Can't help but be jealous of watching the Celtic fans celebrate an awesome result last night but it got me thinking.

When was our last big weekday game when the stands was rocking & what IYHO has been the greatest evening match you have seen at St Mary's or the Dell?

West ham at home last season was pretty good

In the past 4-1 Liverpool on TV in the snow just after Bally took over was good

Before that 4-0 v West Brom in FA Cup in 76 was great night, as was Channon testimonial at the end of that season

Newcastle game mentioned by Pilchards above was 3-3 by the way

There was that cracker Vs Birmingham on a Tuesday night think we were 3-0 after 20 minutes and it was freezing.

Yep, good game - we bottled it in the second half, they pulled it back to 4-3 and hit the bar in the last min following a huge looping goal kick.

West Ham last season was good.

As was the most recent league cup against the skates.

3-3?

Blimey I know I was plissed that night but to throw away my betting slip as I thought it was 4-4 and not 3-3 has made it very painful now.

The Brum game will always stick out in my mind. Jones scoring 2 goals in as many minutes against the league leaders after they had start stronger was just brilliant. When Skacel made it 3-0 three minutes later I could barely believe it. The Brum fans were going mental at Maik Taylor. Then Jones accidentally cleared his own hat trick off the line. He didn't know where the ball was until it bounced off the top of his head and out for a goal kick. DJ Campbell's looping header in injury time nigh on stopped my heart though.

The only other ones which really stick out are the JPT games. Waigo's injury time equaliser against Norwich sent us all bananas, even though it was only the paint pot trophy. We won a couple of shootouts against Torquay and Norwich, then there was the MK Dons game which sent us to Wembley. We won 3-1 and our second goal was one of the funniest o.g.s I've ever seen. One MK defender hoofed the ball off the back of another and it bounced back into the net.

All good midweek hi-jinks.

Some great mid week memorys of The Dell during mid 70's -

1/ Ossie's debut v Leicester brought about a hope we could avoid relegation and added about 8000 to to the crowd. Think we won 1-0 but the place rocked - thought the oaps in the stands were going to come through the floor!! Sadly we went on to be the first team to fall foul of 3 up 3 down rule.

2/ Mentioned above WBA FA Cup replay 4-0, Channon hat trick. Absolutely sardined into The Milton. Each goal resulted in a surge and seemingly floated down to the next barrier and then crushed, whilst celebrating like a loon!! Happier outcome - went onto win The FA Cup.

3/ Anderlecht Cup Winners Cup. despite the late heart break as Jim Steele misjudged a bounce and we went out - what a night. Shame I couldn't make the earlier away leg. Sounded like fun despite the score!!

4/ 1st year in Div 2 beating Div 1 winners Derby County in a 5 star performance 5-0. Another Channon hat trick, but somehow managed to bow out to Colchester Div 3 or 4 at home next round!!

5/ Not at The Dell but it might as well have been as about 75% of the crowd were Saints supporters as a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Road virtually sealed promotion back to Div 1. collapsed wall and sporadic punch ups could't ruin a great night.

Been numerous others, but not many recently for me - but The Night to beat All Nights has to be Micky Channon's Testimonial capping a tremendous few days of Cup Winning celebrations and Open Bus Top Parades. The match itself was incidental, but The Dell was majestic that night and the like of which will never be seen again (although the SMS pitch celebrations for the last 2 promotions were pretty impressive).

Agree with all those and will raise you Palace (team of the 80's) getting dicked 4-1 after being promoted and coming here in October near the top of the league. A Phil Boyer hat-trick.

Boyer hat tricks were 10 a penny as were 4-1 home wins back then!!

You do realise we probably stood next to each other or drank in the same pub each of those games.:?

your right could only remember tham getting one goal back.

The 4-1 win v Liverpool on a Saturday afternoon when Doddy made his home debut when Chris Nicholl was in charge, still rates of one of the best Saints perfomances i've ever seen

What a night that was...Jim Cannon and that old skate Fenwick did not know what hit them that night! Remember Chelsea having Steve Sheerwood in goal one night match we beat them I think 3-0, Chelsea fans running on pitch being chased by Civic Centrals finest was a cracking night.

memories, memories.........

Back 50 years to season 1962-63. Having started the season with only 2 wins in the first 10 games (Um.. that sounds familiar..) we struggled up to 16th through the worst winter in 15 years, and started winning... FA Cup matches instead of league games until we came to the 6th round. We first drew 1-1 with Notts.Forest (a top side First Div. side in those days) at the City Ground and got a replay at the Dell on April 3rd 1963...and a walk-up crowd just short of 30,000 on a night to remember, because Forest were sublime against lowly Saints and we were already 0-3 down ...with only 16 minutes to go.

The fight back began with a goal from tough Liverpool-born CF George Kirby, then came a second when Kirby put the ball...and the Forest goalie ..into the back of the net, and the equalising third a few minutes from time. FT 3-3 ...and into EXTRA TIME....the Forest defence struggled to keep out Saints all-out attacks with their goalie making a string of brilliant saves to keep them in the tie . 3-3 AET.

the atmosphere that night was well-captured in the report from the legendary Hampshire journalist John Arlott, with these words in his column the following day.

" .the crowd-voice went on and on, in an atmosphere at once warm and electric; one of those emotional moments which sport, unpredictably and rarely, produces; which cannot be controlled, nor once shared, forgotten."

A week later the 2nd replay took place..at neutral White Hart Lane, and although the official crowd was over 42,000 .....there were surely even more outside the ground who couldn't get in.

Saints started...where they left off and totally decimated their opponents and ran out 5-0 winners. (Sadly I wasn't there for that game, but will forever recall the 3-3 game the previous week).

Newcastle at the Dell, 1995, when we were losing 1 nil on about 88 mins, and it finished 3-1 to Saints. Heany,Shipperley and Watson scored. Mental under the East Stand, cut my head open in the excitement, did not notice until about an hour later

was there for that one...kitson scored for them...was an incredible end..I was in the Lower East by the half way line watching it unfold from the back as I prepared for my exit....

who can forget beating pompey 2-0 in the carling cup...awesome

Yes,I was telling my son about this the other night. Cup Replays really were exciting back then as they happened within a few days of the original fixture, so a frenzy often built up quickly.

Great atmosphere that night, Channon scored within a minute, and Gilchrist scored a goal MLT would have been proud of.

MK Dons JPT Southern final second leg - cracking atmosphere.

Yes,it was.

Also remember

Friday night 2-0 v Liverpool , Wallace's overhead kick on BBC. (bit surprised I remember it all as it was a great p!ss up as well).

From younger days (c1971) 2-0 v Man City at home with 2 goals from 'Big Ron' sticks in my mind also,we needed points to secure safety (although a few more games to go) and they were chasing the title (Bell, Lee,Summerbee etc).

They had also just signed Rodney Marsh, which was supposed to guarantee them the title. We hadnt won for months, until winning 3-2 at Palace the previous Saturday.

We stayed up. Derby won the league. City came 4th by a point and never came close again till last season.
