David Baddiel was banging on about this recently on R4. He was arguing with the official spurs fanclub about it, they reckon its ok, he doesnt. Which in my book means its ok. Baddiels not a tw*t because he's jewish, he's just a tw*t. Anyone that can make frank skinner look funny by comparison has to be a tw*t.

The point he's made in the past is that the 'Y' word shouldn't be used by anyone who isn't Jewish. The majority of Spurs fans aren't Jewish therefore this is not OK - I think it's a fair argument.

How do you mean? Like black guys are ok referring to themselves or each other as n*****s, but its not ok for anyone else to do it? I'm a bit puzzled. If a word is taboo, it doesnt seem to me to make any difference who says it, its still offensive. (Incidentally, I had no idea Baddiel was jewish until I heard that R4 piece, and I couldnt care less either way.)

This.

Also, when non-Jewish Spurs fans sing it, they are not attempting to be offensive; they wish to be identified with it. So rather than be offensive, I actually see it as compliementary.

Exactly, Im a cwnt and Alps is a cwnt, Im allowed to call Alps a cwnt cos im a cwnt.

That doesnt make the word cwnt anymore offensive however, no matter what context you use it in.

Cwnts

But what if I am not a cwnt, but I know you are, can I still call you a cwnt? Or is this cwntist?

I know a Jewish spurs fan and he loves the Yid Army chant. He would say its fine. So what's the problem? People being offended for others, no?

This clown from the black lawyers society was banging on about this today on 5live. This guy has a serious chip on his shoulder at the moment. What pees me off is the airtime he is getting

The guy is an attention seeking idiot. Shouldn't he be charged with wasting police time for the clatterburg situation?

Exactly. Very hypocritical, and utterly pointless. If a particular group of people feel that they are being insulted then its up to them to say so, and if people outside their group agree then its up to them to say so. If a particular group use that perceived insult about themselves, what is anyone else supposed to make of it?

He is acting purely out of self-interest, because he wants to start a black PFA. Not too obvious, I don't know why anyone gives him the time of day.

Perhaps there are different people involved with different opinions. Perhaps the majority don't care about the word and find it inoffensive, but some people do care about it and have bad associations and hate to hear it shouted. Perhaps some would call them over-sensitive, others would understand that you'd need more insight into their reasons for being uncomfortable with it.

There isn't a clear right and wrong here, but I don't have the OPs trouble understanding the paradox of some supporters embracing it and others disliking it.

Also, there are clear reasons why sometimes it's ok for an "insider" to use words others consider offensive, that outsiders can't get away with. In the pub I might call a good mate, or my brother a ****, if he said something stupid. he wouldn't be offended and I wouldn't have crossed any line. if the bloke at the next table walked over and called him a ****, that wouldn't be on at all.

We should all be able to see that clearly from the world of the football fan too. Saints are a bit crap. We all know this. we've all been agreeing about it on here for years and we argue about most things, but we can all admit that. yet if somebody supporting another club (especially pompey) said it to you, you'd probably get a bit defensive.

This is what I dont get about them, and with other things like feminist movements etc

How can you campaign for total equality etc and the also campaign for a group to start consisting completely of those inclusive of the group that doesnt want to be prejudiced ?

Black player award is another one. On the one hand claim total equality and on the other celebrate the achievements of black players. WTF? Are the different? Are they disabled or something? No,but it's a great chance for people to promote their agendas.

So Jewish Tottenham fans that like singing Yid Army should be banned from singing it because some tottenham fans jewish or non Jewish might be offended. What about the rights of the jewish fans that want to sing it?

Jewish spurs fans can sing at it provided the only other people in the stadium are Jews and as long as they sing it in a non offensive manner

Does that mean Black people can only refer to each other as ******s if there are only black people around who are not offended by that word?

Back to the problems that have now surfaced after the Spurs WHU game.... Perhaps that Society of Lawyers thingy had a fair point.

Can't condone in any way what the WHU fans did, but, after all the publicity the original questions raised created I think that while Outrage may be appropriate, Shock may not be the right word. More of a "well everyone else saw that coming" would be a better angle on the news reports.

Anyway Laws is an idiot and should get fired and WHU should be in real trouble.

And the Spurs fans and groups that felt the issue should not have been questioned ALSO need to take a look at themselves. There is a real danger this could become a regular (and unnecessary) offensive occurence

#rodforownback and think this may run for a while yet
