Wiggles31 Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Could this happen. He was originally a CB but converted to a CM. He is a neat and tidy player and could help relieve some of these hideous errors of late. Plus with Seabourne now on loan. What do people think?

Colinjb Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Careful, I suggested this a few weeks ago.....
Kingsland Red Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Or defensive midfield holding player..... or sweeper?
pingwing Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 No. For a start we are starting to get a grip on the errors with the West Brom game and Cork will be much needed in the midfield, where he's good.

Why not, it's not like we're shy about playing people out of position...
Wiggles31 Posted 7 November, 2012 Author Posted 7 November, 2012 I'm at the stage where I would more faith in him at CB than the others at the moment. Tbh even Lee at CB would give me more confidence than Fonte or Yoshida!
derry Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 He was pretty poor v Sheff Wed in midfield before doing his knee. I can't see him being a regular first teamer.
modern matron Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Deffo a possibility, he played their when on loan from Chelsea, and teams only play one up front, so Cork could be good there
Wiggles31 Posted 7 November, 2012 Author Posted 7 November, 2012 He was pretty poor v Sheff Wed in midfield before doing his knee. I can't see him being a regular first teamer. He was back from a long term injury. Bit harsh.
Turkish Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Not a chance. He was rubbish there last season. he was rubbish at right back. He is a central midfielder. I maintain if we are going to play a square peg in a round hole Jonno Quick is the man to play at CB. he is so fast he could sweep behind the Fonte and Fox as well as providing an attacking outlet by making a long clearance, sprinting forward and reaching the ball before it has landed.
Colbury Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 We need him in midfield. Especially after the last game where MS and SD were absolutely w*nk.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 He needs to put on a bit of weight, far too small for this position imo
egg Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 If we were to play 3 CB 's then he's an option, but not good enough in a 4. I wouldn't have him at RB either, just not good enough. He's a CM who should play there with 2 others and tighten us up in the middle.

Sorry but when was he rubbish last season? He is an option in what is a very poor defence, so temporarily he might be a better option so pls calm down....
Turkish Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Sorry but when was he rubbish last season? He is an option in what is a very poor defence, so temporarily he might be a better option so pls calm down.... He played a couple of times at centre back as a stand in and was rubbish. He was also rubbish at right back when he stood in there. I'm not talking about in midfield, i rate him there. he's a central midfielder and a very good one. When he's fit he's in the side in his true position ahead of Steve Davis.
egg Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Sorry but when was he rubbish last season? He is an option in what is a very poor defence, so temporarily he might be a better option so pls calm down.... He has looked poor at RB for us and will be worse at CB. I know we're struggling but square pegs in round holes won't solve that.
Viking Warrior Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Like to see him at right or left back push Cline or fox forward aka Wayne bridge
Chez Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 by the time Cork is fully fit he will have become the best player we have ever seen. He wasn't even first choice towards the end of last season in midfield. He's not a fullback or a centre back.

Until hes played about 4 games, not the world beater hes been built up to be and then everyone decides he needs replacing and looks lightweight and out of his depth.
toe_punt Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Careful, I suggested this a few weeks ago..... Three cheers for colinjb... Hip Hip!!

Agreed, we've made small improvements over the last couple of games, we need to keep that progression going. More changes are not going to help.
Colinjb Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Three cheers for colinjb... Hip Hip!! Well, the reaction isn't quite as bad this time. We must be getting desperate. http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?39705-Centre-Back-an-option-that-hasn-t-been-considered

I think we need someone to be vocal, organise and lead the defence.
S-Clarke Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 How would starting a CM at CB improve things?
S-Clarke Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 He needs to put on a bit of weight, far too small for this position imo Too lightweight for CM as well IMO, same as the rest of our midfielders. Too easily knocked off the ball.
Saint_clark Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Too lightweight for CM as well IMO, same as the rest of our midfielders. Too easily knocked off the ball. Hopefully he'll have been doing a lot of upper body strength work in the gym while he was out then.
Turkish Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Hopefully he'll have been doing a lot of upper body strength work in the gym while he was out then. He needs to do more core work to build up the strength fella. What good are strong arms and shoulders going to do when he's holding off an oponent or making a tackle. Massive tsk.
L1Minus10 Posted 7 November, 2012 Posted 7 November, 2012 Defensive Midfielder!!!!! Detailed to sit in front of Back 4 and protect centre backs.... absolutely vital. We'll let in 100+ goals this season if we don't sort this area out.
BadgerBadger Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 I'd rather play SRL there, would be much more effective than Cork
Saint Martini Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 The problems that the defense are having are start in the midfield. They don't get enough protection and the opposition get too much time and space to run at our back-line with the ball and playing throughballs. A better CB would be a huge plus but first and foremost we need to start defending as a team with the midfield giving our defense some protection. In short, I'd rather have Cork in midfield as a holding midfielder.
Dellman Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 He won't last two matches where ever he plays
Chez Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 The problems that the defense are having are start in the midfield.This. IMO we should get Jos back in the side, written off far too early as Fonte wrongly was, then get an extra non attacking body in midfield (preferably Prowse, maybe Cork) and lets become a little harder to beat.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 Other than getting in more competent players - i.e. of the Ramirez level, there is only one thing that might assist and that is more pace to ensure whoever is on the park can get back to cover and this is mostly needed in midfield. There are midfield players (and I include the two 'outside forwards' in this) that do not have the pace on them to track back in time or indeed the guts to put in a tackle. Chaplow is one of the better options and Cork has some of that ability too and until January I would be thinking about how to utilise them. Having 4 strikers on the pitch at the same time is a luxury we cannot afford.
saintbob40 Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 He was pretty poor v Sheff Wed in midfield before doing his knee. I can't see him being a regular first teamer. He was outstanding v Sheff Wednesday before he did his knee. He ran the midfield in a game we won to nil and carried a lightweight JWP who kept giving the ball away. I wonder what some people are watching at times.
tajjuk Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 No chaplow, just no. No to Cork at Centre Back as well. The back four is showing signs of improvement, they need to be left as is until we can strengthen. Once cork is fit then he's our best option at holding mid at the moment, he's far better defensively than Davis and Morgan. We need a midfield 3 with cork sitting, Schneiderlin as the ball getter and Ramirez as the playmaker. Then in January we need a proper defensive midfielder with some power and presence, like WBA have in Mulumbu, West Ham have in Diame, Newcastle have in Tiote etc.. I think this should be the main priority over even a left back. (but we should get one of those as well)
BotleySaint Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 We need Cork back, but not as centre back. He was a solid performer last season, let's hope it's soon.
Saint86 Posted 8 November, 2012 Posted 8 November, 2012 I'd rather see him as a deep defensive midfielder right in front of the back 2 to break up any pesky balls that come their way - or runs - such as the goals WBA scored from. MS needs a kick up the backside and should be dropped.

He is a neat and tidy player and could help relieve some of these hideous errors of late. Plus with Seabourne now on loan. What do people think? Jack Cork has been terrible every single time I've seen him play anywhere other than centre or right midfield, including at right back for England U-21s. Now Lambert, he might make a decent centre back, and at least he'd get a game every match then.
