Wurzel Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 First the "N" word, then the "C" word, now Spurs are being threatened over their fans use of the "Y" word. Just don't get this one, I've always understood Spurs fans use of it as being all inclusive, not an insult. Guess some people won't be happy until a whole alphabet has been banned. How long until Skates and Scummers are deemed offensive ?
the stain Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 The term Yid is offensive to many Jewish people. Unless you are Jewish, you cannot decide what is offensive to Jews and what is not. When you say "first the N word" it makes it seem like you don't agree with that word being frowned upon. Is that the case?
pingwing Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 It would be nice if Spurs fans stopped shouting Yid. Self insulting is just silly and its not clever bring an Israel flag to an away day at football. And they wonder why most fans come out with jewish stereotypes when they shout that sort of thing (and then play the video of the 2 fans fighting over friedels shirt by offering money to each other).

Dimond Geezer Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 My taff mate revels in the sheep-sh@gger nick name. He sent out christmas cards last year showing a field of sheep, his quip inside said "I'm hiding in the trees with my wellies on & a spare pair in my hands, flossy is looking hot today". Fact is if you want to be insulted, you will be. If you take it in the spirit it's meant, it adds to the banter.

Griffo Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Don't you think Swansea and Cardiff hear all that sheep****gers ******** every week? So, so boring. Let's just sing Saints songs.

Fact is just because something is okay for you and your 'taff mate', it doesn't actually mean that it's okay for everyone else. Life's a bit more complicated than that.
Thedelldays Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 I wonder if they call us "english vvankers" before we get a chance to abuse them...
Dimond Geezer Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 What a fascinating story. Really, fascinating? A mildly amusing anecdote may be, but if you find it fascinating then so be it. Thanks for pointing out how complicated life is, I was getting worried as I've managed to reach my mid-forties thinking it was really simple and smelling of roses.

I had a black mate and we all call him dirty Sambo and you know what, He abolutely loves it!!! Even his mum and dad started to call him it and when we had a fancy dress party once he came in a ball and chain and we all took turns to whip him and shout "come on sambo!!" and "dont eat my children you nig nog"! Oh how we all laughed!!! The video went on youtube and everything. They took it down for some reason. Edited 8 November, 2012 by Turkish

How long until Skates and Scummers are deemed offensive ? When "Skate" and "Scummer" become religious slurs, I should think. Spurs fans are at least partially responsible for making this "acceptable" in some quarters by attempting to take ownership of it, I hadn't even heard of the term before I lived with a Spurs fan as a student, he was always banging on about it, but then he was a grade A cockernee wyankaaar as well as a massive bullsh1itter.

Blimey, I agree with you. It is astonishingly tedious and head-slappingly unoriginal. In my experience it just gives Cardiff and Swansea's neanderthals an excuse to spout their equally tedious anti-English drivel as well.

The9 Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Pipe down you Newport sheepsha***r. Beckenham off of Saints Forever calls me Taffy ironically, you know. Newportonians don't generally have such a problem with the English as they all know they are one really. England football internationals are always interesting events in Newport pubs.

When you say "first the N word" it makes it seem like you don't agree with that word being frowned upon. Is that the case? These days that is not true. The definition of a "hate" incident allows third parties to be offended and report incidents to the police even if they are not the victim. If they as a third party deem an incident to be racist or motivated by prejudice then it will be treated as just that.

The definition of a "hate" incident allows third parties to be offended and report incidents to the police even if they are not the victim. This suits our society as there are plenty of people who are more than happy to be offended for other people.

Got be a little careful about that... think its right that even if you are a third party you stand up against what some might consider offensive - its the only way to ensure it becomes clear - people forget that just because a majority may find something acceptable and inoffensive banter, does not mean its not offensive...
Frank's cousin Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Jocks, Taffs offensive? maybe a few dont like it, but the terms are not associated with anything negative - the 'N' word was clearly associated with slavery and racist expression so there is a difference. Yes some Welsh and Scots dont like it, yet others embrace it - many Scots are know as Jock by other Scots... Think you need to be careful to understand that its less about the word and more about the association that comes with it. The taff sheep****gers will just think we are as unorriginal as everyone else - need something original

The fact is that the legal terminology is quite clear that you do not need to be the victim to report a hate incident or hate crime, and those incidents can refer to race, colour, gender etc. "Any incident which may or may not involve a criminal offence which is deemed by the victim or any other person to be motivated by prejudice or hate". Even if it's not actually motivated by anything other than someone's incorrect perception, then it still gets recorded and treated as such. That means that someone can report an incident on my behalf when I may not actually be offended by the remarks that were made. To me that is ludicrous. Let me be offended, let me report the incident if I wish How the hell they think they can enforce 20,000 Spurs fans not using the term "Yid" is something else mind.

So the law allows the Society of Black Lawyers to complain when one black rapper calls another black rapper a ******, if they wanted to.
