of the names up for election, I dont know if any of them belong to a political party or are just people who think that they can make a difference. If they want us to go out and vote they had better start telling us about themselves and what they stand for.
the stain Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 I got the postal vote through and for the first time saw the names of the candidates and which party they are affiliated to. I shan't vote because: 1. I don't understand what the role is all about or why it is needed 2. I have no idea what any of the candidates stand for as no one has dropped any fliers through my door or come round to state their position. I think the whole thing is a load of old bolloc ks. On the radio earlier this week there was some government minister type saying that she thought the turnout would be fine and the interviewer kept asking her whether a 15% turnout would be acceptable. She refused to put a figure on what is acceptable but I'd be very surprised if they got 15%. I dont think anyone really cares.
trousers Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Isn't there a website somewhere that explains who's who and what it's all about?
krissyboy31 Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Politicians as Police Commissioners, that'll work well!!
dingbattigger Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 http://www.policeelections.com/candidates/
miserableoldgit Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 Don`t you just hope that after the elections that somewhere will end up with a Commisioner Gordon!
badgerx16 Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 Why elect somebody to commission crime ? Surely we should be electing somebody to prevent it ?
dinger Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 Why elect somebody to commission crime ? Surely we should be electing somebody to prevent it ? To be fair, they're commissioning the police as well, so they've got the whole business sewn up. Saves any of the rest of us getting involved. Seems like a pretty neat solution to the problem.
Hatch Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 Well Michael Mates in his newsletter thingy, said he was going to cut crime. Gets my vote, cos no-one has thought of this before. I wonder if he came up with that on his own. The man is a genius.
pap Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 Why elect somebody to commission crime ? Surely we should be electing somebody to prevent it ? I actually thought that myself. "Ah yes, I'd like three classic burglaries done and a post-modern murder, ta"
thefunkygibbons Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 I believe that you need to vote for two, a first and a second place I will be voting and to that end, I have read the manifesto of all six candidates The six hampshire candidates are here http://www.choosemypcc.org.uk/candidates/stephen-michael-west/
The Cat Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 I just voted. Looking at the list only about 30 people in Hamble had been before me, surprised there was that many to be honest.
pap Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 I have voted and I'll stick my neck out. Jane Kennedy will win the Merseyside position.
Scummer Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 I believe that you need to vote for two, a first and a second place I will be voting and to that end, I have read the manifesto of all six candidates The six hampshire candidates are here http://www.choosemypcc.org.uk/candidates/stephen-michael-west/ I think you're able to vote for a first and second choice, but you don't have to. You can just choose one candidate.
CB Saint Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 The public with let the govt know what they think about this by their general lack of enthusiasm. The turnout will be dreadful. The very fact that they have politicised the candidates has put me right off. They should be totally independent. Incidently, I have been told that the labour candidate is actually very clued up and would do a vey good job.
Saintandy666 Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 I spoilt both my ballots. Don't agree with the system and I don't see why I should legitimise it. Keep politics out of the police force.
pap Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 Just been down to the polling station for the second time today. Don't worry; I haven't spent the day going back and forth in different guises ( e.g. turn up in kilt and proclaim myself McPap or anything ); just walking the missus down so she could perform her democratic duty. The people at the polling station told me that turnout had been dreadful. I'm not really a fan of the proposals; but now they're here I think it's probably important to pick candidates who won't try to privatise the Old Bill.

Agreed, I voted for the independent candidate - purely on the basis that politics should have nothing to do with being a police commissioner.
Weston Super Saint Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 The polling station in Bristol - which is having its mayoral elections today as well - managed a staggering 1 person in the first two hours this morning. They have 1,000 people lined up to count the votes overnight tonight, I suspect at that rate they may struggle to count 1 vote each!
aintforever Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 (edited) Virtually all the politicians on the list have no experience of Police work whatsoever. They are basically a bunch a people who have brown-nosed their way up through their party and want us to vote them into a 100K a year job they know nothing about whatsoever. Like all politicians their one and only concern when elected will be to get re-elected next time to keep their fat greedy ass in an pointless overpaid job. What you need in that role is some hard bastard ex cop who's only concern is catching criminals. Edited 15 November, 2012 by aintforever

aintforever Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 And the independents have experience too??? One of them is chairman of Crimestoppers and ex Police Authority Chairman. he would get my vote if I could be arsed to walk down the road, which I can't.
Ken Tone Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 One of them is chairman of Crimestoppers and ex Police Authority Chairman. he would get my vote if I could be arsed to walk down the road, which I can't. Get down there! I'll blame you if Mates gets his nice easy retirement job to boost his pension!
Secret Site Agent Posted 15 November, 2012 Posted 15 November, 2012 I've just voted for Don Jerrard. Ex solicitor and independant. I believe they should all be independant.
